I work at a grocery store that recently changed how much it charges for bags. This grocery store is already more expensive than most other food store in Halifax, yet customers are constantly yelling at the cashiers about an extra 25 cents for a bag?  Cashiers are making minimum wage at a job where they’re on their feet the whole day; they have NO influence over the store’s pricing policies. Getting mad at them and going on and on about exactly why you refuse to pay for a bag or think it’s horrible that stores charge for them accomplishes nothing but making your cashier’s day just a little bit shittier. You don’t want to pay for a bag? Don’t take a bag! Or bring your own! —It’s really very simple!

  1. fuck you! I pay taxes. I can bitch about poeple nickle and dimeing me for shit that used to be free.

  2. The bag doesn’t cost the store 25 cents; they are making a profit from it. Yes, it’s a fucking piss off! And stop internalizing it; you represent the store ergo you get the comments. Instead of bitching here, go back to Pete and tell him we don’t like the damn charges! He’s to blame for the problems you face, not the customer.

  3. People are such entitled dickbags these days. If you don’t want to pay what they’re charging for the bags then the biggest message you can send to this company is to SHOP ELSEWHERE.

  4. Charlie Brown, taking the issue to Pete himself will not do any good. He sold the small chain to Sobeys last winter….
25 cents is pretty bold, even for a fru-fru store like Pete’s was known for.

  5. I think the answer is that “Pete’s” need to have a sign at the entrance detailing their new policy – just like the “plastic bagless” SuperStore on Quinpool has a big sign at each entrance – so that people know what to expect.

And I agree with the OB that it’s nasty to take it out on the clerk. They are just doing what they are told. I saw a miserable old bastard make a very young high school aged clerk in another store cry one day because she asked him if he wanted to donate a dollar to charity. He could have simply said “no thanks”.

So, contact management if you disagree with the policy. Don’t shoot the messenger.

  6. Yep, crab at and blast the management for the evil Empire gouging their customers at the Pete’s store. After all the poor cashiers are just trying to make a living and do not set store policy. I am almost amazed that Empire have not started to charge for bags at their Sobeys branded stores – yet.

  7. Sorry to say, but getting yelled at by rude customers with misplaced rage is part of the part-time job experience. It sucks but it does encourage you to stay in school!

  8. Sorry to say but the current practice of telling front-line staff of their displeasure is common and has been done for many years. I see little change. It is up to the front-line person to inform management of issues they see. If they don’t, nothing changes and they will continue to hear about it. Don’t like it? Don’t work there!

  9. Bitching about the price of bags is pointless. It doesn’t lower the price of the bags. Don’t like it? Don’t shop there. I don’t. Not since Sobeys version of Luckett’s vision ruined a sweet thing. I guess they have to try to recoup some of the Safeway losses somehow so they decided to bring it home and nickel and dime Nova Scotian’s to more align the profit differences.

  10. @Flowery the flower. Yes but it’s not her / his fault! They didn’t make the decision to charge 0.25 per bag. It’s very rude and uncalled for to yell at the cashier because you don’t like something at that large establishment!

  11. I happen to know cashiers are people, they’re the people directly charging me 25¢ a bag.

And to make a ¢ sign on your keyboard hit Option 4 for Mac and Alt 0612 for PC.

  12. People are assholes. I feel bad for teenage girls and old women trying to make ends meet who have to take the brunt of abuse because some pencil necked shithead in an office in Antigonish has decided that the .25/bag makes perfect sense.

  13. I am impressed that the OP got “They’re” and “Their” right; you don;t see that too often these days.

  14. I have a shit-load of plastic bags that I’m happy to sell for 5 cents a piece…

    (Alt 0612 didn’t work Nukka).
