I have travelled to that fucking welfare rock for the last time. Every restaurant I went to over the week I was there (from Port Shitberry to Sydney via the Cabot Trail Borefest was a complete rip-off. The restaurants were dirty, the food complete crap (when you have to go to McD’s to get something decent to eat, that’s pretty fucking bad) and the prices inflated beyond belief, i.e. nearly $9 for a one piece order of fish and chips. The serving people were surly and rude at best. So much for Island hospitality. If they separated from the rest of the N.S., I’d only be too happy. What a hole.

The most tedious and viewless drive in the world is the secondary highway from Louisbourg to Port Hawkesbury. I’d rather have a jackhammer pounding up my poop shute than do that route again.

agreed, lovinglife.someone who calls mcd’s something ‘decent to eat’ obviously does not have a valid opinion.it has been at least a year and a half since i spent a cent ad mcd.
I think the OP was happy with a piece of fish and chips, but was astounded at the price, lovinglife.I haven’t eaten in CB restaurants as I only camp there, so I can’t judge the prices, but I always like the drives across. But I always though CB should separate from NS and join NL. Much more culturally similar.

Jammie, i see your point, but i stand by mine.i would (and do!) rather not eat anything at all, and feel hungry for a couple of hours than eat at mcdonalds.
Just curious – is that a political / philosophical stance? I am somewhat ashamed to say I find Rotten Ronnie’s rather tasty, as in I really really like the taste. But I also avoid it like the plague simply because of the poor nutritional and extreme fat and sodium content.
its a bit of everything.i disagree with their corporate policy. i disagree with their marketing. i hate the taste of just about everything they sell. i would rather consume illegal drugs, than mcdonalds because at least the drugs give me a good feeling, not just damage my body (i guess that would be the fat/sodium/preservatives part of it). i have heard plentiful stories of what goes on behind the counter from people who work there (who themselves dont eat there).dont get me wrong, i am by no means uber-conscious about what i eat or how i live. i just dont want to encourage a corporation that i disagree with by giving them my money.
Mcdonald’s – SHUDDER – their burgers taste like those old Gainesburger patties for dogs – oh, I forgot – Gainesburgers have real meat in them.

Sorry to veer off the clueless socio-political posturing and back onto the OP’s topic, but I couldn’t agree more with the lack of decent dining options on the Isle. If you search on chowhound.com you can get a few decent recommendations but for the most part CB is the home of tourist traps serving High Liner fish triangles and Valley Farms fries. Pretty awful, espeically in the boonies.
the servers were probably rude because you’re a whiny little bitch. there’s enough decent food on the cabot trail (main street and atlantic restaurant in ingonish, for starters) and if you’re looking for exquisite cuisine, don’t go to cape breton.
After the Cape Bretoners finished constructing the EI Office and the Licqour Store, there just wasn’t that much interest in building a fancy restaurant.

Where the hell did you find fish n Chips for less than $9 in Halifax! If you went up there with that attitude no wonder they were rude to you. (if your telling the truth). Karen I’m not sure why that offends you, or why you would even assume it was supposed to be offensive. At least to an outsider, the two islands have maintained and celebrate a similar heritage of Scottish and Irish culture, with similar music, similar accents, that sort of thing…much more so than the mainland.I guess you just assumed that I meant both were over run by EI addicts or something.
