I love the skating oval, it’s really brought haligonians together in a way that doesn’t usually happen, but the whole plot looks like a tent city. Surely, when they were grading the earth for 4 months, someone would have thought about how it looked from the outside? It looks like the protest trailers at Africville. And those dead xmas trees and shit woven into the fence don’t help at all. —Don’t mind if it’s permanent, just make it not ugly

Ha! I noticed that too.
I have kind of an “in” on th whole design and whatnot. The tacky trailers and tacky chainlink fence were only meant for a temporary use. HRM is funding it so you can guess where the lack of quality comes from.
I really hope that my company gets the job if they make it permanent as I would like to get my hands on the chance to make my commons not as ugly as sin.
I did just see the warming tent for the first time today and thoght that looked pretty badass, I wish they have chosen a theme or at least decorated the trailers.
Don’t forget the mud at the entrance that gets tracked in. They should really put a proper sidewalk (temporary if that) leading into the oval.
like anything else, somethings are always bound to mar an otherwise nice thing. and yes, those trees are there to help control breezes, and gawkers i believe.
I’ve been thinking that the oval would have been more entertaining if it was a figure ‘8’. THat you have to skate on it as fast as possible & there were bleachers at the intersection of the ‘8’ … so nonskaters could enjoy the crashes ~:)

A change from the usual more hockey-oriented rink design, it is all about rec skating around a figure-8 loop that’s 250m long. It is made with artificial ice for ease of maintenance and a lighting and sound system is integrated amongst a natural park setting full of trees.

This looks like one of the trail skates in To. that I was reading about a few weeks ago. I would rather support smaller trail-based skating located throughout the various communities that comprise the lovely HRM, instead of just one community benefitting from an oval. As it is, anyone from other communites in HRM who want to skate must commute to get to Halifax’s oval. It makes more sense to reduce the commuting carbon emissions by constructing skating facilities in each community. The trails already exist. Ice and snow render them difficult for walking. Making them user-friendly in the winter months just makes sense.
I could never move back to Toronto big-smoke-sis, not since Metamorphysis, Osmosis, Chili’s, Claytons, Katrina’s and The Gasworks all bit the dust:P The remaining Courage My Love, Kim Moon and Roach-a-Rama sure make for nice visiting though:)
We’ll they got students at NSCAD to make the warming hut. And I thought the stuff on the fence was part of an outdoors arts and crafts program set up for the little kids… Supporting local art and children… Yeah they aren’t trying at all.
Considering the funding it’s had and the fact that the current set up is temporary, I’d say they did a pretty good job.
Oh, and all the entrances are already on sidewalks… The mud you’re talking about was there before the oval was from people walking across the commons.
