What the fuck? Canada Games officials are actually telling people they can’t use the phrase on signs here in Halifax unless they pay a $1000 sponsorship fee. WOW that is the lowest, shittiest, fuckfaced attitude I have ever heard. Fuck them. I won’t let my kids near these events if that is how these morons are treating the host city. What an asshole that douche is. I should trademark the word donut. —Thought It Was About The Kids NOT THE CASH

  1. Someone still has pay for the games. And, who are you kidding, with that attitude, I highly doubt that you were going to pay to attend any event anyway. So they only thing the Canada Games Committee lost from you was your negative attitude.

  2. I was going to post a similar bitch when I read this in the Herald on Saturday. A sign that says, “Welcome Canada Games participants” is something that a small-business owner needs to pay $1000 to have outside his establishment? That is absolutely ludicrous!!! We are supposedly known for our hospitality, WHICH apparently, we are not able to easily extend now due to this stupid piece of copyright!

WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK! So what if someone posts a sign on their front lawn extending a warm welcome to the athletes that they’ll see as they commute to the various venues? OK, before I continue, I understand that this can easily be facilitated by re-wording a sign to say, “Welcome athletes” or some bullshit like that, but that is NOT the point. It’s not only the athletes that are participants, but the volunteers, coaches, families, etc, etc… are they not welcome as well?

So, for those that were simply wanting to express that good ol’ hospitality in welcoming all of our out of province/city guests, or in some cases even offer discounts to make the trip easier for these visitors…. instead of the great feeling they could get out of being able to do so, they get a call saying “thanks, but no thanks….” Fucking horse shit.

  3. Good thing we didn’t get the Commonwealth Games, the low-rent country hicks that make up our province probably wouldn’t have been able to get their heads around the concept of commercialization of sport.

Yes, its a douche thing to do, but thats how the world works, even in amateur sport, duh.

  4. when i heard about it i was not surprised. i found it absurd but thought that businesses could have fun with it…ALL HAIL GREAT NORTHERN PARTICIPANTS AND OTHERS

  5. It is apparently about the almighty dollar.
I think its a disgrace this business owner is being punished for extending a welcome and hospitality, for which we are apparently known, to the athletes, their families and friends, coaches etc.
    Shameful.

  6. I wonder if the bed bugs had to pay for the pleasure of biting the atheltes?
This event, is a non event, NS might win the award for most improved – sounds like Prize Day at One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest.
Cranky – I for one am extremely glad we didn’t get the Commonwealth Games – the added amount to our already horrendous debt would be disgusting.

  7. that bullshit was just plain fucking stupid. okay then, canada games, canada games, canada games, canada games. so fucking sue me you assholes. just try it, and i’ll litigate you fools for the next 500 years.

  8. Don’t see a problem with it, FIFA have had this problem for years with companies claiming they are the “official” such and generally making money off the event by duping people in to thinking that they are somehow connected.

  9. Some companies are official and recognized sponsors of the Games, and as such have the right to use the Games logo/name in their advertising, versus some cheap-ass merchant.

  10. I understand that the Games organizers want to protect their image and whatever, but I would think that a sign saying something along the lines of “Welcome Canada Games Participants” would fall under fair use.

  11. Sure but they could just say “Welcome Canada” gets the same message, plus why are they not welcoming the families and general public from the other provinces anyway?

  12. I think that welcoming the parents, etc. is sort of implied. Regardless of semantics, I think a business should be able to use the Canada Games name as long as they a) aren’t falsely claiming to be an official merchant and b) aren’t otherwise intentionally using the name of the Games for profit.

  13. My view remains the same, the merchants who paid to be sponsors should be the only ones allowed to advertise the name and what not. Why should everyone with a chalk board be allowed to benefit when some organizations actually paid for the right to.. It’s not ideal, and a little lame, but nonetheless, it is only fair. And don’t tell me they’re just being welcoming, they are being welcoming in the hopes those athletes and their families will walk in and spend money.

  14. Or “Welcome Athletes but Admin People Can GFY”

Tee, Gov’t pays for the games. They are trying to make the games a profit center instead of a donation to youth. The athletes aren’t paid. It is bad enough that the sports arenas are so filled with ads you can’t see the game anymore, but this parading around town and being a king-sized prick (the only way he can be, no doubt) screams TORONTO.

A local newspaper had a whole section on them; did they pay $1000 just to use the banner?

  15. I don’t know about the rest of you….but I wanted to see some racing on the oval. See what all the hype was & go eat out with my honey.
So I made a date with the girlfriend went into Halisux & when I seen the BULLSHIT they had with blocked off streets, the entire parking lane along Citadel Hill & the new High school shut down….I said “fuck this noise”, & we left.
It soured me & even though I use a bow & would have loved to see the competition in Sackville for the archery stuff…. I don’t have time for overbearingsuperimportantannallyretentiveshitforbrainsorganizers who subject us, the PAYING PUBLIC TO SUCH SHIT.

I tried…I really tried & was completely astounded by the BS ! And I refused to give it a second chance at a different venue !!

  16. The government doesn’t cover 100% of the cost, the rest is covered by generated revenue such as sponsorships and what not. Someone does need to pay for what the government doesn’t cover and those ads you mentioned do that. As for the prick, I honestly have no idea what the hell you’re talking about. And yes I’m assuming the local newspaper paid for a sponsorship, they likely also paid to cover the events.

Point being, the games ARE about the youth and SOMEONE does has to pay for them, which includes ads, and the merchants who pay $1000 to use “Canada Games” in the hopes of attracting new clientele.

  17. Tee, The head honcho trumpeted to the local newspaper that he was walking around Hfx telling any and all to remove the offending phrase from anything, and he even confronted a major national retailer and made them take their sign down.

BTW I get the whole pay vs. nay argument the fact is that this is shit of the highest order.

  18. Alright, I get the argument that it all could have been handled with a little more tack, but from the sounds of the article, it was a merchant that alerted the newspaper in question about this and they then contacted officials to see what gives. Still not a reason to call him a king-sized prick. He does have a job to do and from the sounds of it he didn’t personally walk around confronting local retailers.

  19. I suggest you read the article again, it clearly states “we contacted” which I in no way interpret that as “I personally walked around”… Stop making a mountain out of a mole hill and get over it.
