Oh, come on people, anyone who’s worked in the sales or service insustries knows damn well how some people can be. Those that love to lord it over people they think are in a ‘lower’ station in life- when much of the time, these people have alot more education and intelligence than they do. I’m sure that your customers would treat you with a little more respect if you returned the favour. It goes both ways, you know, and your attitude seems pretty sour.

Yeah Ex-patriot, some people work at coffee houses, Gap and the like while they are LOOKING for ‘real’ jobs. In case you haven’t noticed, lil’old Nova Scotia doesn’t have the greatest of opportunties- this is why so many people leave to find real jobs, such as the one I found as soon as I got out of there.
And Jennier, what makes you think the OP has a sour attitude merey for complaining of the customers who are condescending? I worked jobs like this while in university, and trust me; for some people it doesn’t make one iota of difference how respectful an employee treats them. Like you say- it goes both ways. I was always respectful, I always served with a smile on my face, yet to still experience so many customers in a single day who were rude merely because I was serving them, made me seethe.
When some snobby U-grad behind the counter thinks they are better than me,i like go shit in the toilet and not flush…just to remind them of their station in life.it‘s one of the privileges of being at a higher station in life.people need to learn their place.

Spit in my coffee and I’ll punch you square in the mouth. No amount of disrespect from a customer deserves that kind of shit. I was a cook/chef for almost ten years. You can short their order, give them a medium coffee in a large cup, give them a fucked up cup so it dribbles, etc. But if you spit in someone’s coffee or food, you should be fined and tossed in jail for a few days. That shit is disgusting and only the lowest of the low resort to that type of immature behavior.

I disagree that graduating with honours “means nothing” … and I think it is generally people who don’t have post secondary training who think education is worthless – it’s not. That being said I don’t think that university educated people are “better” than their non-educated counterparts, I just think everyone needs to treat eachother with respect regardless of the situation. I work in a low level job because I am currently going to school, and I find that the rudest people are often the ones who also have menial or no jobs, and little education. Maybe its a bit of a small man syndrome? Chin up OP, you will be out of the coffee house soon enough!

Obviously the OP wouldn’t actually spit in a customer’s coffee, he/she probably just said that to vent, yet most of you on here just look at that one little thing and completely ignore the main message. I empathize with the OP: sometimes customers can be way out of line and really, there is nothing you can do about it. At least the OP will be respectful to service people in the future when he/she gets his/her real job.
I know it sucks to have your degree and still have to put up with rude people, but nowadays, you need more than just a degree to get a job. OP, maybe try to network with some of your regulars? Or better yet, pick up a trade.
