A PROBLEM IN DENOTATION
What are the criteria for the correct applications of the terms “dick” and “asshole?” In their metaphorical usages as given here – we’re not talking about actual body parts but rather colloquialisms denoting personal characteristics – the question is vexed. Such being the case it is futile to expect any tight denotative fit between such metaphorical usage and personal characteristics. In other words, a “dick” may still be a “dick” and not interested in fucking. In the same way an “asshole” may still be an “asshole” yet not be full of shit. In other words, there is conceptual slippage when metaphorical usage as opposed to denotation is being employed. Different criteria apply which point to the restricted denotative application of metaphorical terms. This, of course, is the problem in denotation.
