Sure, I may have been 5 minutes late for dim sum but I watched a group get seated right before me and handed menus, told what the kitchen had left, and I was then left to wait another 5 minutes while you took another order over the phone. When I asked if I could still get dim sum, you looked at me so matter of factly and said, “Sorry, dim sum all finished.” Now maybe I was experiencing an acid flashback, but the group ahead of me I’m sure were just handed dim sum menu’s and were told what the kitchen had left, at least I thought so… After I pointed this out, I was told “No.” So apparently I was indeed having an acid flashback because now the hostess just told me that I didn’t see what I just saw.
“Dim sum finish at 3:00, no later.” I am told to my disbelief as I can now overhear the other group placing their order.
“But they just got menus, they are ordering, and they just arrived too.” I state almost questioningly as I feel confused to how this is happening.
I shake my head and politely tell the hostess that I’ll never be returning again. I can’t believe how furious I feel knowing that if I had been Asian, they would’ve given me a table like the group just before me.
It’s a rare occurrence that a Caucasian experiences discrimination in Halifax, and now that I’ve barely sensed a hint of it, I have a whole new level of empathy to those that experience it on a daily basis on levels much deeper than getting fed on a Sunday afternoon. —No Dim Sum for You
This article appears in May 5-11, 2011.

..hey you shut up ..you bad round-eye ..no makey big trouble okays..
Asians are the most racist people I have worked with.
I don’t know, by the sounds of it it doesn’t really seem like racism. You and the people ahead of you were cutting it quite close to the deadline and the people in front of you were told what “the kitchen had LEFT”. To me that says they don’t have much other than the leftovers of that day and that they aren’t making anymore. So, the people in front of you probably got the last of what was left because they were there first.
wtf, is this for real or what?
If dim sum ends at 3:00 sharp and you walk in at 3:05, too bad so sad. The people in front of you (who arrived earlier than you) got what’s left and they aren’t going to call the kitchen to work overtime just so you can have your dim sum after you walked in past the cut off time. How you twisted that into being discriminated against because you’re white is beyond me.
You’re just pissed you didn’t get your dim sum.
“Sorry, dim sum all finished.” Wow, that one you spoke to has a good handle on the English language. I would have expected to hear “you, food, no, you, go.”
Poor you.
If it finishes at 3 , it finishes at 3. If they serve you at 3:05 one day, someone will say ‘well I saw you serve someone at 3:05 yesterday, so why can’t you serve me at 3:08 today? and then so on and on…btw you should be going to the place in Cole Harbour for Sunday buffet anyway.
This is ridiculous, self-centred, and obnoxious. If you really had your heart set on Dim Sum, you should have shown up earlier. Specials have to end at a certain time, it sounds like the restaurant was busy, they had to cut it off somewhere. You probably think that you really stung them by saying that you’ll not come back, but no one wants to serve people like you. Next time, stay home, you airhead. Also, head’s up, you’re a racist.
Fixed
Sure, They may have been 5 minutes late for dim sum but I seated a group, handed them menus, and warned them that the kitchen only had a little left. I an order over the phone and then seated another customer. They asked if they could still get dim sum, and I said “I’m sorry, the dim sum service is finished.” Now they looked at me like they were on acid and said “Lard Thunderin’ Boy! I needs my “Dime Suuum’ EH!”
I told them I would be happy to get them something else but they bellowed “Get me my Dime Summ, or I’ll kick your scrawny yella ASS!!”
“But we don’t have any more” I state almost questioningly as I feel confused to how this is happening.
They slam their hands on the table making your well-stretched Tap-Out shake in fury. They head out and screaming profanities about how they know true discrimination on par with the Freedom Riders and Ghandi.
As I watched their Conferate Flag be-sticker pick-up roar away, I turned to my blond haired, blue-eyed reflection and said “What a dick
Dim sum after 3:00? You some dim!
Thank you for that descriptive play by play Mr Luthor! I love that I can always count on your wonderful comments!
lol I dunno what Dim Sum is but if it was that important that you have it on a Sunday then get there early. The subway in Burnside by Burger King has a buy one get one for a dollar on Sundays! They say till 7PM, but they’re lenient.
What a stupid bitch.
Dim sum is a Cantonese term for a type of Chinese dish that involves small individual portions of food, usually served in a small steamer basket or on a small plate.
Thanks Donk
sarcasm whale?
Plan your Dim Sum better next time, that’s what your fortune cookie would have said had you been on time for Dim Sum.
It’s a rare occurrence that a Caucasian experiences discrimination in Halifax – my dear unenlightened poster, surely you must know that EVERY other race can play the race card EXCEPT CAUCASIANS, we’re ALWAYS the bad guy and usually have to soothe their poor discriminated souls with the healing balm of CONSCIENCE/GUILT MONEY.
I can see your next post will be – I know I was a bit late, but only 5 minutes, and they served me dim-sum and it was fucking crap as it had been prepared hours ago.
I always read Basil Bush not brush, lol
And the people who talk to sebasgin (or just humour) him must be used to the low-hormone voice accompanied by a powerful lithp.
It was pretty clear to me that what happened was clearly discrimination.
The group ahead of me came in moments before I, got seated, were given menus, and allowed to order while I get denied service.
I am certain that had I been asian, like the group ahead of me, I would’ve been served. Now all of you haters that say “It was after 3:00 – what could you possibly expect????” I expect the same treatment that the group in front of me got…They arrived just moments before me. The kitchen was out of two items on a dim sem menu – two.
Its simple…The hostess was an older asian lady that didn’t care, won’t care, and doesn’t care that seating the group ahead of me and pretending like it didn’t happen was discriminatory.
Mock all you’d like, but I’m sure what I felt was wrong and it was clearly discrimination.
There is reasonable doubt. You wouldn’t win in a court of law.
Oh ps I’m not saying it wasn’t discrimination, it’s just really difficult to sympathize with you when it seems like you knew they closed at 3 and expected to be served just because the people in front of you got served. What is 8 other people walked in at the same time as you, should they have been served also?
It’s like trying to get on a plane after it’s taken off. Not gonna work …
I dunno why this is so funny to me
Ok….
#1- You have NO proof that they were served simply because they were Asian
#2- the table that got there BEFORE you got what the kitchen had left of the dim sum
#3- you arrived late. If it ends at 3:00 it ends at 3:00. They are not obligated to serve you the special if the special ends at 3:00
The table that got seated ahead of you likely arrived at 3:00 or closer to 3:00, so were then given the opportunity to order whatever the kitchen still had available. Or perhaps the kitchen told the servers how much was left so if anyone wanted they had X amount to feed X amount of people. You may have been Y. They had enough to feed X but not Y.
And you’re grasping at straws. You don’t KNOW that you were denied service because you’re not Asian. You’re guessing and assuming.
Next time plan ahead. Find out of the dim sum goes all day, if not plan to arrive well in advance so you get your table and your food.
Maybe they had reservations. Maybe they were long lost relatives and the kitchen was expecting them.
Maybe you’re just an asshole and you need to get there on time.
Or maybe they passed around the opium pipe, played mah-jong and laughed themselves pissless at the fact that not only were you hungry, their 5 year old can do calculus problems that would make your head explode and will one day be your boss^^^^
If you’re going to play the “Yellow Peril” card; play for high stakes. >; )
“It was pretty CLEAR to me that what happened was CLEARLY discrimination… Mock all you’d like, but I’m sure what I felt was wrong and it was CLEARLY discrimination.”
Clearly, this is a clear example of someone clearly unintentionally demonstrating their own doubts about their position by clearly overcompensating for it with clear overemphasis regarding their own certainty.
What do you mean you were denied service? You can’t be denied a service if the service is no longer available. That’s like calling a business after business hours and complaining that they ignored your phone call after no one picks up… and tacking on racism as an afterthought lol.
Your CLEAR conviction that this was CLEARLY racism is nothing more than assumption and speculation.
Also, your little bit about understanding what it’s like to be a visible minority because you didn’t get dim sum after three, is extremely irritating. Comparing this to actual racism is laughable.
All this talk about Asians is making me awl bothered ;D. Or should I say ^_^
Speaking of being hot and bothered and Asian, my Chinese friend was telling me the main difference he noticed between Asian porn and American porn is that American girls are all like, “OH YEAH” and Asian girls are all like, “OMG STOP”. Teehee. Made me giggle.
Yeah that’s actually more or less true (not that I know from experience or anything :P).
I find Asian guys during sex to be very quiet and stotic.
Not much comes out of them.
Words, perverts!
You wrote that on purpose, Mr ML!
You are a naughty naughty man.
… and I like it! 😀
heehee

Was the group that arrived before OB Asian? This wasn’t discrimination; it was showing up after the deadline. Get over it. OB was late, felt entitled, didn’t get what they wanted and is now crying discrimination.
Getting there 5 minutes before it ended and expecting anything to be left is kind of dumb. Maybe they only had enough for one party?
Dim sum? No. More like dim WIT.
Confucius say:
Man who miss Dim Sum
Is some fuckface.
This is on par with someone entering a store on the last day of a sale expecting to pick up the biggest loss-leader special and getting pissed off because they sold out and “OMG! NO RAINCHECKS?! WHAT KIND OF HOLE IS THIS?!” I swear, the way some people throw money around, you’d think that they were looking to buy slaves from among the sales clerks, _especially_ with how poorly some customers treat sales staff.
Oh my… what will you be asking for your reparations? After you get a lesson in time management your first assumption is the you were discriminated against because of you are white. LOL. What a fucking dolt!!!!!
This Bitch is hilarious!
I am a white person who works at an asian restaurant and I can tell you this was not racial discrimination. There are times when you have to make a cut-off. You, unfortunately, were the cutoff at dim sum. In my experience, we’ll get customers walking in 2 minutes before closing time, we’ll seat them and while they are looking over the menus, others will walk in and we’ll send them away because we’ve already allowed some people to push the limits and we need to cut it off at some point.
It sucks, but like everyone else has commented, come earlier next time!
I can understand where your anger is coming from, OP. But when you step back and think about it, if you jump to the conclusion that she didn’t serve you because you are white, than you’re kinda playing the race card.
so this is what all the dim sum jokes were stemming from….
bat-shit crazy over chinese food…. really?
Do you know how long it takes to get the water boiling?
