Because the Coast needs ad revenue to stay publishing, they choose to display ads from companies willing to pay, which includes cigarettes and *GASP* alcohol(funny how you didn’t mention that one). And since this is an adult oriented publication, we’re all pretty mature enough to know the consequences of dumping chemicals into ourselves.
So shut up and put up, unless you want to start paying for it or buy the ad space yourself. And no, I don’t smoke, I think it’s a filthy habit, but I love me some liquor, and my free newspaper.
Yeah totally illegal. The editors should be thrown in jail. They’re corrupting our innocent children.
We should ban all the bar and alcohol advertisements as well, we don’t want to give our children the wrong impression. While we’re at it, let’s ban all fast food restaurants from advertising. Childhood obesity is NOT a joke.
But what about those racy lingerie advertisements? Let’s ban those too. Teenage pregnancy is on the rise, and it’s all because of the over-sexualization of the media that our children are being exposed to.
Yeah, the companies involved here are totally irresponsible, completely acting illegally and ethically bankrupt. I’m disappointed too. I don’t believe in individual responsibility, I’ll just keep pointing fingers at others to justify my morals and self righteousness.
there was a discussion about this topic a few days back. many peoples opinions are printed there.
Unless you’re this easily swayed by a blinking ad, I recommend going back to asking your conscience what decisions you’re willing to make. You can view anything you want, but in the end its YOUR decision to use that knowledge. I just viewed an ad for ‘the haunting in connecticut’. Does that mean I’m going to be soooo tempted and go out in see it anyways? NO. I hate horror films.
Honestly, illegal? It’s not irresponsible either. The Coast is allowed to advertise what they want and how they want. If it offends you that much, stop reading the publication.
Hey may as well get rid of Dan Savage too. And censor all the fucking bad words in the Coast also.
Man I’m glad there are people out there to save us from ourselves.
Oh my fuck, get a goddamn life, OP – if this is the bane of your existence, then you should be kicked in the arse with a steel-toed boot.
Please do pull that giant pole out of your rectum.
I understand it’s long and pointy but no need to jump off the deep end here. It’s an ad FFS.
They have to pay the bills SMOKE somehow OP. While cigarettes are not exactly SMOKE what most people would want, they keep this paper, and LTWWB free in its own SMOKE little way. Besides, full page ads are SMOKE easier to avoid than some more discreet forms of SMOKE advertising.

Yeah, its lame, but I don’t see Supersobeys taking out full page ads anytime soon.
“YOU’RE NOT THE ONLY ONE SMOKING THIS CIGARETTE”
The current B&H ad is very reassuring. I hope my little brother sees this ad as he peruses the “Best of Music” (He is an aspiring Rock Star).
How ’bout: ‘YOU’RE NOT THE ONLY ONE INHALING THESE TRAFFIC FUMES’?
What a bunch of irrelevant responses. The fact of the matter is that tobbacco companys and media groups are not allowed to print advertisments featuring cigaretts (a controlled substance ) in canada. You are all defending this because why? you like advertisements for cigarettes to be veiwed by impressionable teens ( who by the way read the coast as often as adults. )
If the coast wants to pay the bills this way thats fine, but then they should stop writing articles about bad policys at metro transit and other companys untill they look at their own policys. Also by paying the bills featuring a cigarette advertisment they may end up pissing of the Broad Cast standards council and other organizations which are capible of leving heavy dutie fines (wich could bankrupt this small weekly newspaper I have come to enjoy)
Most of my friends who are aware of the cigarette advertising think it is foolish of the coast. I agree. You may not, but please, make a valid argument, maybe about advertising laws or media responsiblity and not about booze or traffic fumes, its embarassing to read.

Read.
Rafiki, I think if you check out Cranky’s link, the Coast might fall into the allowable advertising category because it’s readership is over 85% adult. I’m sure the Coast’s lawyer(s) know the legality of what they are doing. I hope.
Nah, people who publish stuff for over 15 years and sell ad space to national corporations probably run things pretty max-relax.
i <3 it! keep up the good work coast
