just because I work at a coffee shop and serve coffee for a living does NOT mean I am a dumb nitwit. I just graduated with honours from university and am probably more intelligent and worldly than you will ever be. treat me like crap again and I will spit in your coffee
—it’s the economy, stupid
This article appears in Aug 6-12, 2009.

This is why baristas are snobby!
Those guys think they’re so hot, just because they have costumes on…
Make that university proud!
Oh, look at me, I graduated from university with honours! I have a degree! I am so smart! I am better than you!
Fuck off! Just because you graduated from university does not make you better than anyone else. You still have some growing up to do. So shut the fuck up and make me my fucking coffee before I stick my foot up your snooty fucking ass!
And I’ll smile and tip you with my “special sauce” coins.
Oh, come on people, anyone who’s worked in the sales or service insustries knows damn well how some people can be. Those that love to lord it over people they think are in a ‘lower’ station in life- when much of the time, these people have alot more education and intelligence than they do. This is a legitimate bitch.
I’m sure that your customers would treat you with a little more respect if you returned the favour. It goes both ways, you know, and your attitude seems pretty sour.
Ummm….graduated with honours and working in a coffee shop? Yeah, you’re a real success story. Get a real job!
Yeah Ex-patriot, some people work at coffee houses, Gap and the like while they are LOOKING for ‘real’ jobs. In case you haven’t noticed, lil’old Nova Scotia doesn’t have the greatest of opportunties- this is why so many people leave to find real jobs, such as the one I found as soon as I got out of there.
And Jennier, what makes you think the OP has a sour attitude merey for complaining of the customers who are condescending? I worked jobs like this while in university, and trust me; for some people it doesn’t make one iota of difference how respectful an employee treats them. Like you say- it goes both ways. I was always respectful, I always served with a smile on my face, yet to still experience so many customers in a single day who were rude merely because I was serving them, made me seethe.
When some snobby U-grad behind the counter thinks they are better than me,i like go shit in the toilet and not flush…just to remind them of their station in life.it‘s one of the privileges of being at a higher station in life.people need to learn their place.
Oh, I don’t know, something about the “I am probably more intelligent than you” statement that just doesn’t scream “I respect you, my dear customers”.
Chances are, if the OP is thinking it, the customers are sensing it.
University degree or not, if you give me polite service and get my order right, then you get my respect.
Space bar, Miles, space bar!!! 😉
What are ‘coffee shop costumers’? Do they put cute little outfits on the coffee? Dress up the biscotti? Fix the hemlines on your barista aprons? Way to put those university smarts to work, OP. I don’t care how intelligent you think you are, you sound pretty dumb right now.
Oh, and Miles? Are you channeling LIFE SUCKS this morning? Knock it off, dude, you’re freaking me out 😛
Spit in my coffee and I’ll punch you square in the mouth. No amount of disrespect from a customer deserves that kind of shit. I was a cook/chef for almost ten years. You can short their order, give them a medium coffee in a large cup, give them a fucked up cup so it dribbles, etc. But if you spit in someone’s coffee or food, you should be fined and tossed in jail for a few days. That shit is disgusting and only the lowest of the low resort to that type of immature behavior.
just because you graduated with honors means nothing, there is a diffrence between common sense smart and school smart
I like to put a Starbucks costume on my Timmy’s coffee. It makes him feel more snobby!
Just think of where you would be today, without that University degree. Probably serving coffee ,& no student loan to repay !
I disagree that graduating with honours “means nothing” … and I think it is generally people who don’t have post secondary training who think education is worthless – it’s not. That being said I don’t think that university educated people are “better” than their non-educated counterparts, I just think everyone needs to treat eachother with respect regardless of the situation. I work in a low level job because I am currently going to school, and I find that the rudest people are often the ones who also have menial or no jobs, and little education. Maybe its a bit of a small man syndrome? Chin up OP, you will be out of the coffee house soon enough!
Then you can make me a Magna cum Latte – I stole that from one of the cartoons, which is where putz-face got his degree – NSCAD perhaps?
Because spitting in Coffee definitely makes you the smart one..
Hi OB, you probably did not expect such a nasty response from most posters. It is the way you phrased your bitch dear, next time be a bit more humble.
I know someone that works in a coffee shop so you have my empathy, jerks she has to put with daily and continue to serve with a smile due to company policy.
Since you are a University Grad you will likely get a better job eventually and the last laugh so cheer up.
What a self-important little cunt you are. You claim to be so fucking intelligent yet you’d spit in someone’s coffee because you think they’re condescending to your precious self. Get over your inflated ego and deal with life as it is rather than pontificate how ‘worldly’ you are. I’m one hell of a lot more worldly than you, sweetcakes (and just as educated), and I can guarantee your attitude will get you fucking nowhere.
ahhh, thank you, shoe_chick – the space bar, of course – that is why i keep seeing what appear to be web URIs embedded in some people’s comments.
are you listening LIFE SUCKS? cuz not only is your spelling & grammar atrocious, but you can’t even be bothered to put spaces b/w your sentences. so maybe the rest of us shouldn’t waste our time trying to decipher your hen scratch either. hey, i’m just sayin… and no offense intended, so please don’t get mad and come after me with your .44 magnum, m’kay?
btw, considering the plethora of online dictionaries and grammar tools that are available, there’s no reasonable excuse to viciously cannibalize the english language, as i’ve seen so often on here. seriously, some of you bitchers need to take remedial english classes or something. it’s not pretty.
Apparently a university degree can’t take the ghetto out of a person. Spit in your coffee? Bitch please. That’s why you’re writting a bitch about it right? Grow some balls and next time someones an asshole to you at work, say something to them about instead of making empty threats on a website.
I’ve worked in retail and people can be dicks but its something that you expect and learn to deal with. You shouldn’t have to but you do. People are and always will be assholes.
I don’t have a degree from university. It was just not for me. I respect those who do. However, I do not respect those who think they are better than me because they have one.
University never made a dumb person smart! It just proves you managed to show up some place for 4 years in a row.
You know those drunk assholes who scream at 3 am on Friday and Saturday night – Those are future university grads!
clearly this person is just frustrated with costumers that think they’re better than anyone in a low-level job. I’m a university grad and work a crap job too (because ‘real jobs’ aren’t exactly up for grabs these days) and treat all my costumers with respect and a smile, but some of them still treat me like I’m trash. And sometimes make me want to a wear tshirt proclaiming the very same thing this poster said. It all comes down to the fact that we all just need to treat each other better, crap job or good job, uni grad or not.
Quit drinkin’ the kool aid, sweetie.
Intelligent and worldy people spit in other people’s coffee all the time. Yup. Sure. You should go back and beef up on Ethics 101 and then enroll yourself in an anger management course. Holy shit cakes!
That’s pretty harsh, TTFN. although…when my ex came home telling me he stirred his superior officer’s drink with his penis after he was snubbed, I think my comment of “you’re a disgusting pig” would have impacted him more if I added “you self-important little cunt”.
…and?
If someone spit in my hot drink I’d throw it in their face. Burns doesn’t it? Oh, and taste that booger flavour!
and what?
I’d pay $400 to watch you do that NGF 🙂 What a hoot.
Did anyone notice that this educated bozo can’t even spell ‘CUSTOMER’?
suzannaLechevalier said, “I’m a university grad and work a crap job… and treat all my costumers [sic] with respect and a smile, but some of them still treat me like I’m trash.”
oh my, sweetie, maybe if you didn’t refer to your CUSTomers as COSTumers, they might be a little nicer to you. sheesh, and you’re a university grad, you say?!
honestly, wtf are they teaching kids in school these days??
certainly not the ENGLISH language!
Apparently spell check has taken the academic portion out of university. Anyone can graduate with a 2.5 GPA now, making that degree worth even less now.
Worse yet, because of texting, successive generations will have thumbs that look like bendable bolongas.
what’s a ‘bolonga’, TTFN?
or did you mean to say, ‘bologna’?
Damn! I was so hoping bolonga was a word… 😛
Anyway, OP, grow up. If you think changing jobs will change the type of people you deal with (degree or not), I have your wake-up call here. Twits come in all shapes and sizes; many of them have university degrees. Get used to it, ‘cuz it ain’t gettin’ better any time soon. Oh, and I suggest keeping the spittle behind your teeth. You just might lose them if you pull a stunt like that.
Geeze, what do you expect after I’ve been calling it ‘Newfie Tube Steak’ for the last three decades?
Obviously the OP wouldn’t actually spit in a customer’s coffee, he/she probably just said that to vent, yet most of you on here just look at that one little thing and completely ignore the main message. I empathize with the OP: sometimes customers can be way out of line and really, there is nothing you can do about it. At least the OP will be respectful to service people in the future when he/she gets his/her real job.
I know it sucks to have your degree and still have to put up with rude people, but nowadays, you need more than just a degree to get a job. OP, maybe try to network with some of your regulars? Or better yet, pick up a trade.
‘tube steak’?
hmm, i thought that was toilet humour for a certain ‘member’ of the male anatomy. seems i know even less than you about bologna.
Guava said, “I know it sucks to have your degree and still have to put up with rude people…”
i don’t get it? university grads vs rude customers – you seem to be implying that those with degrees are somehow worthy of more respect, whereas those without a degree can expect to be treated like shit by rude people.
respect is EARNED, not conferred upon some snobby barista with university degree
Techcafe, the degree is not the point. Be nice to people who work in lower paying jobs, no matter what their background might be.
If spitting in my coffee makes it frothy, then go for it. You guys can’t make a cappucino for shit, so maybe you can be the first with your most excellent qualifications.
Who has time to EARN respect at a coffee shop?
Haha, you fucking retard. If you were so fucking intelligent you wouldn’t be WORKING AT A FUCKING COFFEE SHOP. University degree does not equal worldliness either, cunt. Get a real job.
just graduated and working at a coffee shop, speaks a lot about some people.but then again, art is considered a degree now.this person has a complex of sorts, maybe a borderline schitzo, avoid her/him like a plague if you know she/he works at.as for being worldly, well i dunno, you can take a trip and not leave home.methinks thou protests much too much.but hey, everyone can have a free bitch, isn’t that why this column is here.have at it people, and don’t spare the blood.we dark creatures live on it.
“I don’t have a degree from university. It was just not for me. I respect those who do. However, I do not respect those who think they are better than me because they have one.”
At least you don’t have a looming debt that feels like it will never be repaid with everyone’s uncle’s dog’s shit collector calling to milk you for more.
And why the FUCK are the university you pay thousands of dollars to attend asking for ‘charitable and tax write-off donations’ not one year after you get out into the world?
I’m still PAYING for attending your ‘institution’ and will be for another decade and you want me to throw more at you? are you fucking MENTAL? get a clue.
Newsflash! It’s not the economy! Halifax ALWAYS has been full of people with degrees working jobs that require high school at best – usually talking about how it’s all going to “take off any day” with offshore oil or some shit.
you said it, Murder Junkie… so true
add to that… Harper may be the worst arsehole PM we’ve ever had, but he was right about one thing… the ‘culture of defeat’ here.
“I know it sucks to have your degree and still have to put up with rude people”
Well it sucks if you don’t have a degree and still have to put up with assholes. You pretentious prima donna.
I guess that’s why for years, I, “Mr High School Grad” had to correct reports from “Mr University Grad” with so many spelling and grammar errors, it was ridiculous.
Congrats on your honors degree, that’ll be one sugar please.
So, in jobs where its all Honors Grads doing non-retail or some other ‘lowly’ job everyone is nice to each other and there’s no rudeness? That makes sense, I guess.
You are right – it doesn’t mean that you are a nit wit. It means you have an honors degree and zero ambition to do anything else. You might actually want to keep that to yourself. Nothing screams ‘loser’ quite like it. Oh, and the reason people are rude to you is because you are a snotty little cunt with a bloated sense of self importance.
