to all the fake ganstas in the “darkside”
do you honestly think the north end dartmouth is a ghetto?
you wouldnt last a day in compton or any other real ‘hood’.
fake losers, with your really lame darkside tats.
dartmouth is a fucking haven when compared to other places,
there isnt a single home with bars on the windows anywhere in dartmouth, but you think it is ghetto,
laughable

North end Dartmouth is no ghetto, it’s a trailer park. Just like Fairview and Spryfield.
I’d like to see them try to live it up in East Baltimore.
Are you kidding me? Gangbangers posting their challenges to rival gangs at the Coast?!
You may want to re-read the bitch, HKM. Unless this guy really is from Compton and just wants to let these Darkside mafuckas know who they be dealin’ wit.
Your probably right, mr.man. I can be overly-sensitive when it comes to this subject. I lived in the Northend for a bit, and the mentality of these so called gangstas could be very frustrating. I found the wanna-bes were often more unstable than actual gang members because they felt that they had something to prove.
I spent some time In Jamacia, Queens… Now that is a rough part of town. Shootings every other day, and hey, that’s where 50 cent is from, to give you an idea. I’d like to know how long those guys would last in a real hood too. Might give them some perspective for the glamorized ghetto lifestyle they seem so eager to identify with.
I’m not sure comparing the lifestyle of “Dark Side Dwellers” to that of ghetto’s in countries that do not observe Canadian human rights or to countries that sanction the civilian possession and use of hand guns or to countries run by military or a corrupt police force is really comparing apples to oranges. To draw a meaningful comparison we’d have to look to CANADA’S largest cities like Toronto and Vancouver and compare what’s going on there to what’s going on here. Considering we have the highest per capita death rate via violent crime here in oh-so-fucking-friendly Nova Scotia, the OP is dead wrong.
Yes, dartmouthy (and OP), there are far worse places with much worse conditions to live in. But, that does not mean that their conditions are in any way pleasant. Growing up in an environment of ignorance, violence and poverty will impact a person regardless of how big the area in which it is contained actually is. But, I think generally most people in this type of environment work hard to try to escape it, and it is only the weakest (in character or mentality) and the unlucky who succumb to it.
The yo-yo hommies in their souped up dodge neon cars with the neon logo removed. yeah, you’re cool.
I was in dartmouth yesterday and this woman got cut off, which was partly her fault in the first place, so she jumps out of her car at the red light, leaving her young kids in the car and goes up to the other car and starts screaming in their faces threatening to hit them, it was crazy.
That’s what I mean, virgomom–there is so much anger and very little self-control.
let’s migrate them to new york. i’ve been there and let me fucking say that they would last all of 2 seconds. even the regular folks there are fucken nuts. and what the hell is wrong with fairview, except we are starting to get the castoffs from the other problem areas moving here, and fucking around.george carlin had the right idea, about making places for different types of crooks and people. fence them in and shoot them if they try to get out. but the problem isn’t the punks, it’s the courts and lazy fucking parents. i have 2 sons, and they are great, had a bit of trouble years back, but smartened the hell up, when they knew what lay ahead of them.tough love, is better than tapping on the hands.
most people would last all of 2 seconds landing in the ghetto of some horrid country where some right to bare arms trumps every crime statistic known about violent crime
The right to “bare” arms? Dear God! What sort of wretched hellhole would allow such a thing?
It’s those ‘dam’ heathens.
I’d like to see how long Jimmy Melvin Jr. would last in LA, Detroit or Miami. He’d be crying in the airport begging to get back on the plane home.
Keep going down the number 7 and you get to the real darkside – shoot em up.
You only have to fear when there are more than 1. These shitbags are only tough when they are in a group…
I live in the North End and Pinecrest>>Jackson has had sirens screaming nonstop all summer. Evidently the dirtbags are fighting for territory or just applying Darwinism.
I bare my arms all the time…hehehehe! Even when in The Darkside.
Does anyone remeber the Herman cartoon that showed the real meaning of the right to bare arms?
How are the attitudes of some people here any different from the people you are criticizing? I’m not talking about immoral/illegal activity. I am talking about a knee jerk mentality. Although one party uses words and the other action, both parties propose violence as a solution.
Basil, I found your statement disturbing, but since the original Darkside gang did originate from the area you are implying, and the Northend Darkside gang are actually wannabes, I will assume that you are stating facts and not implying something else. Except the ‘shoot em up’ comment’…I still find that disturbing.
People from NS that say they are from the getto are just looking for a EXCUSE for people to feel bad for them so they have an excuse for being unemployed, uneducated, having 8 kids, being on Social Assistance, for having a gun talking like idiot etc… Wanna-be gangsta’s!!haha Kinda funny really if you think what these people would do being dropped in certian parts of Jamacia or Compton.
The rough parts of Dartmouth and other areas of HRM aren’t bad at all even compared with some other parts of the Maritimes for Christ’s sake! Ever been to Saint John, New Brunswick? What a shithole! They also have a higher per capita crime rate than Halifax now too, as per the latest StatCan statistics for 2008. See for yourself!
It’s easy to act tough when you live in a place where people don’t habitually carry firearms. In big US cities (not even necessarily bad parts of them) you never really know for sure and better be able to back up that “gansta” attitude with more than words & fashion.
LIFE SUCKS, Fairview fucking sucks! It’s a fucking smelly armpit.
Umm, did someone forget Newark? That place needs to be fucking incinerated.
I moved out of fairview yrs ago because I hated all the little wanna be thugs. Now anytime I drive thru there it envokes such a ghettoness rage in me, I always want to get out of the car and start pounding on someone. I think there’s something in the air around fairview or something.
as i stated, the only problem with fairview, is the imported little punks. when the angels were out here, you hardly heard a fucking peep out of any punk ass puke. same went with spryfield, and a few other areas where they had clubhouese. now i’m not saying they were good to have around, but really, there were a lot less shit going down daily. and broc, what fucking eden do you live in? i know it can’t be anywhere in the twin cities. if parents took fucking control of their little fucking brats, oiss on s.s. and child welfare, and gave out somee real fucking punishment for once, half this problem would go away.but oh no, big brother government sticks it’s fucking nose in our lives. well bubby, if they won’t let you control your fucking hellspawn kids, then give them to the fucking government, and let them face the music and/or shame, when little johnny/janie crack head gets busted.parents of today make me fucking sick.take away their game for a few minutes, for beating up the little old lady, that just got a few dollars on her social security or pension cheque. smack them little fucks upside the head, you might like it. and you might even save someone else’s life someday. take back fucking control, don’t let them control you,or you are fucked.
I head to dartmouth fairly regularly to visit people… usually north end…
and it isn’t too bad. Cheap housing for sure…. though I think all the hills and fucked up streets are worse to deal with than the punks and moron’s personally.
Anytime you glamourize a lifestyle, there will be kids who want to emulate it. The gangsta life has been made mainstream and acceptable because of hiphop videos. Kids see those guys acting tough, brandishing guns, getting all the money they want and all the whores they can afford by living this way. So, these kids think that’s the ticket to the easy life.
I’m in no way saying this is the sole cause, lack of parenting and shit justice system that doesn’t actually punish crimes also contributes. But, where you have young people, you’ll have emulation of whatever is considered cool at the time, these days it’s being a thug. Unfortunately, they’re going to learn the hard way that it’s not cool.
As for our “gangstas” not being able to last ten minutes in any one of the other places mentioned, I say- good. That means we’re not that bad. Yet.
TDF, you make some good points , however, music videos are not the only source of glorified violence. Video games, television shows, and movies are other sources of so-called entertainment that young people feed upon. Some of them will be negatively influenced by this material. We glorify violence and death for entertainment purposes but when it happens for real we are horrified, the victims and families forever scarred.
You just have to remember if one of these idiots point a gun at you, stand right in front of them. They will miss you. They don’t know one end from another.
it was better when the hells angels were in charge…yummy maroc
Oceanlady, you’re right. I was just thinking more of the whole cool image thing. The clothes, the bling, the cars, the girls- all rewards for living dangerously and being “gangsta”. And hey, if you’re shot eight times and live to tell the tale, you may even you get a record deal.
Video games and tv definitely add to it. All part of the bigger picture.
TDF / Oceanlady – If you guys were around in the 50s you’d no doubt blame this whole thing on Rock ‘n Roll & comic books.
I’ll admit I don’t know the answer but if I were to guess I’d say that it may be that there’s more & more families where both parents must work (I agree with TDF on the lack of solid parenting point) and more & more people who spank their kids when they commit a wrong are looked upon as child abusers.
I don’t think TDF & Oceanlady are necessarily saying it’s the music that’s the problem, Murder Junkie. They’re commenting on the image presented in videos/games/tv, not the music itself, so the comparison to the Rock ‘n Roll of the 50s is off the mark.
Unless, of course, Oceanlady & TDF are of the opinion that Elvis’ pelvis was causing kids to become gangstas, in which case it’s a fair comparison.
I agree with TDF and Murder Junkie. Give the little fuckers a boot in the arse when they’re young. Teach ’em young that there’s a fucking penalty when you do something wrong. Shit, my father nailed me in the face when I was younger! It taught me a lot… put the fear of God into me. I’ll never do that again. I learned that there are consequences. This “more & more people who spank their kids when they commit a wrong are looked upon as child abusers” is bullshit. Wait until it’s a child, of a politician or of someone in these groups who are against so-called child abuse, who pulls out a gun or a knife and shoots or stabs their parents. I’ll bet then that they’d look back and wished they had given junior a boot in the arse when they slapped the neighbor or beat a kitten to death with a fucking hockey stick. The law’s too fucking lenient on young offenders. IT’S TIME FOR A FUCKING CHANGE!!
RaphEmer – All I’m saying is I think people who blame violent artwork of any kind (be it video games, movies, music, etc) are full of shit. I base this theory on the idea that kids in more affluent neighborhoods (where there’s more of a likely-hood of parents being able to afford adequate child supervision) watch the same movies, play the same video games, and listen to the same music. I admit there’s more to it that meets the eye but it’s too easy to blame the influence of mainstream media. I’m not even saying the parents are necessarily to blame as I’m sure most wouldn’t be dual income families if they could afford not to.
violent imagery wouldn’t be popular among teens if they couldn’t identify with it and I’m not sure ‘rebellion’ has so much to do with the influence of violent entertainment as it does with young people simply coming into their own. I mean, teens are suppose to either accept or reject value systems placed on them to arrive at one of their own. The anxt and violence featured in today’s entertainment (yesterday’s too) is reflective of that, not for “lack of discipline”.
hey now i live in north end dartmouth
I’m not blaming music, I’m blaming the imagery presented in the videos. I’m saying that the glamourization of violence as a lifestyle is greatly affecting our youth today. This is fed to kids daily in videos and yes, some tv and games, and you can’t tell me that youth do not emulate their heroes, that’s common no matter what era you’re from. The difference is, the music or videos from those other eras did not tell kids that being a pimp is a good thing, it didn’t tell them that solving problems with gunplay is a good thing, it didn’t say that a gang life will get you rich. And if you don’t think that hiphop videos say this, I’ve got to wonder what you’re seeing when you watch them.
I couldn’t agree with you more TDF. Certainly there is more to it that just the entertainment business but it surely is a contributing factor. I think it’s a mesh of a lot of things such as the entertainment industry, poor parenting, lack of balanced consequences (parenting and in the legal system as well as at school), and I would agree that your social-economic position plays a part however cannot be considered the sole contributer to this type of mentality. There are plenty of middle-to-upper class people who engage in the most barbaric forms of human action possible. Like I said, it’s hard to blame one specific thing as the underlying cause.
Personally, I play GTA all the time and it doesn’t make me want to join a gang. I also listen to Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, Pantera, Slayer etc.; I’m not about to go shoot up a school. Perhaps all of the reasons I mentioned above combined with a persons mental and behaviour capacities can provide some sort of an explanation.
What inspires violent video if not lyrical content of the music? “Imagery” extends to include “the song”. Still, the song is a reflection of how society feels so there’s nothing wrong with the song. There’s something wrong with the society. Cracking a hit off billboard charts does not make an artists song sing any different… (until their next release when they sell out to the masses and stay ‘Nickleback’ er whatever) The fact that the hip-hop WITH focus on violent imagery is popular is the scariest thing of all.
I agree with the Easy bitch. Pantera kicks!
I think it’s interesting there is clear correlation between the occurrence of schizophrenia, other mental illness and the socioeconomic status of it’s victims. It seems if you live a stressed out, fucked up life full of anxiety, yelling, crime, addictions, lying, self-loathing, loathing your neighbour, poverty, and and and… your kids “learn” these behaviors. Funny how the cycle continues more often than it doesn’t.
I think there’s a bit of “chicken and egg” going on. Music lyrics reflect society, (some)society emulates the music. But, the artists writing those lyrics are in some cases actual criminals who have served time, others are wannabes who are trying to portray themselves as the same type of criminal,so to say they reflect society is a little narrow in scope. Most of us don’t live that way, even those in low income areas, but an impressionable youth may think they should be like that and copy it.
I do believe there are those that see these images and want to live that way, I don’t believe it’s the main cause. There are other factors involved. Teens will copy whoever they believe represents what they find attractive. I just find it disturbing that extreme criminal acts are considered normal by youth. You expect a certain amount of rebellion, but this goes beyond rebellion and into a criminal lifestyle that is glorified as having rewards. I can’t think of any other musical style that encourages that extreme behaviour.
Schizophrenia and other mental disorders are cyclic learned behaviour and mainly present in low-income families? Clear correlation? Huh?
As far as ‘spanking’ the kids in the Northend goes, I don’t think that there is lack of this. In fact, when I saw angry parents charging their kids to punish them, I was afraid.
The children I knew from the Northend and other similar areas, who are now fairly scary adults (the ones who are still alive), lived their childhood in fear, then resentment and eventually anger (not to mention the feeling of need and want throughout the whole of their childhood). The music they choose relates to their life in some way and it articulates the feelings they cannot express. When they emulate, it is not about violence and crime, it is about power and making the most out of where they find themselves stuck in life and what they have learned there.
What makes one kid a statistic and one kid a success story involves so many factors, on so many levels, that trying to explain it in a neat little theory that fits all is ridiculous.
HKM>>> “What makes one kid a statistic and one kid a success story involves so many factors, on so many levels, that trying to explain it in a neat little theory that fits all is ridiculous.”
Thank you for injecting some sanity into this discussion.
Oceanlady – I don’t think anyone has been providing “insane” explanations so far. It’s a discussion. It’s speculation. HKM is correct; her post simply mirrors what other posters have been saying – it could be a myraid of things… no one has claimed to know the answer. Again, we are speculating.
Also, this is not a new phenomenon. Outlaws have been idolized since the beginning of time–including the cold-blooded killers.
Also, don’t forget that women love the bad boys!
Genghis Khan got all the chicks.
I grew up in the north end in a single parent, sometimes abusive home. I went through my rebelious stage, drugs, “gangstas”, whatever. The difference between me and the hard people out there now is that I grew up. A lot of them don’t. I think everything that everybody pointed out effects kids. Media, parenting, enviroment’ everything. Some can and will rise above it, like I did and some won’t.
Easy: I’m playing GTA right now. Just bought it, its fun!
That he did! I heard that there are actually millions of direct descendents of Ghengis Khan. Rob Roy MacGregor, Scotland’s ultimate bad boy, is my Great Great Great Great Great Great Grandfather – no joke! And even Osama bin Laden has, what, five wives?
Yep, chicks truly dig the bad boys. You can even see this effect here in Halifax today walking along Spring Garden Road just outside of McDonald’s where all the Wigga guys have the hottie welfare babes hanging all over them.
Oceanlady, “Schizophrenia and other mental disorders are cyclic learned behaviour and mainly present in low-income families? Clear correlation? Huh?”
This has been known for some time. Obviously it’s not a popular view but also one that’s becoming undeniable. Here’s one article supporting the fact:
http://www.schres-journal.com/article/S092…
My parents used corporal punishment on me as a kid, all it taught me was that I needed to be more secretive next time. When I got to be a teen I was into drugs, thievery, drinking and assorted hijinx with a “bad crowd.” Spanking is no substitute for good parenting. Not trying to shit on my parents, just saying that the people who seem to have the best behaved kids are ones who engage with them respectfully and build trust, rather than basing learning around punishment.
Rat, I think you’ve hit the nail on the head… the problem with liars is the lying. Either parents don’t catch on and little Johnny would never bring a gun to school or the parents do catch on but (a) make excuses for their kid (perpetuating the lying) or (b) the kids are treated like Rat here and become BETTER liars while learning violence from their parents.
I wonder if our criminal code makes a good guide to parents… keep your dam hands to yourself! Nobody is allowed to hit anybody with anger on the brain. If kids grew up knowing, embracing and respecting this part of the law I wonder if they’d be so quick to break it every time they’re confronted about anything. If their parents lead by example one can expect the violence to continue generation after generation.
People should have to have a license to become parents. They should have to take a course, then a written test, then a practical before they are allowed to raise children…
then maybe people wouldn’t use spanking, yelling, and shame to discipline/teach their children, and maybe then, regardless of the environment the child grows up in, people might start turning out generally less &$%#ed up, emotionally stunted, and entitled…
But maybe this is just the early morning ramblings of a coffee-less insomniac…
I agree with you Gidget, in theory. But we have tests before we can get our license plus a “probationary period” and look at all of the bad drivers out there. They follow the rules when they have to then as soon as they pass the test they do things “their way”. Not sure if a parenting test would be any different. However, one benefit might be that a parenting test/practical that you suggest might deter some people from having kids once they realize how much work it is. Again though…probably not a large enough effect to really make a difference.
I’m not totally against a reasonable spanking, yelling or shame as discipline tools provided they use these methods correctly. There is nothing wrong with a couple of slaps on the ass or raising your voice, but there is a lot wrong when you beat the kids senseless or go overboard when yelling.
My parents spanked me and I got yelled at but then it was likely the only time I did whatever it was that got that reaction from my folks. There were consenquences and I knew it, and it made me question whether my actions were right or wrong before actually doing it.
The issue these days is that parents won’t (or are too scared to) discpline their children, government has tipped the scales to favour the child so now schools can’t dish out discipline, and the kids know it! They can get away with murder and get a slap on the wrist. Where are the consequences?? Oh yeah, there are none as the bleeding hearts complained and the government took away the common sense rights of people in authority (parents/educators) when it comes to disciplining the kids.
Just wait till these kids get into the workforce and realise there are consequences for screwing up, then they’ll be broke and realise not paying the rent has another consequence, etc, etc. These lessons need to start before grade school, not after graduation.
My feeling is that corporal punishment is unrealistic…when you lose your job or fail to make rent, someone isn’t going to come spank you. I feel like if, from an early age, I was told sincere reasons for why I shouldn’t do bad things, rather than “do this or else: you know what” I would’ve been more well-behaved, not to mention well-adjusted. But then, that’s just conjecture.
Fuck off Broc you ignorant cocksucker. Spryfield is not a trailer park. Like many other communities it has a trailer park in it but the area of Spryfield is not one big trailer park you generalizing jackass. There are actually quite a few nice areas to live in Spryfield with quite a few very nice homes. I am so fucking sick of having to hear about how horrible Spryfeild is on the news and in the papers and now it seems to be a regular cheap shot in the comments here.
