I’m getting really tired of seeing NO PETS! NO EXCEPTIONS in the apartment ads on kijiji, or people putting their cats up for adoption and the reasoning being ” i’m moving into a place that doesn’t allow pets” lets just turn this around for one second and say we started seeing “child free apartment building” OR “I’m looking for a home for 6 month old since we are moving into a child free apartment building” could you imagine the up roar? why do people think that moving into a place that doesn’t allow pets is a get out of owning your pet free card? and why do so many apartment building not allow pets? its getting out of control. I personally own 1 indoor fixed cat and yes that still limits my options for apartment hunting, but he is my pet so finding a home that wouldn’t let me take him no matter how great that place may be isn’t an option! so seriously landlords stop assuming every pet owner is lazy and doesn’t take care of their animals, and if you own a pet stop going to view places that wont allow you to bring your pet! or don’t get a pet to begin with because owning a pet limits where you can rent that’s a fact! and if you aren’t ready to deal with that then don’t get a pet! —Giving up my child because my building wont allow children

Agreed, when people give up animals because they “can’t have them where they live,” I want to tell them they should never adopt another animal ever again.
As I have already discussed- my husband and I have numerous rental properties… and investments. We don’t allow cats or shitDOGS for a reason. They are destructive filthy beasts that will bring in fleas and bedbugs.
And maybe you should that some pet owners come to that realization and want to get rid of their beasts. That is not their fault, its called being a responsible person.
I find even the places with ‘no exceptions’ will still allow an indoor cat when asked.
People can be pretty douchey but that would be a little extreme… considering in general most people themselves are more filthy and loud than any cat would be.
Funny I know someone who has NO PETS and has bedbugs……..must be those damn ninja cats sneaking in at night and infesting their apartment lol and PS in door cats generally in my experience don’t get fleas……..ever……unless an outdoor pet carrying them brings them inside. So allowing someone to have an in door cat really inst the end of the world. And giving up your pet to move into another apartment isn’t responsible at all………….its selfish, uncaring, and irresponsible. And PS children probably carry far more germs then an animal does…..just think of the day cares! uggg so why not go a step further and kick the children out to while your at it! that should make your properties all better and oh so clean 😉

I agreed 1000% OP. I would never consider giving up a family member because I was too lazy to find the right place. I do know, though, that there are a lot of delightful folks out there who move out and leave there pets behind for the super or landlord to deal with. That’s probably one reason. If another reason is that they’re destructive, which they usually aren’t, isn’t that what damage deposits are for?

Yeah I personally think child free apartments are a great idea but I guess you can’t really stop people from having children, or kick them out once they have them.
Indoor cats might be all well and good but who’s to say someone’s cat is an indoor cat? They might say it’s an indoor cat, that doesn’t make it so.
Also if there are no pet free apartments where can people with sever animal alergies live? Or people who don’t want poop on their grass?
I seem to remember reading about someone who got evicted from an adults-only building not too long ago.
Of course there need to be animal free apartment buildings…..no one said there shouldn’t. There just need to be more buildings that allow pets. Stop assuming all pet owners are lying sacks of shit who cant take proper care of their animals, and go off of judgement of the pet owner themselves and not lumping everyone one into the same neglectful category.
My mom told me when she and dad were renting when I was an infant, they had a hard time finding a place that took kids.
Also: I can guarantee the two brats that lived in my current unit were more destructive then my cats, judging by the state it was in when we looked at it and the work that had to be do

I agree with you OP but there are enough irresponsible pet owners out there to ruin things for prospective pet-owning renters. As far as kids are concerned, I’ve never had a real issue personally but I can imagine some would. Arguers and loud music have been more my bane.
I do agree again that those who dump their pets because they’re moving don’t exactly get a gold star from moi!
people who dump their pets because they prefer a particular apt over their animal companion should be neutered with a rusty dull spoon after a baby aspirin anesthetic. and then banned from living with an animal ever ever again. they should have been banned ahead of time. a goodly percentage of people who have either pets or children, should not.
lots of places don’t allow pets op and there is a very good reason for that. Look i love animals like crazy but they’re destructive as hell. Cats scratch to get your attention and if you don’t give it to them, they piss everywhere. Dogs are notorious chewers, also pee fairly liberally and howl like anybody’s business.
LIke i say, i love my animals but it’s the price you pay because they DO THIS STUFF.
What you don’t seem to understand is that for every bit of damage you do, within a wide scope of reason, beyond your damage deposit, the property owner has to foot the bill for any excessive damage your animal does. And that can get expensive when you consider that some of these landlords have dozens of units in one building.
Owning a pet isn’t easy. It’s not as hard as having a kid but it’s certainly not easy. I’ve turned down many apartments and even a job once because it wouldn’t work for me and my animal friends.
So op.. keep looking. I promise there is lots available. I’ve lived in this city with pets for many years and since i’ve been on my own, i’ve never had trouble finding a place for us to live. Sure, it may not be that perfect place you found. You may have to make sacrifices. Being the caregiver of any little creature is fraught with sacrifice so get used to it if you ever plan to have kids.

Per your point about people just casually turning their animals away because they want that perfect apartment, you’re absolutely right. It is probably one of the more despicable things people do. The whole christmas pet phenomenon makes me literally sick to my stomach.

Blip, Blip: I had bedbugs 3 years ago. My moron landlord at the time tried to accuse my dog of bringing them. He reiterated his opinion in front of the pest control guy and was quickly set straight.
Sure, pets can get fleas. But those are easily disposed of unless you have carpet. And even then you just have to treat your animal and do a good cleaning/vacuuming.
Owning pets isn’t hard. Cats, anyway. It’s a pleasure to be a slave to my feline babbies!!!

Cats tend to scratch furniture, and if they leave marks on wall, clip their nails. They also don’t piss everywhere if you get them fixed early enough.
I own 3 cats, and I have no such issues that were described above.

I can understand a building owner’s right to not allowing pets, whatever. It’s annoying but whatever. But call a spade a spade.

Go make a 20 year +, 200-750k (maybe more) commitment to buy a building and tell me if you’re going to take someone’s word that their pet is well behaved. It’s hard enough to find suitable people, people who have things you can check like credit history, criminal record, to get an idea if they are the kind of person you want to hire. There are no such things available to see if a dog is going to be the kind of dog you want living in your apartment, so you are left with the option of trusting a stranger.
Buy your own place you can do whatever you want, in the meantime stop feeeling like the world owes you and your pet a place to live. This is textbook SET behaviour/sentiment.
I f’ing love animals but I’m not about to go out and get one knowing that I may not be able to find a suitable place for the two of us. Until I can see a few years ahead I’m not even buying a bed or a dresser, it’s just more stuff I’ll have to eventually move or possibly get rid of.
I don’t blame someone in the least for taking every precaution to protect their enormous long term investment. It’s not about making assumptions about pet owners, it’s about risk management. If you want to be mad at someone be mad at irresponsible pet owners whose pets have damaged or destroyed people’s property and scared them away from renting to pet owners at all.
If I owned a building I wouldn’t want kids or animals to be quite honest.
Hey, when I buy my first income property, I totally don’t intend on renting to people with pets. Unless I know the person and know they keep proper care if their pets. Cats will piss all over the place if they’re sick or their box isn’t cleaned. It’s not the kitteh, it’s the owner that’s the problem and no one’s gonna admit they suck at keeping their pets.
i don’t plan on buying an income property but i have room for a yurt in the backyard

I love animals but there is no denying, whether they are well taken care of or not, they fucking smell. But then I know some tenants in my previous building that stunk to high hell too…
