There are a number of people driving in downtown Halifax who seem to have a problem with cyclists using crosswalks. There have been many occasions where I have had drivers get dangerously close to hitting me on my bike while shouting obscenities and yammering on all pissed off and shit. Apparently, me being on a bike in the crosswalk is a huge issue for these folks. I just don’t quite get why it’s so upsetting really. What does it matter if there is 1 person or 20 people, a group of wheelchairs, blind people, very slow elderly people, children, pets, etc. Really assholes? What is the damn difference if there is a bike in the crosswalk? It’s still a goddamned crosswalk and when there is a walk light you damn well shouldn’t be driving through a crosswalk anyway. You are supposed to “walk” your bike across the crosswalk is the issue. It’s not called a “bikewalk”.
Do you ride across or do you take a moment to dismount and walk your bicycle across? If you are walking your bicycle across a crosswalk there is nothing for anyone else to complain about. A conscientious cyclist, in my experience, is the best cyclist.
Uh, you’re not supposed to drive your bike across the crosswalk, you tool. That’s what the honks are for. You couldn’t figure out why you always got honked at by different people in crosswalks? Geez. And you wonder why people in cars hate people on bikes. They think the rules of the road only apply to them when it’s convenient for them.

The problem is that walkers ‘step’ out onto a crosswalk and cyclists are capable of entering a crosswalk at 30km/h, I’ve seen stupid assholes on bikes nearly killed due to this difference.
You people are driving a VEHICLE…do not use the cross walk unless you dismount; if you insist on driving through an intersection then do so as every other vehicle on the road does (and obey traffic laws). In particular, the 4 way stop at Jubilee and Vernon…you don’t veer into the crosswalk and keep on peddling; you stop at the damn wide white line like everyone else, wait your turn yielding to those who were at the intersection first…it’s a 4 way stop!
Again, licensing (driver’s test req’d), registration and insurance NEED to be required for cyclists.
Man, whenever I drive my minivan in Point Pleasant Park I get the STUPIDEST looks from people on the paths.
And the cycle continues. I almost hit a Ped today because he didn’t know what the red light he had meant whereas I had the green.
