What a GD surprise that our Canadian men’s hockey team gets front page coverage when they LOSE, whereas our women’s hockey team gets third page coverage in the sports section when they WIN! Not to mention winning their games with a huge gap in points! —Where. Is. The. Equality?

  1. with that rag, anything is possible. that’s why i don’t waste my time there anymore. they are too fucking prissy to let a person have an honest say in any comment.

  2. OMFG… are you serious? OP, what do you think was bigger news? The Canadian women beating….. OMG.. FINLAND at women’s hockey. FINLAND…. one of the teams that are NOT part of the perennial two-headed giant of womens’ hockey. OR, the Canadian men (toted to be favorites of this great hockey tourament) losing one of the biggest game in men’s hockey in recent years?

Now, if Cherie Piper had’ve ripped off her jersey and shoulder pads a la Brandi Chastain after scoring the winning goal (even though it was Canada’s first, 5 min into the game), well perhaps someone might have been a little shocked. Don’t worry! Canada’s win over the US women for the Gold medal should make front page headlines.

  3. As long as the Team Canada women kept beating the European teams by ridiculous scores, there’s no reason to have it on the front page. Beating those teams by a wide margin doesn’t mean much when the the teams overseas are no where near the Canadian women’s hockey program in terms of development.

Team Canada men (Basically a NHL all-star team) losing is front page worthy.

You should probably know what you’re talking about before posting a bitch.

  4. big deal !
    Some more non-news
I’d be more interested in hearing what the food specials were at Scotia Square today.

  5. it’s called interest if people are not that interested it gets bumbed back and most people don’t give a fly’n fuck bout womans hockey

  6. Aggressively misogynist (and racist, and homophobic) comments will be deleted. We encourage discussion, difference of opinion and a sense of humour, but hate speech will not be tolerated.

  7. Marty, women’s hockey is awesome. It’s not a second-rate version of the men’s, it’s almost a totally different game. Much more emphasis on skill and less on checking. LOVE IT!!

It’s great that women are playing the game at such a high level now, and that young girls are getting into it as well.

I will definitely be watching the gold medal game, and I think those gals will make us all very very proud.

I’ll watch the men’s too, of course, but it would be fab it both the women AND the men win the gold.

Hockey, being our “national” sport, shouldn’t be for just 50% of the population.

  8. well said rj, but the boys like the rougher aspect of the men’s game and i would like to see checking in wmn’s hockey but thats just me

  9. What was on the cover of the CH? A story about a figure skater whose mom died. I don’t think she even medalled. There. Happy?

  10. Canadian men losing to US = News.

Canadian women winning against a country that is still learning how to play hockey = Expected

When the Canadian women beat the US for the gold tonight (or even if they lose), then that should make the front page.

  11. Yes, I know lacross is officially (according to the Federal Government) our national sport, (and I knew it would only be a matter of time before someone pointed that out) but hockey is FAR more popular, by any definition.

That is why is deliberately put it in quotation marks. It was in the interest of brevity that I didn’t feel a need to explain what I thought was already a pretty clearly understood situation in Canada. We all KNOW about the issue, do we not?

Next time, zZz, I’ll use an asterisk and make sure my post is properly footnoted and my sources clearly cited so that any readers who may still be suffering from confusion can look to the appropriate reference and be assured that I am not trying to mis-inform anyone!

And, hey, weren’t you one of the ones who said that my posts are always too long?

    : )

  12. not I… I read em anyways.
hell, I braved the Dear A post a couple times…. it may not always be in one sitting… but I read em.
even LS’s block text that makes my eyes cross.

and citing it would be nice… I wasn’t sure about the quotes.
I actually watched a bit of lacrosse many a year ago… it’s pretty burtal and quite akin to hockey.

we just always have so much damn ice, it’s not hard to see why we prefer the slippy-slidy version.

  13. Actually, I have never seen lacrosse played, but I know some people who play it and they absolutely love it.

I have heard it’s one of the toughest and roughest sports around, and it should probably get more coverage than it currently does.

Plus, it doesn’t have a gigantic bloated NHL structure surrounding it, which is a big plus for it in my opinion.

  14. yeah… well while hockey has high-sticking… you pretty much have no choice but to carry the crosse above waist level… so the level of concentration to prevent getting beaned is pretty high.
Absolutely amazing to watch the good teams play… horrific to watch bad players try though.

and the scores are usually pretty high.

I think the brutality comes because it’s VERY physical but there isn’t much padding worn at all… it’s up there with rugby for ‘ruggedness’
