  1. Community College is very similar to Jr High, but with slightly higher expectations and a varied age range.

  2. meh, you’ll probably be one of the 25% who don’t make it past 1st year..because you’ll spend all your time partying and looking at young hot beav, and then you’ll wind up with a 10 year bartending job downtown..unknowingly one step away from the guy outside bumming change..enjoy!

  3. If you have a shred of dedication and know how to use a library, then you’ll probably get a degree. If that degree is in something that’s only useful with two more degrees on top of it, please don’t come back in four years whining that you can’t find a decent job.

  4. What are you supposed to expect? Depends who are you. Are you a nerd? Expect good grades but no poon. Jock? Shitty grades but lots of poon. That’s the basic way it’s broken down.

  5. Shouldn’t you have had some inkling of what you wanted to do BEFORE filling out the application and handing over that tuition payment?

  6. OK, that was a bit flippant of me—no caffeine yet.

Look, OP, you’ve got a really good opportunity to do something really cool.

I hope you have chosen a program that really suits your interests.

Pay attention, work hard, meet people, take advantage of activities and resources on your campus.

We had some good rants about all this (Trades vs Uni) last week under “Cheap Ass Employers” and also “Tips are the Shits.” Take a look, you’ll see some good advice from all sides.

Just remember that College isn’t high school. The onus is entirely on you, the paying student, to do what you need to do to excel.

In academic courses, the REAL work is what you read, review, study, write and prepare OUTSIDE of class/lecture time—lectures are only meant to “highlight” some of the key points.

In hands-on labs, you have to make the effort to contribute to the team and to show up with prepared to improve your skills.

And if you feel lost, which you probably will at some point, ASK someone for advice. Many of the students will be in the same boat as you, and the instructors have all been there.

Good luck, and I hope you find your way to a rewarding college experience and a satisfying career.

  7. more sleep = better grades… where sleep approaches an asymptote of about 12.
You’ll need the rest of your time eating, actually attending class, and doing work assigned on your own time.

Truly, from year 1-5 I slept more every semester and every semester my gpa rose.
I weaned off the drinking a bit and took more of a smoke approach to get through the last couple years… more sleep and no hangover to slow me down.
not recommending (as it’s expensive) but worked for me.

  8. Ahh come on people. It was just the other day that Bill Estabrooks and the NDP were saying that they want to attract more stduents to NS because there were a ton of jobs..

  9. yep, plenty of call center and McJobs everywhere…
please people, FLOCK HERE TO FLIP MY BURGERS AND LISTEN TO MY COMPLAINTS!

  10. yep ya’ll made it to the big time learn’n derby; time for some serious thinkafying and a shiny apple for the derby master never hurts i reckon yep:)
