Do you think a certain chicken franchise is wrong in refusing delivery in Uniacke Square?

This should stir the shit….

  1. Depends. If they have records showing a history of or increase in being: attacked, ripped off or robbed. Then I say fuck the square or any other community that does the same. I wouldn’t be sending my employees to an area that puts them in danger or costs me more money than I bring in.

  2. I think it should be at the discretion of the delivery driver. Not just the square, but in any area that they do not feel comfortable going into I don’t think they should have to.

  3. I agree with Marly, I wouldn’t go in there knowing the recent history of the area. The best thing they could do there is put the rent up..a lot, so the low life types can’t afford to live there. They should tear down all the known crack houses and get the red berets in there to fuck up the drug trade. It’s obvious the cops don’t want to tackle it, it’s been like that for years . KFC is right on this one

  4. Unfortunately if you try to drive out the “low lifes” by hitting them economically you will also force out all the decent, moral and hard-working families that live in that area. But I agree it seems like the police are not doing much to address the issue of increasing violence in the city.

  5. What a load of shit- Uniacke Square is no worse than Fairview or Spryfield and the only reason its stigmatized is because is poor and/or predominantly black- apparently it makes all the yuppies nervous and it always has. I’d rather walk through Uniake Square at night than some dark tree-lined street in the South End- do you remember William Shrubsall? Tower Rd? Brad, where do you suggest the “low-lifes” go? Really, what are you implying? Shame on the chicken place and all you people who are unable to see how your own stereotypes have clouded your judgement. Uniacke Square- and the entire North End has been on the receiving end of this shit for far too long- I remember this as a kid! Get over it! Its no worse than any other area in Halifax and if there happens to be an upswing in crime, ask yourselves why? All I know, is that area has done nothing to deserve the reputation it has!

  6. Please remember it wasn’t KFC that refused to do the delivery it was the courier company that is sub contracted out by KFC.

  7. Holy shit, you people…the ignorance!! Funny, all of the friends I have who’ve ever been jumped or mugged have had it happen in the SOUTH end, not Uniake Square! The only trouble I’ve ever been in myself, a swarming when I was 15, happened on Quinpool rd, and was perpetrated by a gang of whites. I lived on the corner of Creighton and Cornwallis for 2 years and always felt safe walking home from the bars when I lived there, as opposed to when I lived near fucking Phi Kappa Pi!!

  8. Just because the newspapers and radio don’t make couriers getting robbed on a regular basis a front page story. It happens. And having previously worked for a courier company in HRM, those areas; Uniacke, Jellybean etc, have a high frequency of robberies, grab and dash etc. The courier companies refuse to send someone where there is a history of violence, especially if it previously happened to their own workers. The courier company in question had 2 previous robberies against its drivers in that area. Would you send your employees back there?FUUUUCK NO. Would you want to go back there if YOU got robbed? Would you like to go somewhere your friend got robbed? This isn’t stereo-nothing, just a matter of safety and common sense. Get your facts in check before crying discrimination people.

  9. ehh, colour doesn’t come into it, if the delivery people feel it isn’t safe, then I agree. with the colour mention, white or black, blue whatever, the area has a bad mojo, so they have the right to decline.

  10. I’m implying that there’s a history there of violence, robbery and drug dealing, a pretty common fact in that area. It’s fuckin’ common knowledge in HRM that these areas are frequented by drug dealers and the junkies that need them, and alas, crime to support habits. Why did YOU assume I was referring to the black population? I don’t give a shit what colour they are, an asshole is an asshole, and I wouldn’t send my employees in there knowing that there’s a better than average chance of them being robbed, or worse. What’s with the “yuppie” comment, bit of a fucking hypocrit too aren’t you? I’m saying, by raising the rent, maybe some of the assholes will leave there, and getting rid of crack houses and the people that frequent them might help the area.

  11. Yeah lynn, i’m sure you’d rather walk through Uniacke Square at night than the south end. Haha, what a load of bullshit. Go ahead then..take a little stroll tonight and make sure you walk right by crack corner too. You think the square has done nothing to deserve a bad rap? You seem to have forgotten just a few months ago when a guy was stabbed to death right on the sidewalk of Gottingen..just accross from Uniacke. Have you ever checked out the Coast’s violent Halifax map? I’m not saying that the other areas mentioned in this thread aren’t bad either, but out of all of them, i’d have to say this one is by far the most intimidating. I live in the N/E, and I would never walk through that area at night, and neither would you so please stop talking out of your ass.

  12. Sorry Poop, I would walk in the North End at night, I have in the past whn my sister lived there and found that there were more people out at night, Gottingen was pretty busy and it was not badly lit. I also lived in the South End very close to a row of crack houses behind my place and 1 a block down. Despite the fact that you may think I am talking out of my ass, I can recall countless nights coming home in the South End and West End so unbelievably scared that I would run. I find nothing more terrifying than being (like I already said) alone on a dark, tree-lined, isolated street, all the homes with their lights off. Maybe as a woman, my idea of what is threatening is different than that of a delivery person but I have a close friend who lives in Uniacke Square and have visited many times. I am sick of how a few shitty situations in that area refuel the irrational fear in that area that has always been present. A few shitty situations in the West End (I saw a woman being raped on Chebucto near the rotary- and yes, I intervened with my mom) don’t seem to generate such stereotypes. I can’t help but wonder why!

  13. I find it more scary that the people who defend themselves can get into more trouble than the assailants. I used to live near Jellybean square when I decided to take self-defense classes after the tenth time being threatened to hand over my cigarettes. My instructors first answer to what I could do to protect myself better never left my mind. “Move, or get a nightstick.”

  14. Uh oh, Matt’s telling me to get my head out of my ass. He’s the authority on who’s got their head up their ass too.I’m not making it into a race thing, Matt, so relax. I’m just pointing out the fact that when something bad happens in Uniacke Square, it’s remembered. Yet I wonder how many people now avoid walking down Henry Street after that girl was brutally raped in someone’s backyard the summer of 2004.

  15. My friend was jumped on Quinpool Rd 3 years ago and had his wallet & cell phone stolen, as well as his nose broken. I also know a business owner from Quinpool whose shop was robbed several times, once by a crowbar-wielding scumbag who hit this poor man over the shoulder and broke his collarbone. Hmm, what else.. I was followed after getting off the bus at the bottom of the street, Leo was swarmed. Perhaps we should all avoid Quinpool Rd now.

  16. You could take any street in Halifax and at sometime something bad happened there, but it’s true when you look at the crime map the odds increase significantly the closer you get to the square. I have lived in the NE at various stages in my life and would walk past at any given hour. I have never been bothered but I count myself lucky in that respect. The issue isn’t racial…it’s economical, and it’s not fair because a lot of the people that live there are decent hard-working individuals that are living through the violence and crime that we are all arguing about. They have to raise their kids there because they have no other choice (it’s close to work and affordable) yet many people won’t even walk by there. It isn’t right and what makes it worse is that it is seconds away from HRM’s police headquarters, close enough for more foot patrols, but they would much rather patrol Spring Garden Road on foot…those pan handlers are such a threat to society(I am being sarcastic).

  17. Good place for the red hats to start isn’t it? New lights, and a big presence of both the red hats and people out walking would go a long way to making the assholes feel unwelcome. It’s a good location to live, it just needs to be cleaned up and some semblance of community in there to drive the idiots out of there.

  18. I have an IT firm in town and I wont do business there ( and a few other specific places) either. having a vehicle parked outside full of electronic test equipement and a briefcase or two seems too much of a provocation to affirmative action. the junk you got 20 bucks for costs me a thousand. okay, I’m green, university educated, non racist, and small business. refusing service is easy…it’s 129/hour plus taxes, up front and in cash. if you still want to pay market rate we can work it out but no, I dont take a tv in a box and no, i wont make a deal for work in the future.

  19. Everybody who has a job delivering should be entitled to do his or her job in safety. Remember, it’s the actions of one bad apple to cause the rest of them in the bag to go bad. Unfortunately, that’s how a neighbourhood gets branded.

  20. Regardless of how debatable the actual danger of delivery in uniacke Square is, the company in quesiton is perfectly at rights to decide where they do and do not offer delivery service. It’s their business.
