  1. Yeah yeah, it’s a travesty of democracy, we’re all meaningless pawns in the political game…*yawn*.Let’s get over the stupid sunday shopping deal as somehow being the end of democracy ok? If you want something to be concerned about then how about taking on corporate lobbies in Ottawa, environmental issues or foreign policy decisions, all of which have definite elements of the will of the fewer going against the will of the more. And FYI, all of the above are a helluva lot more important than shopping on sunday. Gad, will this never end…

  2. I can’t see the logic in picking and choosing when you will stand up for democracy, you either believe in it or you don’t.

  3. Yeah ok…so spend every waking moment fighting for this illusion of democracy instead of choosing important fights that actually matter. Effective time management right there.

  4. Don’t blame the court. Rodney MacDonald wanted to allow Sunday shopping, but he wanted the court to tell him to do it so that he would be ‘forced’ to go against the recent referendum. The Government could have responded to the creative method that Superstore and Sobeys was using to open their stores by passing a clear law (in keeping with the referendum) that stopped such Sunday openings. The court said as much in the decision. Instead government tweaked the old law in a way that they KNEW would get thrown out by the court, and used that as an excuse to get rid of the law all together.

  5. Now all they have to do is get rid of the ridiculous “noise” by-law 200. Demanding that people shut off their music, tv’s, quiet their guests, etc. at 7pm on Saturdays and holidays and ditto for 9:30 every other night of the week is beyond ridiculous. Anywhere else in North America is reasonable at an 11pm cut-off. This is typical of N.S.village mentality and geriatric appeasement. No wonder the younger ppl can’t wait to get the hell out of this backwards place.

  6. I’m with “J” on this one. The law was purposely poorley written so that it would be scrapped. Discriminatory laws are quickly thrown out and what could be better than to blame it on the justice system rather than the government who wrote the law. If Rodney Macdonald respected democracy he would have had the law re-written CORRECTLY. Truth is it was an easy way out so our economy could benefit. This is another example where people’s general happiness is sacrificed at the hands of the political policy which is our economy. Do you want to work on Sunday? I certainly don’t. Why should others have to when it was obvious that the majority wanted Sundays off, regardless of who can be more vocal. Now, I can understand where “sonofapreacherman” is coming from. If we can get riled up on this issue, why can’t we do it for something more important? Nova Scotia recently had a small hope of providing some healthy competition for NSP with another company wanting to provide energy from wind turbines. This was rejected by the energy minister because he said “what if the wind stops blowing.” This statement is far to ignorant for an energy minister to be making. We have one of two problems: either we have the wrong goverment in power because of a complete lack of foresight, or we have a crooked goverment who is more interested in pocketing cash from a large company than looking after it’s citizens.

  7. call me cynical, but i really don’t think we have a “crooked” gmt, but just a typical gmt. the bottom line is money, and it always will be. it will never matter which group is in power – it is just best to vote for the group that has policies that best siut your needs to which you want to support. there will always be good with the bad, i do think we need to voice our opinions on those ideas/policies that we don’t agree with and we need to do it regularly. i think when we had that referemdum that the gmt never really beieved the vote would be “no” for SShopping, but it was. And for a large portion of all of us people – we natually assumed that everyone was going to vote appropriately – “Yes” so why be bothered to get up off the couch ourselves to vote. Only to realized (too Late)that everyone else decided to sit on their asses, we freaked! and there is where the gmt saw that there was an opportunity to get this over ruled…i honestly believe that had everyone voted, we would never had to go to court and this would not be such a hot topic to debate- and i think this is what the gmt thinks too.we will always have this SShopping – it is time to forget the past move on and start voicing our opinions about more important issues!

  8. You think you have more influence over foreign policy then you do a local issue.Lofty goals right there.

  9. yeah yeah get over sunday shopping. that isn’t the point of this bitch. the point is that our vote meant nothing. so how can they preach that it’s your civil duty to go out and vote, when they pull shit like this that makes us think our vote doesn’t matter? how can we put our voice into a larger political forum and expect the results we want when a small little local issue gets walked all over? the subject is irrelivant. its the fact that the vote meant nothing. its frustrating.

  10. I never believed the issue should have been voted on in the first place. People who are going to shop are going to shop and those who won’t will not; it’s as simple as that.Another thing worth pointing out is that just because the ban was lifted, it doesn’t mean the stores have to be open. If you and your co-workers are really against it, you should take that up with your manager. Two things might happen: 1) Your store will be closedor2) Your manager might hire a few Sunday workers.

  11. Boggles my mind how the first sunday they had shopping ppl came into my work (restaurant) and bitched about how wrong it is for ppl to have to work on sunday, right in front of me…some people just don’t get that the world is not going to end now that retail workers join ther rest of us min. wage minions. I’ve been working sundays all my life and it hasn’t hurt me, but at least i can get some shopping done on my way home

  12. Better to have so called lofty goals that actually matter than to have insignificant goals that don’t.Pick your battles based on something more than limited local discomfort at having to work through a football game.

  13. Gee…I forgot that sunday was the allocated family and loved ones time slot. Musta missed the memo from Stalin…..OK, well in that case, yes bring back the ban and let’s get to that scheduled luvin time!

  14. …has our government just set a new precedent of overiding legislature? …was that even legal, you or i could not do such a thing…last time i checked rodney was premier, not dictator.

  15. HAAHHAHAWhat do you think everyone else in the whole country does? Do you think EVERYONE’S lives are RUINED because of sunday shopping?I WISH EVERYONE WOULD GROW UP.Sunday shopping is not something to complain about. People will find a way to complain about ANYTHING, in someway. You complain about being allowed to shop on sundays? You seriously need to get your shit together and re-analyze everything. Think about how lucky you are that you dont have HIV, or that your country just got nuked or your miltary runs around raping your family.shaddddddup
