So now I have to pay $150 to ‘renew my licence plates’? I just wasted half a saturday last week getting my 2 year old car ‘inspected’ – don’t worry it still has 4 wheels and a gas pedal so it passsed….
And what do I receive in exchange for THIS 150 bucks? Nothing. The plates look just fine to me. Not sure why they need to be ‘renewed’. Oh yeah, the gool ‘ol Nova Scotia cash grab. Nice.

Yeah, I agree. Had to do mine last week. At least send me something….a gift basket or something.
Did you expect this to be free? What are you new?
Nevermind: nope, they’re not new, just stupid. These are they types of people that think they should get it all for free. As if driving is a right and not a privilege. Here’s a tip for you OP: next time, go in a month early instead of waiting to do it. You’ll save money and the stickers will be good for the same amount of time.
Its a common thing, it is a pain in the ass but we have always had this rule
OMG the OB had to register their vehicle. Did he or she come from a province where this isn’t done? If so, which one? At least they changed it so you have to do it every two years and not every year as with some places.
The reregistration of motor vehicles is simply a tax grab.
It makes very little sense to have to renew the plate on your car ,if you still live in the same place & all the information is up to date.
With the outrageous taxes placed on the fuel needed to run our motor vehicles, insurance scams that suck far more money out of our Province than it will ever put back in. I don’t believe that hitting us every 2 years for $150.00 is fair.
If you move, sell you vehicle, reregistering it & being charged a fee makes sense & would IMO be much more fair to us, the over taxed public.
After all, besides filling the government coffers, what does registering a vehicle that has already been registered when it was bought, & all information about owner ,address, phone etc. has remained unchanged . For me it begs the question. WHY this tax grab? ? ?
Vehicle registration is not new but do we ever question it’s purpose? Just what is it that entitles the government to demand a fee above or beyond the cost of administration and why must they do it repeatedly? When we buy a car the registration process ensures the gov’t gets their share of sales tax and related registration information about the car and the owner. Each time a car changes hands they get all of this again. Why should a vehicle registration expire? Ever? (keep in mind, proving safety standards are upheld could be a condition of “retaining” registration)
While you’re at it, what have you learned that makes you think driving is a “privilege” and not a “right”? Do you feel the same about walking or riding a bike?
Just because you were born into or simply live in a society that somewhat agrees on a set of rules does not mean they’re right or even good. Stop swallowing shit just because the government has been feeding it to you the same way your whole lives. You’re not a sheep. You’re not a cow. THINK. This is YOUR country. This is YOUR life. The government is not your God and it’s not your parent either. Keep it in it’s place by THINKING FOR YOURSELF and by QUESTIONING THE OLD WAYS.
Wow, I am just so inspired! I think I’m going to go change my life!
Of course it’s a tax grab – I don’t see anyone disputing that. It’s the OP’s shocked reaction to it that has me making fun of it. Must be his first plate renewal.
If it is, good on ’em… courage to call bullshit when they see it
I agree that it is a cash grab but these services require some sort of payment. I think they should lower the price, or at least not raise the price for a while. The one thing I want to know is why the hell am I paying so much for this crap and Access Nova Scotia is still languishing in the stone age. How many times has their system crashed in the last little while? And you’d think they could maybe teach a course in customer service. Did anyone ever tell them it was a piss off when they stood around and yakked with each other whilst there were 60 people waiting in line? Just a though.
I agree with More.
If there is a fee to be paid, fine. But I’d like to see some sort of tangible service rendered for that fee. That is where this plate renewal BS falls flat.
They send me a letter demanding $150. I give it to them or else they won’t let me drive. They don’t actually DO anything for me, they just cash the cheque. How is that NOT government run extortion???
Supreme Court of Canada says that driving is a privilege and not a right. I think they’re pretty smart and actually spent some time thinking about it. The decision is pretty well reasoned as well.
I get that maybe this is too expensive – but driver registration is a major way of tracking people when they break the law with their car. If we only asked people to renew when the car was sold and never required them to update information WHO would tell Access that they had moved? And then when they hit someone with their car and Access didn’t have the info to find them wouldn’t we just complain about that?
That being said $150 seems high to me, don’t get the need for that.
I dunno it’s really astonishing to look at the rates 10 years ago and compare them to today’s rates.
I remember when I turned 16 the license book was free and the driver’s test was 11 bucks. Now you have to pay for the book and the test is like 45 bucks last I heard (could be more).
I also remember when renewal fees for licenses were like 45 bucks or something, now it’s 71 bucks. It’s sad, especially since insurance companies and provincial gas taxes are already ass raping the common joe just tryin’ ta get from point a to point b.
‘I give it to them or else they won’t let me drive. ‘
uh, not to oust myself or anything but I hummed and hawd about it and went 2 extra months without getting it… and yes, it was my first renew.
when I finally did shell it out, they didn’t give me the sticker with 22 months left, I got a full 24. woot!
zZz stickin it to the man for 61 days!
