Thank you Community Services! Because of your paltry, meagre stinginess, my friend is now homeless. If you can find a place to live nearby healthcare services (he’s disabled), for less than the $535 per month you offer, I’ll eat your shit, publicly! You think that people’s lives are expendable! —Homelessness is a Greater Social Burden than Extra Funds

  1. Depending on the disability…. but there is a bus route, it may not be the most convient means of getting around but it is better then nothing or being homeless.
I know the HerringCove Road has cheaper apartments. Maybe even a few places in fairview. Sorry your friend is having hard times

  2. The busses that go through Fairview aren’t ALF routes, hardduke. 🙁 It’s sick! Either the 4 or the 2 should be an ALF route. None of the express busses are ALF, and neither is the 21. The 52 is, but it only brushes through FV.

  3. same with the 60 Kitty. At least, not in the mornings, anyway. Sometimes they put an ALF bus on in the route in the afternoon but officially, the #60 is not an ALF route. I often see people with disabilities or mobility issues or some elderly people struggle to get onto that bus. In this day and age, there shouldn’t be any excuse for that. It’s PUBLIC transportation.

  4. OP, he/she doesn’t have to rent an apartment or a whole house. …why don’t they just rent a room? Why do poor people think they should be entitled to larger living conditions when all they have to pay is $535 (or less).

  5. Wow, I kind of agree with Sebastion. I even pinched myself to see if I was dreaming. Depending on the disability, just renting a room might not be enough for this person though…. then again, why should tax payers have to put this person up in an apartment? Do they not have family or friends that can help them out? Are they entirely incapable of working? If they were, they’d probably be getting more than $500 a month from the government.

(And by the way OB, Community Services isn’t trying to be stingy. There have been a lot of budget cuts and there’s only so much money to go around. If your friend were to get $1,000 a month, someone else might go without).

  6. And shame on you, OB, for letting your so-called friend go homeless. Maybe you could try doing something instead of posting about it on the internet.

  7. There are some cheaper apartments in Spryfield, and a brand new health centre in South Centre mall. The 14 is accessible for most of the route. If he can find a roommate, I bet he could find something affordable in the North End, where they have a great community health centre and the 7 and the 3 are accessible. It’s not likely your friend will be able to find a super nice apartment near the hospital for $535 a month, but there are places in the city that aren’t horrible and are on accessible bus routes.

  8. ah, social disservices, you gotta love to hate them. they don’t give two fucks and a whistlestone about anyone but themselves, and maybe a friend or two. this has to be one of the most corrupt fucking places in the world. any and all of them. n.s. is noted for their lack of empathy in that sector. and children’s aid is the next biggest fuck up.

  9. Social Assistance is not in place to pay for all living costs….it is there do do exactly what it says Assist you…help you out, but you have to be willing to help yourself.

Sometimes I wonder if having social assistance program doesn’t promote lazyness amoung people. I realize it helps ALOT of people. But I also know a few that completely take advantage….why work when you can draw Social Assistance.
