  1. “get a new job?” Umm, doing what, exactly? Usually, retail workers fall into two categories: young people going to school until they can get a decent paying job, or those who don’t have the qualificaitons to get a decent paying job. In either of these cases, the alternate choices are really limited- maybe as a waiter, or at a call centre. No matter what, they’re still stuck being on the receiving end of the inconsiderate public. Nobody goes into retail for a career choice.

I remember some of the outrageous crap people used to try to pull back when I did retail. I was never so glad to get out of that kind of work. Retail clerks can be some of the most underappreciated workers out there. At least in the top five.

  2. What do you mean “That’s women for you,” JK? I worked as a salesclerk more than once going through university and there were just as many males that had that ridiculous attitude.

  3. Holy fuck, get a new fucking job then, OP. Maybe the reason you’re stuck in retail is because too incompetent to even write with punctuation and any sentence structure. I worked as a dishwasher for six months, right through the summer in 25+ degrees heat. Let me tell you it’s no fucking picnic. Quit your whining and show some self control.

  4. Hate to bust your bubble there ghost, but people are in retail for more than just those two reasons. Some retail sales jobs are actually a good job choice (they pay phenomenally well) and there are well educated individuals that are stuck in retail because the Boomers won’t give up those “decent paying jobs”.

  5. Okay, so retail has changed in the last twenty years? Good. When I did it, it was only minimum wage and the only ones who made any money were the managers. But, I still think they have to put up with too much shit from demanding customers for the amount of money they make. What do you consider “phenomenally well”? $9? $10 an hour? I can’t imagine there are many retail jobs that pay more than that before commission. That’s well below poverty level.

Yes, I know there are clerks who treat the customers just as bad, but I think the balance is more toward shitty customers. The stuff people try to pull is unlimited and unbelievable.

Oh, and in case you’re lumping me in with those “Boomers” that won’t give up their jobs, I’m not one of them. I still have a minimum of twenty years to go before I hit retirement age. I’m working solely because I have to. Nobody’s waiting in line for my job.

  6. Oh yeah-
I also used the term “usually” when describing the reasons people are in retail. I didn’t say they were the sole two reasons. That’s just simply the majority.

  7. I’d say they aren’t the majority actually. It’s clearly been 20 years since you’ve step foot in a retailer. The majority of decent retail jobs (these are the jobs that are populated by the educated individuals that you mentioned) have some component of sales, and if they do, they pay commission, so if you do your job, you get paid well. The only exception would be maybe discount retailers like Wal-Mart and Zellers, which are the jobs populated by people who can’t find anything better. Back to the point of the OP’s though, people are indeed devious and it only makes things worse.

  8. You have to realize, though, that for every one customer who is bad, there are a hundred or more good ones. I work in retail and sure, you get some people who bitch you out and stuff, but that’s people for you. If you let it get to you this much, then retail isn’t for you.

  9. ‘Get a new job’ is certainly the easy answer but I haven’t really seen many viable student opportunities available outside the retail/call centre/restaurant bubble.

I remember when I was in university, all my jobs were shite. Has anyone had a decent one? Perhaps recommendations can prevent this bitcher from posting eight thousand retail bitches a year and we can get some new material.

  10. I worked for Capital Health while in college (and still do casually) and I can say that while there are poilitics, and the public, there are some decent jobs. You have to get up stupidly early mostly, and it can be hard to get in, but the pay makes up for it. You can get away with working half the time of a normal job and make the same amount of money. One of the downsides, you can easily get stuck here forever if you can’t get a job in your field after school ends.

  11. The best way to take a swipe at an evil customer is to smile and be sappy sweet. “It’s been a real pleasure doing business with you today! Thank you and come again!” Said in a calm voice and a nice tone, it will surely piss the snarkbag off good! I know because it’s one of my tactics, and it works! Once the customer is gone, you can laugh your ass off and not get into trouble.
