I can’t believe you came to work like that and actually think it is OK to be making food for people. And you had the nerve to get your back up with me when I politely decided to forgo my sandwich because you were obviously ill, yet you told me it would be you who would be making my sandwich, as you continued to sniffle and wipe your nose with your hands as we spoke. Perhaps that coffee joint doesn’t provide you with adequate sick time, and if that is so I do feel for you. HOWEVER, if you decide to come to work sick and your job entails making food for people all day don’t expect customers not to question that and leave, as I did, because they’ve can’t afford to get sick either. As well, your establishment serves many people who are caring for elderly and/or ill members of their families, and passing on your virus to them can (and will) create situations from which many will not recover–no joke.
Stop being so self-centered and entitled; and if you can’t stay home when you are sick, at least stay away from food prep areas and address your customers’ queries honestly and politely. Maybe the worker had no choice. Some coffee chains insist you come in, even if you are sick. Or that person may need those hours to pay the rent.
I will agree that using one’s hand as a tissue is not cool on any level – perhaps you should have offered a gentle reminder to the poor employee instead of storming out in a huff – most of these places use plastic gloves when preparing your ‘untainted’ sandwich anyway. If you don’t pick up a cold there, there’s millions of other places where you can, most of them invisible.
Then there’s this: last week, my neighbour’s kid was called into work at a certain coffee chain for an hour. This young person said, no, I’ve got a bad cold, I can’t. Kid was told you must come in, cold or no cold, said chain did not care if they had to drag themselves there. Kid does that and is kept for an additional 5 hours, sick as a dog. To serve nasty ass, unsympathetic prima donnas like you, OP. So fuck off.

Most of these coffee shops don’t have sick leave. Also, they pay their employees peanuts so they really can’t afford losing work over a runny nose! So, when all things are considered the employee often has little or no choice.
As for the hygenic issues … big deal. So you might get a cold .. boohooo! If you don’t like the risk, make your own damned coffee. You obviously work for the government, and I wouldn’t hire you on a bet. A worker that comes in when they’re sick .. well that’s the kind of committment it takes to be promoted, if you work for me.

It’s that time of year. She likely was sick. Might be fall allergies. You had a right as a customer to ask her to please use a tissue.
But just so you know.. it doesn’t really matter. When you touch the odd doorknob-about-town, does it even begin to occur to you how filthy that doorknob is? And do you always wash your hands after touching those various doorknobs before doing something as intimate as using the bathroom or rubbing your eyes?
If not, you’re already going to germ hell and you’re still alive. So… the only difference between this and that doorknob is in your mind. It LOOKS grosser, therefore you notice it. (And the service person was likely a LOT cleaner than the knobs you’ve been fondling all day – that’s the other difference)
These are facts. I’m not encouraging you to sanitize every knob before you touch it. That would be neurotic enough to land you a little “Sick Time” of your own – likely somewhere in the neighbourhood of the Abbey J. I’m suggesting that germs aren’t actually all that bad for you and will, in fact, strengthen your immune system. There is a limit of course. Keep your bathroom and fridge clean. Don’t let dishes fester and make sure you wipe after going. Basic stuff that keeps you from being gross. But just know that you’re probably not going to die from this, k?

That was the point I made in my post, PATD, most of these places use plastic gloves so unless said employee hawked a nice green loogie on the sandwich, the OP is overreacting.
