WTF?? $14.44 for a pair of cheap speakers for my computer and there’s a freakin $3.50 (that’s 24.2%) fee tacked on *before* the HST? And you just know that I’ll never see that $3.50 when I “do the right thing” and drop the speakers off at one of those centers the stupid commercials mentioned, where ever they may be (thanks for telling us – oh, wait, you didn’t!) since it’s gone right into the government’s general funds.
You want money so badly, Government? Then instead of stealing from us hard-working Bluenoses, howsabout you stop giving millions to multi-national corporations that don’t need it?

In like 3 or 4 years when your cheap speakers don’t work anymore, you can get your $3.50 back…you’re really going to keep those for the rest of your miserable life?! Ever think it’s for the environment, so that idiots don’t just toss electronics in the trash to sit in a dump forever? They can recycle them to use them for other things. I bought a TV and had to pay a $40 fee, and I’m not complaining. I can’t wait ’till this whole thing blows over and people calm the fuck down. Did people do this when they started to charge $0.10 for a bottle?
What was the fee for????
Oh for the disposal of the speakers….LOL
Don’t we pay for garbage disposal in our taxes anyways…
Ya, melectric, but Nova Scotia is one of the only provinces that give you only $0.05 back. What a rip!
5 cents back for a bottle? Are you sure? I know they only give you 5 cents back for certain bottles like beer bottles but aren’t the other bottles 10?
You know what…I don’t care actually. This is stupid.
And where does most of it wind up in, yup a dump.
This is actually something to applaud the government for, in opinion. It’s a perfect foil for this over-consumptive world in which we live. Electronics are probably in the top three things we shouldn’t be putting in the landfill, and given the amount of lead solder and mercury used in those old CRTs and computers everyone is throwing out nowadays, it’s environmentally unsafe not to do anything about it. Meanwhile electronics take up a massive amount of space in landfills and do not degrade. To the point of it just going to the government coffers is moot. The government needs to pay ACES to take care of the items, so it’s a balanced entry, and if it isn’t, and it bothers you that much, just reconsider when you buy your yearly iPod.
Now whether or not ACES actually recycles the electronics or not is a matter of discussion, because they could be just sending off to a e-dump in China for all I know.
Beware the recycling centres. Most electronics they get can be repaired and sold again! Make sure you fry the fuck out of anything you give them.
The more important point is WTF are you doing with $13 speakers?
There ought to be a law against those horrible little computer speakers that can make James Earl Jones sound like Mickey Mouse,, and Chris Cornell sound like he’s singing through a tampon…
The only suitable use might be for international morse code, or listening to the TV test pattern…
sebastion, how fucking right you are. one such place in n.s., won’t sell you shit, but take this stuff, repair, replace, and then put it on kijiji. this i know for a fact. a friend that worked there told me all about it. then they split the cash between them. yes the bosses know, they are the biggest culprits. not all, but some.and they have the fucking nerve to charge you for a drop off i believe too.
I don’t mind paying the enviro fee on electronics, but I find the amounts they charge is a bit askew. When I got my plasma, I think the fee was $45 on a $1000 tv. Meanwhile, I had to pay about $4 for my $20 alarm clock….if my math is correct, the paid percentage on my tv was 4.5% while the paid percentage on my alarm clock was 20%…so a bit off kilter there.
I don’t know why they can’t just put the same percentage on every electronic they tax.
BMF: I think this is the first time I have completely agreed with you! There should be a law against inferior quality sound systems! I have a 1973 Marantz 2230 400w tube AMP http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3191/244004…
with Fisher STV-872 Tower speakers http://www.audiocircuit.com/A-Images/AA-Br…
Nothing like blasting Soundgarden and Audioslave at 3am. Thank god I have no neighbours to speak of!
Sebastion after I get done putting a couple of high powered rifle bullets, or some shot gun slugs through said items, they’re not repairable. Which is good in a way, I no longer have to spend money buying targets to sight in my guns. Plus do you have any idea how much cooler it looks when you hit an old printer with a sabot 12ga round ?
A target gets a hole in it…the printer fragments into pieces !
As for you assholes who are openly happy about this tax, you stupidity is showing !!!!
Why do people care if someone takes their junk and turns it into something useable? I don’t get it, you didn’t have a use for it anymore, so you throw it out, if someone else can use it, fix it, profit off of it, what do you care? If you are so concerned why not put it on kijiji or something for a buck? I just don’t understand destroying something for the simple fact that you don’t want someone else to get something for nothing….come to think of it, whatever happened to junk brothers? I loved that show.
I agree lorilulu….you’re the one putting it into the recyclers hands. If you don’t want it repaired and resold, for whatever reason, then do like More does and smash the shit out of it first….that’s how they recycle it anyway.
More, it’s not a tax, it’s a fee. The money pays for the program. The budget for the ACES program is available on their website so you can see how that money is spent. Keeping electronics out of the landfill is a great idea for the reasons Fever says. I don’t like paying the fee either, but it’s not a stupid program.
If anything I drop off at the recycling centre is repaired and re-sold, I think it’s wonderful. Way better to have these things reused than recycled. Some people are incredibly clever at fixing things; I seems to lack that intelligence as well as the intelligence More speaks of.
i can see someone fixing them, and giving as a donation to those that can’t a system, but that is as far as i will concede.making money over money is just not cool.
I think it’s a great program too, Miles. And like I said, i have no problem with a fee put onto electronics. I’d just like to see them put into proportion with the price paid on the item.
What makes me chuckle, though, is how on your reciept at Wallyworld when you buy an electronic with the fee it says they sold you the fee as an item on your receipt. LOL you SOLD me a tax, essentially. Hilarity.
I think all the crap electronic Do mostly go to china where people just smash them with hammers and get all nice and contaminated . Suppose to be a ” electronics recycling fee ” . So that said – why drop it off ( tv’s are like 20 bucks or something added on ) at a recycle plant? Its fee is paid – leave the fucker on the curb then . Let the city pick it up and recycle it if they want to tack a fee – that means to me its a paid service paid in advance .
Responsible recycling is good for the earth – certainly wouldn’t bitch about any of it . The only bitch I guess is having to pay the fee and then having also to drive to bumfuck Dartmouth to drop it off . With all the money they are collecting off this , certainly they have the resource now to curb side collect electronics .
On an off note . I was doing a contract in Ottawa for a few months . I lived in a town east of Ottawa called Rockland . If you were over 4 bags of garbage – you had to go to town hall and pick up red stickers you paid a dollar for . These you had to stick on your extra garbage bags in order for them to be collected . No red sticker – No picky up garbage .
Explain again how it makes you “feel better” to ‘recycle” your electronics every time you update them, lol….and how exactly does it “help the earth” to keep buying all this shit, just because you pay the local gov’t money they can use to put up statues of cops and have private underground parking, while all your shit goes to the same dump anyway?
“‘A target gets a hole in it…the printer fragments into pieces !”‘
Yeah, years back my bud found a box of old 12 guage buck shot (now banned) his dad wanted rid of, so we piled a bunch of old B&W console TV’s, record players, a toaster and even an old porcelain shitter into my old Volvo, along with his shotgun, and headed back to this old abandoned car dump where we used to hang out as kids…
You’re right, it’s fun to blast at appliances! Those TV’s went great, especially one where we took the tube out and laid it on its back…that thing flew 100 feet high…boom!
The biggest lesson I learned though, was shooting at some old cars. You know how on TV the bad guy always takes shelter behind his car door and can’t get shot?
Uh-uh.
That buck shot went in one side of a car, and right out through the other…
😉
Had some newer shells too…I still have somewhere ,my old turntable with a 12 guage slug in it…it never went through ‘;cause it flew off the stereo and through the air…
“Explain again how it makes you “feel better” to ‘recycle” your electronics every time you update them”
Maybe it’s like when you go out to eat and you’re stuffed, but there’s half a chicken finger and 4 fries left on your plate. You don’t want them, but it’s a perfectly good half chicken finger and 4 fries…it seems like such a shame to just throw them out 😛
well Miles…maybe they should start stocking free targets at the recycle places.
I go turn in a few of my electronic ‘targets’ & i’ll get some paper ones to shoot.
They get electronics for recycling or reuse for free
I get free targets…which is what i consider something that is now useless to me, unless its burnable of course, & then its into the trashburner woodstove in the barn, for those lovely free BTU’s…you would be shocked at how long a tire cut into 4 pieces will burn ! (my stoves only big enough to get about 1/4 of a tire into it at a time…but when i do get one of those outdoor furnace units (they look like a baby barn) that takes 4 foot logs . I’m going to be in heaven & there won’t be no more tires building up around here ~;p
Umm did anyone else notice the tag? Sign me up for some teabagging!
Open wide 😮
teabaggin from Balls. How appropriate!
ah PK… you’ve sparked the good ol’ memories of Wallyworld…
only I’m talking the waterpark that used to be in London ON.
good times and many a boner in the hot-tub to be had there…..
Hot tubz kill sperm, zZz.
True story.
I’ve heard the same about nude photographs of Rosie O’Donnell…
