What the HELL!!! Did I seriously hear you consider the option of keeping the skating oval? A lot of people are interested in keeping it on the commons for public use, but you aren’t interested in charging the users of the oval a fee for using it? But you do want to use 1 MILLION dollars to fund the oval of what money, mayor? Are YOU paying for it? If I were to guess, it would coming out of OUR pockets! Again, WHAT THE HELL!!! I can think of several better things to spend the money on! Maybe improving the welfare system to help people get out of their money-less hole, help them go on a four year program (Like they do in the states) so that Welfare is a last resort and helps people get on their feet, instead of Welfare being a livelihood? How about cutting down the amount of taxes we have on gas? Why is the tax on gas well over 50%? Why don’t you take that money you’re thinking about throwing away on the skating oval and put it towards gas taxes? Or maybe put it towards covering more of the costs of medicines that medical insurance doesn’t cover, for the people who are really sick? You’re fucking cutting all of the funds for schooling, why not give them their funding back? Or fucking lower the costs of University/College so people don’t have to die without even coming close to paying off their loans from secondary schooling? Seriously, what the fuck! IIRC: HRM doesn’t tax gas.
And as someone who’s all done university…I really have no desire to fund the tuitions of other university students, who are dumbasses, by and large, taking useless degrees and expecting to get jobs afterwards. But again, HRM doesn’t have any control over university funding.

You seriously need to reexamine who funds what because you are talking about municipality, provincial and federal issues.. The mayor only has a say in municipality issues..

I’m ok with the oval sticking around, and there is a lot of support, but as per usual it’s the damn “conservitive” type whiner voices that are being heard over the media.
The mayor doesn’t have anything to do with the welfare system either.
Though this mayor isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer. The municipality charges for skating at indoor rinks, so why not at the oval since there is a cost to maintain it.
OP is a a nut job. I don’t think a single thing they propose to fun is actually funded by the municipality. Read a newspaper, douche.
1 mill seems like a lot of money, but it’s really not insane. And even if they charge $1 to everyone who uses it, they’re probably make half of that back. Then they can rent it to speed skating clubs, etc. Ya, it’d still be a deficit, but nothing drastic, or more than they spend on employee recognition and retirement parties every year.
What do you think a mayor is good for? He may not directly control the welfare system, but he has power to try to make a difference. More of a power than regular citizens do. If he wants to go any higher up than a mayor, which I am sure he does, trying to make a difference for the people of Halifax AND other Canadians would be a good idea to try, in my opinion.
I think it’s stupid they don’t want to charge the people to use it to fund it, but everyone who doesn’t use it still pays for it. In my opinion it is a waste.
Just so you know, HRM effects us, so does laws the rest of Canada has.
I mean, whether our tax dollars go towards funding the up keep of the oval or plowing the snow off our roads, I personally think there is good and bad ways to spend the money. Look at those people who used our tax dollars to buy their families laptops and TV’s…

I agree with OP’s bottom line. I think the money could go towards better things than an outside skating rink.
Depends really, i’m sure more important things could be bought with the money but as other people have pointed out the revenue could be generated by the public. The Feel good factor that would be created by keeping the oval is worth it to me, people exercising, giving out of towners more to do in the city as well as showing that halifax is a progressive city who listens to her citizens.
