There is an individual who gets on the #20 bus every day who is either drunk or loud, or a combination of both. Why do certain people believe that everyone else on the bus wants to hear their personal business? It is apparent no one on the bus wants to hear it from the looks on their faces. When you inform this individual politely they are talking too loudly/yelling and suggest perhaps they should lower their voice, they say mind your own business. My question is, how can you, when this person is yelling out her business to everyone on the bus? Whatever happened to civility and consideration for others on the bus? —Tired Bus Traveler

  1. Just going out on a limb here but, if this person is apparently drunk everyday, I don’t think civility and consideration are necessarily high on their priority list. I don’t know the circumstances of this person, but they’re obviously looking for some sort of attention, (good or bad), and what better place than on a bus full of people…can you say captive audience? If this person is beligerent and/or causing a disturbance, go talk to the bus driver. They can have the person removed if the complaint is valid. Ahhh Metro Transit…a freak show on wheels.

  2. the same thing can be said about those fucking tools, with the shitbox little farting cars, and syereos so loud, they drown out a jet engine at take off.
i certainly don’t want to share in your taste in shitty music, or what the fuck ever you have belching out of your woofers and thumpers.
on the contrary, i want to be able to hear the siren in back of me, letting me know to get the fuck over. and then we have some cabs, that do this too. you know there will be no tips coming their way.
yeah i get it that some people like their shit loud, but hey, not every fucking one wants to hear you coming 5 miles away.someday, someone, will get really pissed at you people, and i see road rage with bats and/or guns following.and if they are out after a certain time, do they trim it down, ohnos, they seem to crank it up all the more. bunch of deaf fucking morons.

  3. lol…I think I may have worked for him once before too. lol
PS, I realized after I posted the “For Fr Ivan” part that you may misconstrue it to mean that I was calling you an asshole…So not my intention. I’m glad you took it in the spirit in which it was intended. Sorry if I offended at all. Ooopsie! lol

Do you use a moisturizer and exfoliate?

  5. avast0 I tried asking the bus driver to do something, he just shrugged and did nothing. After this person got off the bus, I asked the driver why he did nothing, his reply “that behavior is to be expected on the 20”. I called the bus the “circus” because it is full of clowns. Hey, you have got to laugh at a situation that has no solution. Just thought I would see what others thought and make sure I was not crazy in asking this question.
Nice to see others get what I mean by the lack of civility on the bus and in society in general.

  6. Sucks,

I think people have the right to play their shit in their car that they pay for as loud as they please. They should be considerate but they are not required to. I usually lower my music when I’m at a stoplight, or if I’m driving past a family and there is cursing in that particular moment of the song. I’m sick of people bitching about this, I could turn my music down but I’d just be one less out of the hundreds that do it. We’re allowed. You want us to tip toe and whisper too?

I really don’t see how a little bit of music for a few seconds can ruin your day. Maybe you’re just an uptight fuckwad, ever think of that? Music doesn’t hurt anybody and even at full blast I can hear the police sirens just fine.

A lot of people are trying to drown out the song they were forced to listen 15 times on the radio at work that day, that is now stuck in their head. They relax that way.

  7. I’ve learned to not expect civility or consideration from anyone in this fucked-up little town. I’m pretty sure 90% are inbred morons. Niceness, maturity, and class are NOT qualities that haligonians are ever taught.

  8. tommy – don’t I have the right to NOT listen to that shit you call music as you drive beside me along with the too loud “muffler”.

    apparently not

it ain’t just the people you drive past that are annoyed by your music and thumping and muffler noise. Had some jerk last night park in front of my house, show off his stereo system to a buddy for 1/2 hour at full tilt. I thought about calling the Police but since his parents live across the street I’d rather not make bad neighbours since I just moved in. I just want to watch TV in peace and quiet and not have to listen to your crap. Just like I want a quiet ride home to get the noise of the day out of my head.

I guess the noisy people have more rights than the quiet ones.

  9. fg, People can make as much noise as they want as the law permits. You live in a city. A city, by definition is densely and highly populated. Maybe you should go live in a cave or on a farm if other people’s noise bothers you so much. As one of the bitchers recently discovered, living outside the city doesn’t always mean you’ll get peace and quiet. Maybe you should just try to relax and not let such petty little things such as music bother you. It’s music FFS, not flying AIDS infected daggers. I’m sure you bugged some people yourself in your younger years, if not with music than some other kind of noise. There are also inventions called ear plugs and noise cancelling headphones. No, to answer your question, you do not have the right to tell people to make less noise just because it bugs you. Especially if they are in their own car or home. The police will tell you the same thing. You would be surprised how well many music listeners would respond if you simply asked them politely to turn it down instead of mean mugging them and acting like they are some kind of criminal.

I agree those loud mufflers are annoying but they are legally purchased. I don’t have one of those in my car or a post market sound system.

Also, those of you who like to bang on people’s apartment walls or floor or roof. Quadruple FUCK every last one of you uncivilized pieces of shit sideways with a broken Lady Gaga CD with no lube. If my music bugs you, have the balls to knock on my door and politely request I turn it down. I will be more than happy to politely oblige. Bang on my wall or floor, though and I will turn it up louder, and probably curse you out loud enough for you to hear it through the wall, cuz guess what, I have every right to listen to music until 11 PM. I pay my rent just like you.

  10. Op have you taken a look around at who’s on the 20? Trying to stop that kind of behaviour is likely more trouble than it’s worth.

As for the above comments, my apartment faces an intersection on a hill, and it friggin SUCKS to have to listen to people’s shitty music when I’m in my living room. On top of that, the only way to get any fresh air is to open the patio door, so I get to hear it even more. Sometimes there’s even 3 or 4 cars all playing different shit with their windows down and the bass cranked (probably because they can’t hear it over their loud muffler). i have no problem with people listening to whatever music they like, but I do have a problem with unreasonable volume levels.

  11. Yeah I do too, Hollah, but for some reason it really doesn’t bother me that much. If the worst thing you have to deal with on a regular basis is some loud music from passing cars, you have a better life than a huge percentage of people on this earth. A lot of people would kill, yes, KILL to have a roof over their heads, regardless of the noise.

When you looked at the place, you should have known it was unsuitable, as it was too close to an intersection and you like a noise free home. That’s no one’s fault but your own and you will not get one milliliter of sympathy from me.

It’s. A. Free. Country. Some countries don’t allow dancing or loud music, maybe you’d prefer to live there.

  12. ‘unreasonable sound levels’…is that anything like a Concert on citadel hill (garrison grounds) & you can hear it clearly in Dartmouth.
would that be considered unreasonable ?

  13. I too live near an intersection but I mostly enjoy it! I enjoy grooving to others’ tunes for a brief time. I am a human who doesn’t need sleep so I need not worry about that.

  14. I’m sure if you actually took a look who’s on the twenty and got to know some of them, you’d realize that the majurity of us are kind, hardworking individuals and don’t enjoy listening to people curse and complain either but the truth is, there are people out there who just don’t have it as good as you. You should realize that there are underlying factors that cause people to express themselves the way they do, and if you can’t accept that, you should take a look at how you handle the factors that make you who you are. I’ve lived in Spryfield my whole life and have recieved nothing but love from the people here. If they don’t like you, i’m guessing there’s a reason.

  15. Right More,

We all have to put up with sounds and shit that we could do without.

I think is the point you’re trying to make.

Do you guys really want cops chasing down and ticketing people for playing their music too loud, with all the crime in this city? They’ve got much bigger fish to fry, as should you.

I worked hard to be able to afford a nice car, and not have to suffer like OB and the other poor souls who have to ride that dirty disease infected idiot filled thing every day. I’ll enjoy it however I please, legally. I’m OH SO FUCKING sorry if that bothers anyone. I apologize for victimizing you like this. If you really don’t like the noise that much you could try sticking your heads up your asses.. oh wait.

  16. STFU funny girl. You probably need a little action in your life. It’s music, it’s bloody music. Deal the fuck with it or sit the fuck down. Like this shite pisses me off. Closed off like a damn clam, not one moment of “flavour” in your God forsaken life. What? oh action is getting pissed off your face just to forget about the man you claim to love bagging Suzy down the road … right. I very very infrequently get nasty but that post enraged me. I see fatuous bints like your self walk into work every day, like they’re perpetually sucking on a lemon, mouths tighter than a duck’s behind! Oh sorry sorry the world intruded on your bubble. You probably take trips down South to get a little taste of culture. Like it’s some intrusion on you, some personal insult. You know what, you ain’t worth it. No, not worth it. I’m going to shave my legs and get my self down town. Oh and yeah that’s me zooming by in my hybrid (hayyyyy) with hmmm lets see I’ll put Kanye on tonight!

Fuck the fuck off! & don’t respond.

  17. Loud car stereos don’t bother me personally, they come and they go. I do think the drivers risk impairing their hearing permanently but that’s their choice.
Of course I crank my MP3 player at the gym so I can’t talk.

  18. t.j., see, that’s what i’m talking about. the attitude of some people who believe, that it is their god given right to annoy other people.i don’t give a fuck how loud you or anyone else wants to play their tunes,or whatever. just have some fucking decency, to believe that everyone shares your taste in either music, or the loudness of said music.
too many fucking people geot it in their minds, that they are the only ones that matter. WRONGO. you have to share this fucking planet with others, so either you learn to get along with them, or you will always get flack.
if i personally don’t want to hear a bunch of fucking annoying noise, i shouldn’t have to be subjected to it, the same goes for those that don’t like my kind of music, do i force gospel down your fucking throats. or how about country, do i force anyone to lissten to my super loud bass, that would rattle sears in toronto, from halifax, no i don’t. so don’t force others to have to put up with shit thet don’t want to hear, see, or feel. i have a 10,000b watt linear amp, if you want noise, it can be supplied by me. that and 2. 8 foot tower speakers, make an awesome headache.

  19. Sucks, people aren’t purposely out to annoy you, you’re just uptight as fuck. People aren’t going to whisper and tip toe for you. I really don’t see how a car passing by playing music bothers you all that much. The car makes noise anyways as it passes, what’s the difference if it’s accompanied by some tunes. I can see where you’re coming from with the crazy rattling bass that shakes your whole house. I get that in my neck of the woods too. But shit, if that kind of thing is going to get your shorts in such a knot I don’t know how you manage to get by in society. Bottom line is it is not hurting anyone so why shouldn’t I have the right to do it? You’re not going to like everything you see or hear on a daily basis and again, NO, that does not give you the right to tell people how to live their life. I don’t THINK I have this right I do have it. Some people are disgusting looking, it pisses me off to look at them. Do they have to stay in their houses to appease me? Some people have annoying fucking voices and yammer on way too loud, like the subject of this particular bitch, but since we live in a free and just country, those people are aloud to exist. Everyone pisses everyone off and you’re not going to make it through a day without hearing someone’s music, so get used to it or go live in a fucking cave, or keep bitching about it. This isn’t new, car stereos have been around since forever. I’m sure you blasted a few tunes while riding in your Westphalia or whatever in your day. Lighten up a bit.

  20. t.j., my gear is a dinosaur, the last of the well made shit in canada.last time i used it, i was asked by the cops to turn it down. as it was drowning out a live in house band, at the old tavern in sprytown mall. and i lived 2 miles away, and only had it on leval 2 volumn.
my twin towers are made by peavy, they were used as head amps for a group i had back in the 80’s. i have since sold all the guitars and mixers and wah wahs.
back in the day that i played bass, we used to need heavy duty shit, to carry the sound outdoors, and at very big gigs. the rest of the guys either died out, or went away, and who gives a shit what they do now.i was owed a ton of cash, and kept the amps, and heads as part payment.the linear amp was a custom job, designed and built by a bill mahar, from hantsport. a fine piece of work there. i could alway take it and adapt it for a 12 volt system, get a little fucky neon, and park someplace close to you for a bit. but i think it woul drive you up the wall, hearing cospel country or some other non today shit. to each their own bub. i don’t mind if you wanna go deaf, i just don’t wanna be forced to join you. i have a freedom of right, not to be inflicted with residual shit from anyone too.
those that choose loud over sensible, will pay the price down the road, i have, my hearing is less than 50 per cent of what it used to be. that’s because of the music volumn when we played. steffenwolf, styx, you name it, it was still better than a lot of crap today. but again, you choose yours, i’ll choose mine. but as stated, why should i, or anyone else, have to be subjected to stuff, that the other inflicts on us. put yourself in the other person’s shoes, to get the drift of this.

  21. tj why do they make cars that travel in excess of 160-200kmh when the most you can do is 120kmh? Not to mention the idiot that has their tunes on Warp 9 can’t hear police/fire/ambulance sirens and too into themselves to notice those revolving lights.

  22. I think they should install loud pounding music on the # 20 bus to drown that clown out.

  23. All I’m sayin is I’m not going to quiet my existence so as not to piss off other people. I’m not purposely going to go and commit acts of audio terrorism, I’m going to turn it down when it’s late and I’m near homes, or when I am idling beside other vehicles for more than a few seconds sometimes, but I like it a high level, I find once you get your car going fast it’s hard to hear the sound clearly over the engine. I really don’t feel bad for the person who has to listen to it for 2 seconds while I drive by. Like are you really gonna still be pissed off an hour later about me driving by playing music? If so, that really is no one’s problem but your own.

Again, we live in a city, every city on earth has loud music coming out of cars. You can’t escape it. And sucks you just admitted to doing the same thing you criticize others for doing. People are on their property or in their car I don’t should be looked down upon for doing what makes them happy. You can never please everyone, so if it comes down to me vs you being pleased, I take option a.

Sucks I’m sure you were blaring music out of your car as a youn’n too! Drives me nuts when people act like they were never young.

  24. one of our customer’s rode in on a ducati yesterday, it looked like a transformer…vroom

  25. All in all, it was a pretty fun weekend, but I think it could have been organized a bit better.

  26. “Audio Terrorism” haha too funny.

LS- sometimes I think you exaggerate A LOT of your stories from “back in the day”.

  27. Tommy, the sound systems in most cars during the 80s were nothing compared to the bass cannons and other accoutrements of automotive douchebaggery that seem common among the under-30s these days.

There are noise by-laws on the books and other, higher-level laws which attempt to protect citizens against a little thing like noise pollution. Your so-called “right” to make such noise is actually a violation of other people’s rights to exercise the quiet enjoyment of their rights – such as the freedom to move or the freedom to associate or to express themselves.

You, as a citizen of this city and this nation, have a responsibility to avoid infringing on the rights of others. I should not, as a citizen, be subjected to a level of noise or any other environmental conditions which can adversely affect my health; and I should not be compelled by your choice to abridge my rights to accommodate any license you may take in exercising yours beyond what is defined as “quiet enjoyment.” The defense that “everyone else is doing it” does not wash when a law is on the books and you are found violating it.

  28. yeah, look at the riot tally…
“everyone else was flipping cars and looting… why pick on me” isn’t quite holding up.

  29. lysssss I simply asked a question in regards to civility and consideration. I realize that certain factors may affect a persons social skills. However, I had social factors around me that could have made me inconsiderate of others also, but I was taught manners growing up and I was simply wondering what happened to that practice. I believe in the practice of mutual respect and consideration for each.
Also you should not assume people in Spryfield do not like me. You do not know me.
I think the conversation has jumped the shark. From buses to cars, how did that happen?

  30. tommyjules902 You may want to be careful in regards to your own hearing, I am saying this out of concern not trying to lecture you. I have a friend who sells hearing aids she is seeing more young people in their late 20s and early 30s coming in for them. The volume levels must have changed in sound systems? I think Ipods are louder then walkmans were back in the day? Can anyone compare the tech to confirm. I have not seen a walkman in years.
