If I read another article suggesting the best way to deal with apparent labour shortages (first of all, where?) is for people to continue working long past retirement age I’m going to scream. I know it’s hard for you (Boomers) to contemplate your mortality but you cannot live forever. And therefore you cannot work forever. And therefore this theory is BS.

The actual solution is for you to retire gracefully having trained someone to take on your role. Who will then gracefully do the same. This is the natural order of things. Not working til you are senile and all of the young people have slit their wrists. —Young and Close to Leaving

  1. Thanks for painting all boomers with the same broad brush, you sanctimonious twit.

I retired last year because I felt I had nothing more to offer on the job. I was only too happy to pass on my position to a young lady in her mid-20s (my daughter’s age) – unfortunately, there is a small segment of boomers who live beyond their means so quitting a well-paying job is not an option – these individuals cling on to their jobs with embedded fingernails because of their greed. And on the bottom of the boomer heap are those who CAN’T AFFORD to quit.

Put that into your Yoda pipe and smoke it.

  2. i will keep working as long as i want to, and as long as my boss (in his 20’s) continues to CHOOSE to keep paying ME 2-3X the salary he pays starters.

he is in the business to make money, so why doesn’t he want to let me go and save half my salary? because my 40 years of experience is worth it to him, plus my work ethic, which appears to be beneath the lofty self entitlement of too many starters.

no, i will not step aside and force my boss to hire 4 people to do half what i currently do.
you can work your way in and up in the workforce by MERIT the same way others before you did. the ‘natural order’ of things is for you to take it if the other cannot hold onto to it, if you can. not have it handed to you. god. please don’t breed. you can only have survived due to modern medicine and seatbelt laws.

  3. Dear TT take a look at the comments right after yours and realize there is truth to what the OB posted.

  4. I will work as long as I have a breath in me or until the month of January after I turn 71 and can no longer contribute to my pension. There is a helluva lot of money contributed by my employer and I plan on maxing out that bad boy.

HINT: If you have to choose between two jobs but one is less pay but provides a benefit plan where the employer matches your pension contribution. Go for the low paying job as it will pay huge in the long run. Many go for the $$$ and at 45 realize they are royally fucked.

  5. Sure, there’s truth to it. But it’s not the absolute truth. Some people simply don’t want to retire because they actually like their work and the socialization that it involves.

This wasn’t the case for me. Forty-one years on the workforce was quite enough, thanks. Now it’s time for my own personal projects including how to hang glide over Cape Split.

  6. so let me get this right, since i am mostly senile in your mind.

you think i should voluntarily give up my job, at which i am productive, valuable, valued and enjoy just so it leaves a spot for someone else? you think this should be the motivation for retiring? altruism?

would you like my car? i have two, so should i give one to someone who doesn’t have any?

i have investments for my retirement. should i cash out and pay off your student loans?

i have a storeroom full of food – how’s your cupboard? should you come on over and fill your grocery bags? i also have closets full of linens, duvets and wool socks.

of course it doesn’t matter that i have been working part time since i was 12 for spending money (washing dishes, sweeping up hair in a salon school), and full time since 18.

of course it doesn’t matter that i have have lived in some god awful places while paying off debts or saving to buy something.

of course it doesn’t matter that i have moved back and forth across the continent to follow the job market.

and you know what? what i have done in my life does NOT matter to you or anyone except me and mine. it is none of your business if i have acquired ‘stuff’ through my hard work and effort. it is not yours. go work for your own, it should take you 40 years if you do it right.

now, as to what you MAY enjoy that i and my generation, and those before, have have worked for and gladly pass on to you is universal medicare ( it did not exist when i was young) safe and reliable birth control. CMHC mortgages. reasonable working conditions, labour laws, civil rights, human rights. oh, and the internet.

i choose to donate money, time and ‘stuff’ to those i choose. you are NOT one of them.

i would be shamed to stand there, as you are, with my hand held out for charity.

  7. Of all the dystopian films I watched in the 70’s, I always figured that Logan’s Run had the longest odds against coming to pass.
Guess I should call my bookie. If he hasn’t retired. Or exploded in the Carousel.

  8. me too ivan. i figure they will be shooting oldsters in the streets for fun. wait a minute, some thugs already got the ball rolling.

no, it will be done ‘for the good of society’ as so many hideous plans embrace. we will be shuffled off to camps so our goods can be enjoyed by the young and vigorous who, after all, will get more enjoyment from, hence deserve, that stuff.

  9. It certainly came as a surprise to me to learn that I was part of the 1 Percent.
    Whoo Noo?

  10. We don’t need Boomers to work longer to address labour shortages, because labour shortages are a myth: the # of vacant jobs per unemployed worker is continuously increasing. On top of that, if there’s a vacancy, I doubt a Boomer will fill it.

  12. OB, see this is what happens when you get a medal just for participation in your youth. Now you think the world owes you a living.

So you are going to slit your wrists because you can’t get a job? Grow a spine, you little whip dick, and hit the bricks. Sheesh—kids today!

  13. The day the wolves and even the ones in sheep’s clothing stop coming to my door will be the day this boomer stops giving servitude.

  14. The problem is, a lot of boomers did a shitty job managing their money and now they can’t retire because they were too busy buying now and paying later (and not putting enough money away to actually retire).

So the younger generation has to suffer for it because there’s little to no movement in the work chain. What’s annoying is the fact that boomers didn’t have to deal with the shit the younger generation has to deal with now re: job shortages because they didn’t have to wait for people to retire. I really wish the boomers going on about how the world doesn’t ‘owe’ anyone a job and how they have every right to not retire and blahblah had to live through what the younger generation has to live through right now. It’s not OUR fault your generation did a piss poor job managing your money (not all, but a lot) and now can’t retire…. all the while complaining because your kids are still living at home and are un or under employed. Well GUESS WHAT? We’re all working shitty jobs (if we can find one in the first place) because you fucked yourself and now won’t or can’t retire.

Don’t like the truth? Too bad.

  15. Couldn’t have said it better myself, PK. Not to mention, many baby boomers got jobs with a high school diploma alone while us Gen Ys have to apply for the same positions with a Uni degree AND years of experience.

  16. PK, a lot of youngins have this perception, and it is false. That Boomers spent more than previous cohorts is simply a reflection of economic progress. It should also be stated that Boomers store most of their equity (more than past generations) in real estate – so what may be perceived as reckless spending could actually be a form of investment. Some Boomers will actually have to work longer than previous generations, too (thank Harper for that). The stereotypical BB need only to downgrade from their 1800 square foot family home to a 1000 square foot bungalo in order to finance their retirement wants.

Milk n Juice: grade (and credential) inflation.

    Signed,

  17. Not to mention the boomers did a pretty good job of kicking the football that is government debt down the road for us to pay. They seem to think it’s more important to pump unlimited amounts of tax dollars into their pensions and worry about who pays for them in their old age than it ever was to pay their own way. Well congrats, you have successfully enslaved your children and your children’s children for generations to come, with your greed and sense of entitlement. “Why should I quit my job if I’m still able to work, be productive, be appreciated, enjoy my job, etc…”. It’s all me, me, me with you guys. Boomers retiring with pensions and taking jobs that should be filled by young people. In some cases, retiring with a pension and working on a second pension. It’s no wonder the younger generation is so entitled, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and they have been taught by the best. I will take all the dislikes I get with this post as confirmation of how right I am. Because you don’t like to hear the truth doesn’t mean it’s not the truth.

The most insulting of all is this “you think the world owes you a living” bullshit. It’s a fact that this generation will grow up with less opportunity than the previous one, for the first time in a few generations. Something you know absolutely nothing about because you were handed your opportunities on a silver platter. Bunch of hypocrites!!!!

“Because you don’t like to hear the truth doesn’t mean it’s not the truth.”

Yes, it is true that truth is the truth even if we don’t like to hear it but two points arise:

    (1) You claim that the Boomers were the ones who “kicked the government debt down the road for us to pay.” I don’t suppose you would have any hard evidence to support that assertion, would you? By “hard evidence” I mean numbers, not attachments, quotations and certainly no more empty hot blow from you. Just the numbers. Give your sources.

    (2) Assuming – admittedly a large one – that you have managed to provide the numbers for number one, you go on to make an an more difficult assertion to support, that the increase in the government debt is the result of the Boomer’s “greed and sense of entitlement.” I don’t suppose you would have any hard evidence to support that assertion, would you? By “hard evidence” I mean numbers, not attachments, quotations and certainly no more empty hot blow from you. Just the numbers. Give your sources.

Yes, it’s true that truth is the truth even if we don’t like to hear it but truth requires more than just unsupported assertions from blowhards like you.

  19. How about you “prove” me wrong then. Its pretty hard to argue with an exponentially grown national debt since you boomer pigs took office. Seeing as my generation is not, or never has been, in control of the purse strings, I guess I can rest my case without too much “proof”.

So, which pension will you be giving up? Will it be your teachers pension or, maybe your professors pension? We all saw your “retirement” photos when Sonic posted your personal shit last year. You know what they say, “if you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem”. OINK, OINK!!!

  20. “Its pretty hard to argue with an exponentially grown national debt since you boomer pigs took office.”

It’s hard to be rational when you’re angry. Exponential growth in national debt would only be problematic if GDP was not growing. In fact, GDP has also grown exponentially such that the ratio of public debt to GDP (arguably a better measure of a country’s financial situation, much like a person’s income-debt ratio) has stagnated since the last of the Baby Boomers were born (33% in 1962 vs 31% in 2008). Similar trends are in place for net federal debt to GDP.

All of this means that the hysteria over national debt is just that – hysteria. The levels of debt we’re encountering are not unprecedented, nor are they unique to a particular demographic group. More importantly, they seem to be manageable given the size of our national economy.

    : The Blowhard (03/24, 12:43PM)

Let’s look at a few of the Blowhard’s assertions.

    (1) “How about you “prove” me wrong then?” Since I was never the one to make your assertions, it is up to YOU to provide evidence to support them, not me. It is not up to me to “prove” anything at all, least of all that you are wrong. But I don’t suppose you are able to understand this.

    (2) Now, in spite of what I requested in respect to hard evidence – numbers rather than your usual “hot blow” – here it comes – your blustering “hot blow.” You claim that there has been “exponential growth” in respect to the national debt. Can you give numbers to support your claim? By how much did that “exponential growth” in fact grow? What baseline are you using to chart its exponential growth? All you have given, as expected, is just bluster, just hot blow.

    (3) You claim further that this “exponential growth” took place after the “boomer pigs” took office. Can you tell us just when the “boomer pigs” took office? Can you specify a date? Further, can you specify any causal connection between such “exponential growth” and the advent of the “boomer pigs” to office? Can you provide hard evidence – numbers, not just blustering how blow – to establish that cause effect relationship? No, I didn’t think so. It’s all just bluster, just hot blow.

    (4) You go on to assert assert that your generation has “never been in control of the purse strings.” Assuming you are not in your teens, can you support that claim with hard evidence – numbers – and not just more bluster, just more hot blow? No, it seems not. On the basis of that empty assertion you then go on to further claim that, “I guess I can rest my case without too much ‘proof.'” But of course you can’t because you have no “proof” and, a fortiori, you have no such “case.” But I know you will never understand this. Just the usual bluster, just the usual hot blow.

    (5) Now, here comes the usual ad hominem attack from the Blowhard. He wants to turn the question against me personally. He wants to know which pension I will be giving up but, in addition to being an illegitimate “leading question,” it is irrelevant to the issue at hand. The Blowhard’s charges which I specified above (10:52) and have been refuted, as expected, on the grounds that he failed utterly to provide any hard evidence for his false assertions. in the present post.. Having now descended to his usual sneering level, the one at which he usually operates, however, he will never understand that. Sadly, all he has is bluster and hot blow. But he will never understand that.

    (6) Finally, in desperation, the Blowhard resorts to outright falsehood. He claims that “Sonic,” whoever he is, has posted my “retirement” photos. This is very interesting since there are no such photos. If you have them, please post them. They would be very interesting to see. But, of course, you can’t because you don’t. Just more bluster, just more hot blow.

I have numbered my points for easy reference. Take your pick.

    THE BLOWHARD (03/24, 7:01PM)

As expected, the Blowhard was unable to respond to my six points. As expected, instead of any hard evidence to support his slanderous claims about the “boomer pigs,” all we got was the Blowhard’s usual bluster, his usual hot blow.

Desperate now – he’s backed in a corner – on a site which prizes anonymity, he posts what he takes to be my “retirement photos” but admits that “maybe the name and the info is wrong.” Does the Blowhard have a brain? If the name and the info is wrong, then why is he posting it? Of course, one must remember that it is just another of the Blowhard’s blustering attempts to smear and ridicule. That is all.

Not just that, the Blowhard then magnanimously proclaims, “I’ll let you be the judge.” Does the Blowhard have a brain? Doesn’t he understand that he won’t “let” me be anything at all, that he has neither the power nor the intelligence? As usual, the brainless Blowhard has failed to provide any evidence for his slander, for his attempts to smear. Of course, for the Blowhard that doesn’t matter. His game is to sneer and smear, nothing more.

With a flourish the brainless Blowhard announces, “Also I accused some boomers of working on two pensions, so, yes, it is relevant.” The Blowhard lacks even the minimal intelligence to understand that his simple “accusation” does not establish any relevance whatsoever. The Blowhard can accuse anyone of anything he likes. For the Blowhard, it’s open season. But the Blowhard will never realize that hard evidence is required. Who are these people working on two pensions? What are their names? Which pensions would they be? No, no evidence, just the Blowhard’s accusation since, for the Blowhard, his “accusation” is itself sufficient, it is itself self-validating.

The Blowhard’s self-validating “accusation” brings us back to my first point (03/24, 5:10PM) where he demanded, “How about you prove me wrong then?” In the Blowhard’s view, his empty “assertions,” like his “accusations,” are self-validating. The Blowhard failed to understand that since I wasn’t the one making the assertions about pensions, I didn’t need to “prove” anything. Of course, the Blowhard can “assert” anything he likes. He can assert, “The moon is made of green cheese” but, given the Blowhard’s diminished understanding, if someone disagrees all he has to do is to reply, “How about you prove me wrong then?” Being mindless, the Blowhard doesn’t realize that the burden is on him, the one making the assertion. He will never understand that because he is stupid.

Do now write back. I see that I am talking not just to a mindless board but to a malicious, sneering Blowhard. It has not been pleasant.

I can count on three fingers how many times I’ve disliked somebody’s comment so out of the 4 you have, you can put me down for 1. Instead of just hitting dislike and be happy with that I will explain my dislike so there will be no misunderstanding.

People come on here anonymously and expect that participants honour and respect that wish. What were you thinking?

The way I see it is MM asked you to give numbers to support your assertions. Would it have been out of the realm of possibilities to answer….I can’t give numbers, it’s my belief or gut feeling or it’s what I was led to believe. Those answers would have been acceptable. Instead you decided to deliver a low blow in my books, much like Wog Dog would have done.

Your post (03/25, 8.24AM) makes me ask myself ” Who is the most childish in this war of words? I believe you won that skirmish hands down.

I get more enjoyment reading you and Wheels going at it…..seems to be more evenly matched imo.

Btw, I believe you are a better driver than Wheels….he or she just wants the recognition.

  27. Its been awhile, but who was it that posted Blow Me/Life Sucks info all over the place? Then who was it that did it to Wogdog… with pictures too? And who did it to Boru? And then who did it to MM? Wasn’t it a summit regular(s) that figured him out from the Herald website and then that troll Sonic picked it up from there? Sure I mailed a postcard to one poster but never actually revealed that persons information. Its the regular regulars that do all that and then blame the “trolls” and walk away thinking their hands are clean.

Sure are a lot of snakes here, eh?

  28. So, that was you who signed me up for a lifetime subscription to UTNE Reader?
    Well played, you evil bastard.
    Well played , indeed.

  29. Hold on, Ivan. Signing people up for anything in the mail is mailfraud and could also be identity theft. Nukka don’t play like that but he does like empty funny threats. Nukka also has a crush on you 🙂

Let me know if you want a postcard though. I’ll be in Ottawa this Friday so that should make for a great postmark. Maybe not as good a postmark as Niagara Falls, but we’re going back there in a couple months so I can make that happen too.

  30. Eyes above the equator, Big Fella. Postcard from the National War Museum might be nice, if you’re in the vicinity.

  31. Don’t worry Ivan, my crush is superficial in that I picture you as a feminine version of Clay Aiken. The only penis I deal with is my own and I don’t even like it, too small and doesn’t work right.

But alas, a postcard cannot be mailed as I only know your first name (which of course isn’t Ivan, lol).
