I being the coffee lover that I am frequent coffee shops pretty much on a day to day basis and have noticed something lately that irks me- perhaps it shouldn’t but it does, more and more people are using coffee shops but not purchasing anything – I think this is just absolutely rude but I also hold the staff responsible for not monitoring and pushing back on this – for example last week I was in this small coffee shop and three girls came in, pushed the last two available tables together, set up their laptops and in the remaining time that I was there, approximately 40 minutes, they did not approach the counter to purchase anything. In that same amount of time I counted 16 people enter the shop—out of those, seven were obviously hoping to purchase and stay but due to no seating they left without buying anything. Honestly people, have some common sense – would you walk into a fine dining establishment and do the same thing? — Perked off

  1. Why would you buy a $2 cup of coffee then you can make it (the same brand) for pennies?

  2. Shouldn’t I be reading this tomorrow?

    Freaky beaky……

It’s up to the manager or owner to kick their non-purchasing little keisters to the curb. You might want to drop a hint to whoever’s in charge.

  3. Or they buy a coffee and stay the whole day. Management has to get the guts and move these people out.

  4. I’m with you guys, and OP, on this one…on a different note, I really enjoyed the Coast’s featured article this week:) Also, Brooklyn Bickie makes me LMAO:D

Hope you all had a good Monday–T-minus 4 days until the weekend returns!

  5. “Why would you buy a $2 cup of coffee then you can make it (the same brand) for pennies?”

The time it takes for coffee grinding, preparation and cleanup (say 15 minutes) is far more valuable than the $2 it costs to buy a coffee at a cafe. Unless you make minimum wage, making coffee yourself, when you’re constrained for time, is not an optimal use of time.

  6. I’ll pay the $2-$4 for a specialty coffee rather than my usual make it myself at home, when I’m in the mood to people watch.

  7. I can’t make a coffee as good as I get at Tims. As for the bitch, let management know your concerns.

  8. good grief, 15 minutes to make a cup of coffee? 30 seconds to grind. 2 minutes tops to brew. add cream, sugar. drink.

reg, timmies comes in cans, bags even pods. no idling in the drive thru, you can have it anytime you want, saves a bunch. money left over to buy pool equipment

  9. I have pre-ground coffee. The one-cup brewer I my office takes less than 3 minutes to run the water through.

I then sit at my desk by my computer with large screen and high-speed internet, look out my window at the minions below and laugh all the way to the bank.

Goin’ to MontrĂ©al for a shopping trip at the end of the month and then off to Europe in October… so far…

  10. I love the useless analogy that no coffee out=more of (vacation/Xbox/something else valuable). You know money can be spent on multiple things, right? You save on coffee, I save on something else I think is useless that you think is valuable. Result: we both go on vacation!

BTW: I’ve been to Europe, Toronto, Montreal and multiple camping trips all in the last year, all while buying coffee out. I still managed to save 15% of my take-home income.

Anyway, I’m glad you’re all so good at making coffee. Congratulations 🙂

  11. Also, I don’t drink that coffee because I don’t like sugar-cream blended with shitty coffee. I also commute by bicycle in the early morning so no line-ups and no idling. The point is that it is not always an optimal use of time to make coffee at home, especially if the time cost of buying out is low and you earn a high wage.

  12. And *gasp* some people just like to go out and have a coffee and socialize, which is okay as long as they’re not there for hours upon hours.

  13. well, I guess if every minute of your day is on the clock, then yeah, if you lose out on $10 because you spent 15 minutes dawdling over making a cup of coffee then yeah, it makes economic sense to buy it made for you. but I don’t charge myself for my off work time. ( I couldn’t afford me, only rich buggers like my boss can)

to each his own. I spend an indecent amount of money on sheets.

  14. I don’t idle in the drive-thru Molly. I walk in so I can impress the girls with my witty banter and chiselled physique.
I’ve tried brewing my own Tims but it’s never the same. Maybe it’s all psychological because the coffees people pick up for me taste even better than the ones I pick up.
I’ve got a hot lead on that piece of pool equipment, just a few miles outside of Halifax.

  15. reg, you mean you didn’t want to try my mcgyver solution? tsk. a lot of head scratching went into that.
I figured I ‘had’ you on the drive-thru. pfft.
I am a baaaad girl, I bought one of those fancy schmancy single cup makers and now guzzling frappaccino’s at my desk all day.
