I am sitting at a well known north end coffee shop by the door, and just witnessed about 6 or 7 people in a row throw their disposable coffee cups in the garbage on their way out. These being coffees that were consumed entirely on the premises, at an establishment that provides “for here” cups. What the eff people!!!!! This is 2013, is your head really so far up your ass that you must continue to so needlessly waste? It reminds me of people (I’m thinking of you, former roomy) who STILL throw paper and plastic into the garbage because they’re too lazy to put them into a separate bag (I know, it’s SO HARD). Hey, there goes another cup tosser! If I wasn’t so self-effacingly Canadian, I would confront that MF with his waste and make him eat it. But instead I’m doing the next best thing- hoping he picks up the Coast next week and reads this. And hey, coffee shops: stores now charge extra for bags, you should do the same with cups. Even a 5 cent charge would make most people think twice. Do it! Do it!! —JJ

“If I wasn’t so self-effacingly Canadian, I would confront that MF with his waste and make him eat it.”
Well, you’ve got the annoying little self-righteous prig attitude down pat, so no doubts about your canadian-ness. Word to the wise: oblivious, java-swillin’ planet-rapin’ MFs don’t take too kindly to finger-wagging lectures from painfully earnest eco-dweebs and tend to regard kicking hippie’s asses and raisin’ hell as more of a hobby than a vocation.
Old Tim’s knocks ten or fifteen cents off when you use your own thermos, doesn’t have to be their brand of thermos either. They do a good job of not telling people though, lol. I completely agree with the 5¢ idea, maybe even make it a deposit. The grubs and bums will love it even more than the environmentally conscious. Win-Win, and I fuckin’ love winning.
that bloody ‘someone’ is really falling down on the job. should be fired.
all the earnest folks who tell him what to do all day and night ‘someone should do something’ ‘someone oughta teach that guy a lesson’ ‘someone should take care of those kids’
sure hope that ‘someone’ reads the coast and cringes in shame…..
where else do you put used coffee cups. better in the garbage than out blowing around on the street. maybe you gift wrap your garbage but not everyone does op.
Get over yourself, OP! I like my disposable cup. Because at about four dollars a chai latte, I’m not leaving it behind if my new baby starts crying! Or, maybe you wouldn’t mind listening for as long as it takes for me to sip from the ceramic mug I can’t take with me?
Lucyfer; I’m sorry, but what kind of a lesson is that to pass on to the next generation. Convenience over environment, because obviously the Earth has unlimited resources and no pollution. Get a travel mug that has an open and close function. Hell, you can even buy travel mugs that are almost identical to a throw-away cup.
I get mine triple cupped… I have delicate hands.
At least they used the garbage can, shut the fuck up.
Sonic, does Tims still use a brand new cup to make/measure the coffee out? They had a thing where they wouldn’t use spoons in thermoses for health reasons.
SwampDonkey; I’ve never encountered that in the almost two years I’ve been using a thermos. But I drink two cream, no sugar, so I would certainly hope they’re not that stupid. Kind of pointless for them to knock a bit off the price then use a cup anyway.
..kumbaya my lord kumbaya..someones littering lord kumbaya ..
The laziness and stupidity of humanity knows no bounds OP.
But OP, if this gets published in the coast then everyone in the coffee shop will know that you were writing a bitch that whole time and not working on your novel. Think how disappointed they’ll be you self-effacing Canadian, you.
Yes Sonic, I’m a bad, bad mother because I choose disposable cups, because my coffee shop breaks are never spontaneous; apparently I’m supposed to remember to carry a mug with me everywhere at ALL times too, on top of everything else! Guess I should probably go out and buy one of those giant SUV strollers to hold some ceramic cups, a few plates and cutlery just in case….and then you can self righteously whine some more!
Lucyfer;
“I’m not leaving it behind if my new baby starts crying! Or, maybe you wouldn’t mind listening for as long as it takes for me to sip from the ceramic mug I can’t take with me?”
My post was an answer to your dilemma, bring a travel mug and if the new baby cries and you have to leave, then problem solved right? I did not say your a bad mother or even hint at that, you assumed that. I pointed out that what we do as parents teaches the next generation. You obviously took offense so I must have hit close to the truth. Self righteous whining would be the opposite of my approach, I gave you a realistic solution to your problem. Self righteous whining would be your entitled attitude because, oh my god, your NOT the only person with a new baby, this fact may blow your mind.
Sorry Sonic, I was grumpy when I wrote that and just blowing off some steam after 3 particularly bad sleeps in a row! If I liked caffeine drinks, I’d be brushing my teeth with them at this point!
Lucyfer Sounds like you need a break or do something nice for yourself,if you haven’t the opportunity to take a break. You have a newborn, you deserve it. 🙂
so cute that you get mad at a cup thrown in the trash!
….obviously not the biggest pollution problem.
I just threw my yogurt container in the garbage ….I’d have thrown it in the woodstove ….but I haven’t started the fire yet !
geeze more, you are going to choke to death one of these days if you are burning plastic. nasty stuff! why not save those containers to start seedlings in.
lucyfer, if you stop short of driving an axe thru someone’s head when they get snippy at you online, i would say you are doing fine.
Lucyfer; I was having a long day, lol. I really didn’t intend on insulting you, our throw away society bothers me alot though.
lowcoaster; Its not one cup, its hundreds, if not thousands thrown out per day, per coffee establishment. The carbon footprint to manufacture the cups, the use of natural resources to produce them, the fuel to transport them, then you have one coffee and your cup sits in a landfill for the rest of our lives. I hate the entitled mentality.
A happy note; The town I live in allows one garbage bag per house on pickup day, additional garbage bags must have a two dollar tag to be collected. Every province and city should follow suit.
Plastic = byproduct of petro industry …. means its made of oil aka coal aka wood ….so its burnable ! ~:p
I have seedling trays with covers to control the humidity …why would I want to fill my place up with garbage ?
Particularly garbage I can get a few BTU’s out of ? ? ?
Cause I don’t know what its like at yer house, but to keep us in T shirts & shorts this time of year means a mid 70 -80’s range .
And I do love it warm , which is why I’m hopin gto get a choice on which direction that celestial elevator goes … cause I’m goin’ st8 to hell & gettin’ myself a seat near a furnace .
Thanks Boru! I am so tired right now, If there was a big box in our unfinished basement, I would climb in with a blanket, close the lid, and sleep for a week!
