We recently moved to Halifax from a major urban Canadian city and were delighted that our building complex has a designated off-leash dog park: so welcoming and convenient!

The park even has a “doggy bag” dispenser that generous neighbors (including myself, and who I take to be a building superintendent) fill with waste bags. The park features several friendly reminders to pick up after pets.

But wouldn’t you know it? Just about NO ONE cleans up after their dog.

Rarely is there more than one dog/owner in the park at a time, and so opportunities to leave dog dump without reprimand are rampant.

WHAT IS THE DEAL HERE, GUYS?

In the city I am from, it is near impossible to find a dog-friendly park, and to live in a complex that designates space specifically for off-leash dogs is unimaginable. I am so grateful for this space but stunned that no one else seems interested to treat it with the lowest modicum of respect.

Is this a Halifax thing? Do people here think leaving dog sh*t around is appropriate and acceptable? Should I conduct a sting operation? — Dog Lover, Sh*t Hater

  1. I vote for the sting operation, get em’ while its still steaming! Or just start shitting in the hallways, I like both ideas now.

  2. Yeah I seen a couple dog shit sting ops on youtube, they usually end with someone getting shit flung on them.

People need to get over the dog shit issue a while…turds are biodegradable and good fertilizer for the plants.

  3. no_fool. How are they good for the plants if the shit’s not even near one? They’re certainly not biodegradable when it’s on the bottom of your footwear. How can you even go for a leisurely stroll when you have to hop-scotch around these land mines?

  4. A dead elephant is biodegradable no_fool. You wouldn’t want to leave that carcass lying around.

  5. With the amount of Dog Crap bitches on here we must soon be the Dog Shit Capital of Canada, not sure what that would look like on a T Shirt or Beer Mug but there might be some tourist dollars there somewhere. There must be a way to use the crap as a fuel supply.

  6. I agree that dog droppings can be a problem but its not a Halifax thing.. dog owners all over don’t pick up after their dogs. I wouldn’t suggest asking a stranger to pick up after their dog unless you want a verbal or possibly physical altercation. I think the bast thing to do is clean up after your dog and leave other dog owners alone. Its not a surprise to me that people are taking advantage of a great space.. taking advantage of things is what most people do to everything.

  7. good one s and w, there’s a market for everything and miss is correct. halifax has a lot of dogs considering its size but dog shit be everywhere, don’t go to big cities in india if feces bothers you

  8. major

i guess it belabours the point but wouldn’t most cities be somewhat urban?
