Police lights and sirens are to be used for emergencies, not to facilitate left turns or run red lights for convenience. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve seen police officers abuse this privelage. I wonder if this sort of behaviour is why the term ‘pig’ has become synonamous with police officer. How can we have any faith in the integrity of our police force when (some) police officers so flagrantly abuse even harmless privelages?
To those officers who are above this behaviour: sorry if this complaint sounds like a generalization. You’re responsibility is appreciated.

It’s hard to know why they’re in a hurry. Maybe you should just presume they have important business to attend to.
A – I am certain you have no way of knowing if they are responding to a call or not. Not all service calls require lights and siren but most certainly do require an acceptable response time ( response times are recorded and measured by the way )
B – Even IF they are just getting through the intersection and not responding to a call, who fucking cares. This isn’t exactly a Rodney King level abuse of power we are talking about. Although yes technically they shouldn’t do this, I find it hard to imagine someone getting their nickers in a bunch over it. This city sucks for protected left hand turn lanes so ya gotta do what ya gotta do. If my car had lights and siren I am sure I’d do the same thing.

a cop car once pulled a U-TURN and cut me off in an intersection in bayer’s lake, lights a’ flashing, only to drive normally down a deserted stretch of road like nothing happened………………………………….wtf i ask u?
Cops are still bound by the same laws of the road that citizens are. There was a HRPD officer charged a couple years ago who was also found guilty.
Take down the plate and car number and call it into the station. If you hit their car, they’d be on the hook!
I once was fortunate (?) enough to witness a cop car putting on his lights/sirens to cross an intersection w/a red light… I was walking to work when I saw the cop car with the green light t-bone the cop car who used his lights to cross the intersection…
I called to offer my witness statement, but was not contacted after… apparently they didn’t want my information… 🙂
I think Lovinglife’s first explanation covers a lot of the occasions that we see this happen. Like ambulances, they do not need to go lights and siren for the whole time they are responding to a call…it all depends on the emergency level. If they did use their sirens all the time I’m sure we’d hear a lot more bitches on here about how noisy and annoying and irresponsible they are being.
I have about 23 ( some are on the same person x3) Form 5s at the NS Police Commission…..they range form trying to bribe a member of a NPO I belong to…to trying to hit a known to police woman in a crosswalk to out and out brutality that lead to medical issues…. planting witnesses and fabricating statements to avoid pressing charges….all in the day of the HRM offisewer…..

Unless you’re somehow in said car, or happen to be listening in on a scanner, you really have no way of knowing if the call is legit, so best assume it is. Would I put it past some officers to do this? No, but it’s a drop in the bucket in the overall picture.
Let’s see all HPD vehicles have GPS and are monitored more closely than even 5 years ago. You see something you think is strange call dispatch and lay a complaint.
Chances are they are going to a call or a call could have been cancelled. Depending on the call they could turn off the lights and siren before getting to their destination because *gasp* they don’t want to give warning to a bad guy. Often at night they’ll run their siren only at intersections so trying not to disturbed the sleeping public. Believe you me, being in a police car with that fucking siren going is no picnic, especially as you’re trying to listen to information over the radio.
Like I said, if you’re concerned, call.

The disrespect for the Police in this city is incomprehensible. All allegations of racism aside, these are people for the most part that put their balls (or or vag in some cases) on the line day in and day out. They deal with shit we wouldn’t dare touch with a ten foot pole. Don’t get cheesed off because you got hauled over 5 years ago and got a speeding ticket and now all cops are “pigs” and are out to hassle you/power trip on you.

The police are in the public eye and can’t sneeze without someone seeing and/or complaining. Policing is one of the very few jobs where one’s actions or inactions is scrutinized by the public and placed under a microscope. How many of you have jobs like that. Very few.

Have you ever talked to a HPD officer? Have you ever had any dealings with them when you weren’t breaking a law? Believe it or not, they are good people.
As mentioned, they deal with shit you can’t even imagine. 12 hour shifts of drugs, assaults, sexual assaults, car accidents, stabbings, shootings, vomit in their cars and the Spryfield gangsters. On top of that, if there is a black person within 17 square miles, it’s racist and there is a march (if it’s nice out).
I’ve traveled all over the world, every continent, over 100 countries, I would trust an HPD officer before any other police force I’ve seen.

I’m sure there are plenty of lawyers that would take that case pro bono, given if your allegations are serious.
While I accept that this city is very violent for it’s size, I will not accept that it is not incited by the majority of those who are charged to protect it.

I called that 911 in and 911 said I was the only one who did. I witnessed the entire hate crime against this peaceful family yet no police took my statement and only one thug out of a possible 6 that I named got charged-9 mos house arrest and was out the next night slinging crack …… although I called that in many times too the police did nothing…that thug fam was protected by police despite all the crimes they did to innocent people, crimes too depraved for me to post….

Hmm… well what if a police officer was coming up to a call which needed subtlety or stealth, the element of surprise could prevent injuries when a situation is already known to be tense. They may just be in a hurry and using those sirens sparingly, while cringing because they know you are going to assume they are being pigs… which is why the power to keep secrets corrupts, and entrenches us on either side of the thin blue line…
however you were probably right (sigh, guess I’m part of the problem then… good. I swore I would be when I realized they were too.) I don’t believe that but I try to keep my mind open. There are two reasons I don’t want a police officer to hate me; me, and them. It’s bad for both of us. I don’t just feel that way about cops, it’s everyone, but we rarely are compelled to discuss anyone else.
