This really PISSES ME OFF! I went into a corner store and purchased a few items and when I went to pay for them and use my debit card the amount on the machine was different than the total on the cash register. When I questioned the clerk, I was told it’s a debit fee. There is no sign stating this so-called fee and they just add it on to your total. I pay my bank for debit transactions…are the stores allowed to slip this charge on without notifying you? Is this just another way of scamming money out of customers? Regardless I’m mad as hell over this and looking for answers. —Ripped Off Customer

Just kidding Iqbal. Pack of Export “A”s and a 649, please.

  2. You pay the bank for YOUR debts, but the store still has to pay fees for THEIR use of the interac system.

Each transaction costs the merchant money — you’re not the only one paying to use this service.

Often times, smaller merchants will charge for it because their volume of sales just doesn’t allow for them to constantly absorb that cost. And sometimes they’re just cheap.

Don’t like it? Well, visit a bank machine run by your bank, take the cash out and pay in cash.

Sometimes that’s the price you pay for convenience.

  3. yes this is legal, and this is why you should use a credit card as a debit card and immediately pay it off. It is illegal in canada to pass on the credit card usage fee to the customer, it is completely legal to do it with debit.

  4. Here’s a novel idea – use cash.

I’ve seen more 20-somethings pay those wonky charges for a purchase less than $5.00 than I’ve seen drunks fornicating perriwinkles in my ditch – do the math, kids, it might easier to use but those charges add up.

Just think – you might be able to afford a triple triple tub of Thin Horny’s finest coffee sludge/paint thinner at the end of the month.

  5. http://www.interac.ca/consumers/faqs.php#f…

“Interac Association maintains strict rules to ensure that surcharges are properly disclosed on the ABM or terminal screen. You’re always presented with a screen indicating the surcharge fee amount. The transaction will only proceed if you accept the disclosed surcharge amount.”

So if the store is just adding it on, you have a valid bitch.

  6. those fucking non bank atm’s are the worst. they charge you a fee on top of your bank fee, on top of your monthly service fees. rip offs or what?
