To the Woman who bought the house on Kane Place: Could you please call off your workers on weekends and evenings! You are not making any friends in the neighbourhood. We cannot enjoy our own homes with the sound of someone drilling through concrete reverberating through our homes EVERY NIGHT AND ALL WEEKEND LONG. Please restrict the workers to business hours Monday – Friday. It is the neighbourly thing to do. — Your New Neighbours

  1. Although you are entitled to your complaint, OB, your neighbors also exercise the right to create a cacophony of renovation related noises.

If their din is restricted to the hours dictated by local by-laws then the ‘neighborlyness’ that you seek is only being hampered by your inability to control your own emotions.

Your neighbors are attempting to create something beautiful through their renovation. Any noise created isn’t with malicious intent. The noise that you are creating, OB, is exactly the opposite of theirs.

  2. HUH? The Kane Place Konstruction People can work 7 days a week and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Who the hell are you to dictate the hours? Maybe some people are working on the weekends and have days off during the week …. should all activity stop then too?

You’re the one who is hammered.

  3. Someone aborted the timeline, Tim.
Quick, better ban some Bitchers for Life!

  4. woah, future trippin man…

construction sucks but it does come to an end. buy some earplugs.

  5. I wonder what I had for breakfast Tuesday? And if it’s within the noise bylaw hours OP, tough luck. If not, file a complaint.

  6. Bylaws are written so that you can have “peaceful enjoyment”, irrespective of hours. Call & complain.

  7. Ever consider said neighbour might be paying friends with trade skills to do this job on their nights & weekends, perhaps saving a ton of dough? We’ve done that ourselves when we first bought our pile.

Suck it up, OP, you live on peninsula Halifax, not a fucking gated community.

  8. I lived in a condo unit. But i rented the condo. The owner, when living there, was bound by condo law (that’s how it was written) but we, as tenants were NOT.

Obviously we had to adhere to basic law and order but the bright red curtains and star outside upset our neighbour so much, she went on a campaign to pick our lives apart.

and pick she did op, oh my. She was probably worse than you are. It got to the point where she would complain about “open flames” when we had a hibachi BBQ going in the summer.

Being the kind of person I am, I bought a beat-up pickup truck and parked’er outside the house. Slammed a couch on the front porch and blared Utah Phillips “You gotta mess with people” out the window all humanly hours.

Why am i telling this story op? Because like you i think my douchebaguette neighbour HONESTLY BELIEVED she was entitled to be upset at red curtains and a hibachi. I think she was HONESTLY just that self-centered.

My suggestion to you op is to go live in those condos. Those are the kind of people you should have for neighbours. You’ll be happier around clones than individual human beings.

  9. I’m not trying to be a dick. Noise is annoying.

    At four in the morning.

If you’re bitching and moaning about somebody doing work on a saturday afternoon, you have a bit of a control issue. Life sometimes doesn’t work out exactly the way you want it to. Sometimes there are noises, odors or ugly people in your presence. Suck it up.

  10. How about a quick saunter down the street and have a friendly chat with the new neighbours? They might be sympathetic and bow to your wishes, failing that, tell them to expect a visit from Doug and Dinsdale Piranha.

  11. My best friend had to live with her elderly blind sister for 2 years fighting off a crazy-ass neighbour on Connaught Ave. who threw dog shit and broken glass in the yard, tore up the plants, punched and pushed the sister to the ground, slammed his fist into my friend’s chest – I saw the fucking fist print – this prick beat up his wife and daughter regularly but his good connections with the cops in this burg made him virtually untouchable. My friend was arrested twice for standing on his driveway and trespassing. The sister moved out West last fall after 25 years of this abuse. And you’re kvetching about a little hammering for a limited amount of time? Fuck off, OP.

  12. Oooo…upper class gossip. Someone’s going to be black-balled at the country club!

  13. Red curtains? You too Crayons? We had the same problem with our neighbours over our red curtains (with the hammer and sickle),they wouldn’t leave us alone. We ended up buying a 1992 Hyundai Pony, parked it out front and blared Barry Manilow out of a cheap stereo 24/7. True story! Pretty much.

  14. I have red and chocolate brown curtains on my patio door.I don’t understand whats so bad about having red curtains in your window? It’s not like they have red light bulbs on in their house which can be seen from the outside at night…Everyone knows that red light bulbs means it’s a whore house.

  15. So OP is basically saying…
Fuck any of my neighbors who work from home,
I just don’t want to be impacted.
Not only that but restricting their work hours would make the construction take even LONGER.
    Shove off you SOD.

  16. I’d say go talk to the owners and see what their plan is; Will the construction take a week? a month? 6 months?

Having dealt with a noise issue, I can tell you that there is no “make as much noise as you like till 11pm” bylaw in HRM.

I’d be annoyed if I was CONSTANTLY woken up by a racket, or unable to hear myself think on my back deck

OP has a right to enjoy their property and space, the line is deciding whats a reasonable amount of noise over length of time vs trying to understand and get along with the neighbors vs the owner who may not be living on site vs the contractor who just wants to get in and get done.

  17. be careful op. I should have mentioned this before. Is this your first purchased house?

You’re not renting. You have to live with these people a damn long time unless you’re some sort of house flipper.

Don’t burn bridges the day you move in. Nobody will like you and then noise will be the least of your worries. Flaming bags of dogshit will be more the fare to come.

  18. It’s not make as much noise as you like…
but construction noise falls under schedule A for allowable times.

  19. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

OB, you need to put your big girl/boy pants on and suck up the fact that you can’t always have things your way. Just because you live on Kane Place, doesn’t mean you’re special. We all have to deal with crap we don’t want to no matter where we live and as long as they’re adhering to the by laws set in place by the jurisdiction we live in, there’s nothing we can do about it.

So suck it up with your golden arse.

  20. Oh and FYI: if someone’s making improvements to their home that will up the value of their place, it means the value of YOUR place is going to go up too. So you should be happy your new neighbour is attempting to make improvements and care for their new house.

  21. Ob, tell your neighbor that you would be happy to start your lawn mower at 7am every day for a month to explain to her the difference between legal and courteous.

  22. Eh, workin’ folk are often up by 7am most days (those who do the 9-5 thing), so chances are that won’t be a big deal. As for weekends… you can always go back to sleep after the mower is off. And hay, it’s probably as shitty for the OB to get up TO turn his mower on on the weekends that he probably wouldn’t bother. Plus, she’s doing her work on weekends, which generates noise (because HELLO, the bitch is complaining about noise) so, I don’t see why that’d bother her all that much.

And the neighbour could also be a heavy sleeper. I can sleep through anything, so if the neighbour’s like me, a 7am mower won’t really affect her that much.

  23. Geez.

Its not about getting one up on someone, its about the OP understanding that stuff needs to get done and the home owner having some consideration for people who do work regular work hours and want to relax on the weekend.
Its a long road and being rude or inconsiderate on either side will catch up eventually.

So share your fuckin smarties 🙂
