  1. this really should be directed at everyone with a steering wheel in front of them…
not just the bus driving subset.

  2. It could also be directed toward those with handlebars in front of them, bicycle and motorcycle handlebars alike.

  3. meh, they’re really fucking themselves over more than the person they slam into.
I agree they should use them, but I let bike’s get away with more since they’re putting their balls on the line.

  4. then you shouldn’t be so close behind the bus. what happens if you piull around it and ran over your mom, or someone else. would you come here and bitch that they didn’t watch where you were going?

  5. LS – they shouldn’t be crossing in front of a city bus anyway, it’s not a school bus with flashing red lights. Metro Transit planning and I got into a debate about getting another stop placed in Burnside last year and their argument was that it’s unsafe to walk in front of a bus (which is what most people have been taught, wait till it leaves and cross behind it) and that they don’t have any stops that encourage people to walk in front of buses.

Then I pointed out the stop on the Halifax side of the MacDonald when they make the right turn to swing down to Barrington. Those people who catch the 2 & 4 next to Stad always cross in front of the bus. The guy at MT denied over and over again that this occurs and that drivers would be reporting it.

But to the OP, while the driver should be using his signals, the brake lights should be a hint that he is preparing to stop and that you need to reduce your speed as well. And as a hint, on all the newer low-floor units with a driveline retarder, the brake lights come on as soon as the driver releases the accelerator and the retarder begins to slow down the bus. There is plenty of notice given by the brake lights. Only exception of course would be a panic stop when the driver would go directly onto the brakes to make a sudden stop.

  6. v o r, you better think again. there is a stop at the halifax shopping center, once you turn off bayers road, that they stop about 6 feet or so before the stop sign.i have personally seen people get off the 2 or any other bus that uses it. to get off, and walk the couple of feet and walk out into the crosswalk there, only to be almost ran over, by some fool trying to go around the bus, to save an extra 2 seconds. it’s the first stop after they turn in and before they get to the royal bank one. most peope will know which one i mean.somebody is gonna get killed there yet.

  7. Asking bus drivers to obey the rules of the road. There’s a novel idea, somewhat akin to insisting on literacy from members of CUPW.

  8. Turn signals are optional on most new cars….don’t believe me, just watch traffic for 5 minutes. Buses have a habit of sometimes using their signal, but ONLY as they dart into traffic.
