  1. I wonder if this is the same melanoma salon that uses the same filthy rag all day long to wipe down the sweaty beds? Integrity is as integrity does.

I wonder how many tanners who’ve developed skin cancer would choose naturally white skin over death if they had a do-over? Likely all of them. Something to think about other than light changing frequency lies. Is the action really worth the risk?

  2. OB, I urge you to stop going to tanning salons. It doesn’t make you any more attractive to anyone, I don’t care what you say. If you’re good looking without a tan you’ll be good looking with one and if you’re ugly without a tan you’ll be ugly with one. Embrace your paleness. I like to tan too, I won’t lie, but those tanning beds are one of the worst things you can do to yourself. Skin cancer is not a joke.

I swear every single person I’ve known that went got burnt. And that’s NOT SEXY. Not to mention you burn your skin you can’t go outside, your essentially trading in artificial sunlight for real.

Your skin is just fine the shade that it is. Save that tanning money for a tropical vacation and go get a real tan.

  3. The morons who use tanning beds will the same arseholes who’ll blow $200 on an anti-aging lotion. There’s no such thing as a safe tan unless you spray it on.

  4. Uhh pretty much everyone said what I wanted to say already. Nobody cares if your tan. Nobody is going to be like “You know, I’d hang out with more if you had a tan” or “You would have gotten this job is you had a tan”. There is not one benefit to tanning other than it for some reason makes you, OP, feel better about yourself. Do you know what you’re going to look like when you’re 30, 40, if you even make it that far? You’re going to look like a 75-year-old leather purse. But whateva, do what you want, I’ll enjoy my pale, smooth skin fo’ lyfe :D. I reallly love the smell of sunscreen for some reason… I guess because of all the things that go with it <3

  5. Right fucking on, Melectric – many of my peers look like cheap faux leather purses from Walmart.

  6. I think everyone is missing the point of this post. It’s not a debate over tanning vs. no tanning, or whether tanning is good for you or what you’ll look like in 30 years…no, REREAD the post!! It’s about the fact that a Halifax business has supposedly lied to a customer regarding the servicability of a piece of it’s equipment. By saying a light bulb has just been replaced in a tanning bed when it hasn’t, is, IMO, false advertising and the OP has every right to be pissed. Here she is forking over her hard earned cash to this shiester, for a service of which she expects a certain outcome. This is not happening. Shameful! Shame on this salon for….naaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh, I’m only playin’, Y’all!! (thought I was serious, didn’t ya?) Tanning be fucking stupid! Get over yourself OP and wisen the hell up. You’re probably one of these people that hits the gym like 6 days a week, only eats salads when they go out to a restaurant and can extole ad nauseam the benefits of a high fibre diet but then go and deep fry your ass in cocoa butter at the nearest Fake n’ Bake salon. It ranks right up there with ordering the fries with a Diet Coke….pointless! Stupid! You’re a walking, malignant melanoma tumor waiting to happen, all for the sake of allegedly “looking good”.

  7. I would venture that since these places lie about tanning beds being safe, they’re not going to be worried about lying about something else.

  8. From what I’ve seen in pictures, mel’s skin is quite beautiful. 😉

  9. holy shit people… they are useful.
I know I should have got a base tan before going south…
second day I was quite ‘lobsterized’ …
and payed for it through the whole trip, avoiding the sun during peak times.

they do have a purpose… though if you want to be a tangerine tinted buffoon… well it’s not like there isn’t selection. just hit up fairview.
you can stumble around drink and avoid pissing on a tanning salon there.
    they’re everywhere.
and if you haven’t been to fairview lately, you’ll know why I put it like that when you get there.

  10. ok, to summarize, since I think I fucked it up before…
    they’re everywhere.
nail salons with tanning beds… hair dressers with tanning beds…
hell, I bet the pawn shop sells fucking tanning beds….

and now, if you’ll excuse me, it’s time to get back to fairview, get piss drunk, and blend in

  11. I think I remember hearing somewhere that the idea of a “base tan” is basically bullshit, but I could be wrong.

  12. Base tans are not baseless … hehehe -.-

“Excessive solar radiation causes direct and indirect DNA damage to the skin and the body naturally combats and seeks to repair the damage and protect the skin by creating and releasing further melanin into the skin’s cells. With the production of the melanin, the skin color darkens …” In the link PG provided it says that base tans are about SPF 4. If you go to the sotre “tanning oils” are SPF 5-10. The base tan doesn’t prevent skin cancer but it does allow one to stay out for a tad longer especially for the first few days in the hot sun down south. Zzz ain’t telling lies.

  13. I have an appointment with a dermatologist this coming Tuesday about a mole on my temple that’s changed colour, shape, etc. My dad had melanoma & died of his cancer. I’m calmly shitting bricks. Never did the tanning bed garbage, but had plenty of that rare NS summer sun whenever I could get it.

  14. OP, short the bulb out with a wire…..then you can sure the lights will be new next time you go in.

  15. Thanks Brendon ;D. My name means dark pigment… go figya! But yeah, I have heard from dermatologists that this whole base tan thing is BS. Getting a tan is bad for you PERIOD. The best thing for your skin is sunscreen and reapply and reapply and reapply. I have very pale skin and burn easily but when I went down south, I made a point to keep reapplying my sunscreen every couple hours and whenever I got out of the water and dry and I did not get a single burn. Except on my scalp :(, so I wore a hat. I barely even got a tan! My ex went to get a “base tan” before we went and he got burned to shit just from the base tan, so I don’t see how that works.

  16. “Base tans” don’t actually work to protect your skin in any way because tanning beds and real sunlight produce two different types of rays. They both damage (aka: “tan”) the skin in different ways and in no way protect the skin from the other type. Sunscreen works though.

  17. I really don’t understand the tan thing. So you’re pale-skinned, a biological adaptation for people in northern climes to absorb more of the sun’s rays thus vitamin D.
Subjecting yourself to extended exposure to UV rays even with sun block is risky, particularly if light-skinned.
I guess a tanned complexion is considered to look healthier, I don’t think that myself but why would so many people go through this.
