Dude, plain and simple…DEATH is BAD for BUSINESS! The govt. doesn’t want you to have the option to die with some dignity, they want to milk you (and your family) dry before you wither away. Call up the MS Society and inquire what their net profits were last year. It’s like Cancer (both figuratively and literally), the Govt. and BIG business don’t want to find the cure to cancer…some fat CEO prick would be out of a job, an $800,000+ per year job and the Govt. would be out millions in taxes and revenue. The whole “Moral Issue” thing is a facade for a much more debauched agenda.
For the record, should I get an afflection that will slowly kill me from the inside, I think I will just do something that will get me shot by the cops. Maybe go on a wild sword weilding spree in the mall. Then the Conservatives won’t have anything to bitch about when I put my family out of their misery. Just imagine, going down in a hail of bullets.I apologize in advance to the cops that will have to shot me.

James: Buy a clue buddy. The MS society is not the government, it is NON-PROFIT organization. That means that they don’t have profits, large or otherwise. Also: we (thankfully) have socialized medicine in this country. That means that everybody gets most of their health care paid for, and people who are terminally ill cost the government an enormous amount of money to prolong their lives. Far, far more than they pay in taxes. For one, I’m happy to help pay for it. It’s asinine to suggest that the government is keeping sick people around to get their tax dollars.
rj – Many non-profit groups pay their CEO or board members right out of the fund they receive as donations. Non-profit does not mean they don’t rake in the cash in certain cases. There has been many cases in the news over the past couple of years about non-profit groups who only put 10% of the funds raised towards the actual cause, the rest paid for operations, including wages.
rj, Govt. run or not(so called) the MS Society rakes in millions per year. Non-profit??? It is a business!!! If they didn’t make a profit they wouldn’t exist!!! Come out of your box man…you mention things like socialized medicine and taxes. Well buddy, a year’s supply of Interferon will run a person about $35,000+, that’s out of their own pocket, no socialized medicine there. That is almost (sorry I don;t have the exact figure) 90% profit buddy, please keep telling me about how the Govt. and big business are not teamed up to make major $$$.
A family member of mine had a terminal illness and the treatment/nursing home costs cost my family approximately $3000 a month. The government/insurance paid for about $2000 of that. Just because we have socialized medicine doesn’t mean that having a family member with an illness can’t financially cripple a family. That being said, I don’t think the Cancer society of Canada or the MS Society of Canada are in some kind of evil plot with the Gov. of canada and big business to make us all sick.
I know you shouldn’t argue with conspiracy theorists, but here goes: It is simply not true that the MS Society is a profit making business, you could argue that they compensate some of their employees too well, and that to high a percentage of their funds go to administration, but that’s not the same thing as making a profit. Governments don’t make money from sick people either, even if not all drugs are paid for by the government, terminally ill people are a drain on government funds, not a cash cow. I’ll grant you that drug companies make money on sick people, more than they should be allowed to, but it’s more than a bit far-fetched to suggest that big pharma is running the government and keeping assisted suicide illegal. There is a real and important debate to be had about assisted suicide, but I really don’t have much time for involving the Illuminati and tin foil hats in it.
