ARGH!!
I just spent the last hour looking at the ZENN car (zero emmission, no noise), a beautiful electric car that is manufactured in Canada but that WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DRIVE ON OUR ROADS YET.
And the reason for this lack of freedom is masked as “safety standards”.
Safety and protection of its people its totally Canada’s best and worst attribute.
Although I hate lots of things in the States (such as rampant guns), at least they get to buy electric cars with no airbags, and drink unpasteurized milk if they want to (my other pet peeve in Canada!).
I’M SO SICK OF THIS!
The world is moving on, and coming to terms with the need to live greener, etc, and how nice it is to live not dependent on oil.
MAKE THE ZENN CAR LEGAL TO DRIVE ON ALL CANADIAN ROADS, YOU BUREAUCRATIC JERKS, AND DO IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you watch “Who Killed the Electric Car”? That fucking PISSED me off. Fucking oil & car companies in collusion, robbing the fuck out of us.
Make the ZENN safer, like the SMART car.
The Zenn car can only go about 40 km per charge and takes hours to chare fully, not to mention the max speed of this car is 40km/hr. Good luck travelling aywhere in HRM at 40km/hr, you wouldn’t be able to take the Circ, the North West Arm Drive/dunbrack, Beford Hwy, magazine hill, or any major highway in the province. I do think it is a great idea but very impractical in an urban sprawl environment. Maybe one day they will have a car like this that can to 90 or 100 km/hr that will pass the high speed saftey tests.

Unfortunately, I can’t think of a single place in HRM, on an average traffic day, where a ZENN car wouldn’t cause massive snarl-ups. Environmentally-friendly cars are a great idea, but perhaps not practical quite yet?

After reading the OP I went to the ZENN website to check it out. I have to say I was quite impressed with the car and seriously unimpressed by our politicians. Wankers!!My initial concerns would be 1) the electricity would still have to come from somewhere and in HRM, that somewhere is a coal fired generating plant. The car may not have direct emissions but it would increase the emissions form the generating stations. 2) Would it be able to handle the hills in HRM?Mortimer – They are already looking into the technology to provide an electric car that will do 100km/h so there is hope.And since massive snarl-ups already exist, 40km/h would be like the bullet train through Lower Water Street or Armdale during rush hour. 😉 And I would rather a snarl-up of zero-emission vehicles than SUV behemoths that are being driven now. First off your an idiot.Secondly, there are cars that havent been sold in Canada because they didnt meet our standards. Example: The Mistisubishi Evo … In its tenth generation, its the only one to be made to pass our standards…So dont get your panties in a bunch for buying a car that may very well be below standard. Sure its environmentaly friendly (seems to me alot of people are selling that pretty strong)… but it might not pass our standards (which is a good thing to have)… cant have anyone just selling garbage cars here.IMO the car you’ve mentioned is a POS and your being sucked into the environment craze.
Katz…HRM does not have a coal burning power plant. More than a decade ago HRM’s Mill Cove power plant was converted from coal buning to oil burning. Although it still is a fossil fuel burning plant, the oil it burns (Bunker C) it much cleaner than coal.
First I have to second qwerty’s motion, of go watch Who Killed the Electric Car, it will piss you off, but you’ll realise that they went though this entire issue 10 years ago and had the answers, and still do. Second, we have enough wind and solar power in Canada to run electric cars without any oil whatsoever. Going electric doesn’t mean going back to coal. Maybe if we can convince people that the car noise will be lessened, they won’t mind the noise of the wind turbine near their home.
JamesK…Thanks for the correction. I was still under the impression that HRM was coal-fired supplied. My mistake.My point was that I just wish people would stop short-stroking at the prospect of electric cars and recognize the electricity still has to come from somewhere. And currently, it’s predominantly fossil fuel burning and still polluting and non-renewable.I hope we can see the day when the two technologies catch up with each other…when highway capable electric cars can be supplied by clean renewable energy. I hope I will live to see the day…

Please don’t confuse that comment as serious…that’s sarcasm for those that lack the ability to detect it.If NSP doesn’t BURN coal…why do they still budget to purchase it? Too true Christopher. The Canyoneros would still reign until there were no gas stations left. If they can afford it, they will pollute.Just for friendly clarification, the statement was that there were no coal burning plants in HRM…..NSP, on the other hand, have 4 coal-fired plants, according to their website, in Sydney, Point Aconi, Point Tupper and Trenton.

NSPI still burns coal in some plants, “Ecology Action” would have us beleive that 80% of our electricity comes from coal fired plants which is just untrue.We North Americans really love our cars. Why is it that trains, an older yet more prefected mode of transportation is left by the wayside here? What really needs to happen, just like in the 1900’s when those cookey inventors the Wright Brothers revolutionized transportation with their flying machines, we need to have some nutbar scientist come up with a mode of transportation (or atleast propulsion) that does not use or rely on the internal/inefficient burning of a fossil fuel. But I don’t think the seven sisters (Oil Companies) and their paid government whores will ever allow that to happen until every last drop of oil is sucked from the earth. However at that point Exxon Mobil and Irving Oil will probably be slashing the rain forests to plant their wheat, corn and soy crops.
Are you certain that the EAC is wrong? I’m looking at the NSPower website and it says that 75% of the energy in NS is Coal Powered. When I worked at the lingan power plant it was providing 43% of the power the province required. I’m sure that 5% difference is how you look at the numbers.
I agree that an Electric car is a great idea, but I don’t know that I could deal with a car that only goes 25mph and then requires 8 hours to fully charge. I do see that the City Zenn is planned for release in 2009, with a range of 400km and a max speed of 125kph. That sounds a lot more my speed. Maybe by then, they will have made whatever modifications are necessary to meet Canadian Safety Regulations. That’d be cool.
