Man… stop freaking out about the weather. What everyone’s experiencing is called Fall, and aside from a few times it snows around Halloween, there’s no snow pretty much every year till Christmas. You’d know that if got out of your cubicle, mansion, apartment, whatever other dark, comfy hole you exist in, and spend enough time outside to really witness weather patterns. Yes, it’s getting warmer – but for god’s sake, SHUT UP. —Hows the Weather Today?

Oh FFS, the world has been warming since the last ice age. Are we speeding it up a little? Probably! Weather is not a constant, it changes daily (day to day, month to month, year to year), that’s why meteorologists can’t even bat 50% on a day to day basis. This global warming scare is reminiscent of the “acid rain” bullshit in the 80’s when if we didn’t stop using hairspray and spray deodorant the rain would eat the paint off of our cars in 10 years.
I’m not arguing that we shouldn’t be environmentally conscious, but the neo-hippy scare tactics need to stop. It’s more a money making scheme for selling carbon offsets (biggest scam going) and increasing the price of “green friendly” products and services (which all use fossil fuels to make, ship and distribute with the profits fueling suv’s and mansions for the owners of the “green” companies), than it is a concerted effort to have a zero carbon footprint.
We only have two damn seasons so get over yourselves.
We have construction season & the season of bad weather.
That’s it.

Au contrare Mr. Harper! Acid rain was/is a reality then and now. It happens not from hairspray, you’re thinking about chlorofluorocarbons which were in aerosol cans and caused ozone depletion, but sulfur and nitrogen pollution. The molecules of these chemicals bond with oxygen creating sulfuric and nitric acids which bond with airborne particulate and fall as acidic precipitation, rain or snow. Acid rain affects lakes and streams that lack buffering capacity in the surrounding soils and release metals which can be toxic to aquatic animals. Acid rain also adversely affects trees, a foundation of terrestrial ecosystems.
Ozone depletion is interesting because the root cause of it, chlorofluorocarbons, was used widely in industry back in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Those who called for the immediate ban on them because of the effects in the ozone layer were greeted with scorn for their “junk” science. Two large holes in the ozone layer appeared, one over each pole. They did prevail however and the chemicals were banned as part of the Montreal Protocol.
Both acid rain and ozone depletion were intially received as extremist “Chicken Little” propaganda back in the day and both have been proven to be realities.
The climate change debate is so reminiscent of those and I have no doubt that it too will proven to be a reality. The deniers can have their little dream and hang onto the past but reality will set in and that’s when the work of international cooperation will begin. Hopefully.
Thankfully Canada threw in the towel on Kyoto, because if this is Global Warming, I’m loving it 🙂
I’m not denying global warming, you can’t argue the fact that it’s been happening since the last ice age, or we’d be living on a glacier. Do I think and say we should be environmentally conscious? I believe I did. Who’s to say in 200 years the earth isn’t going to be in a cooling cycle? Do I think that’s possible? Maybe. Am I realistic and think that won’t be the case? Yup, but I won’t be alive then to be proven wrong or right. I recycle, don’t drive around in a gas guzzling vehicle that I don’t need, and am mindful of my responsibility toward making a difference. Does this mean I have to buy into the bullshit propaganda and scare tactics that rage filled hippies tout around as gospel? Not a fucking chance. The reality is there is nothing that any amount of people can do, our society has progressed far too fast and there is no going back, so if scorched earth is the future, I’m investing in sunscreen and water!!
try living up in northern ontario for about 6 months o.p., then tell me there is more than 2. it is fucking cold up there about 9 months in a year. kapuskasing is the worst fucking place for that. my uncle lives there, and i used to visit him in the summer. which lasted all of 2 weeks in august.
We are on a warming trend right now, I believe it is driven by human activity but even if it wasn’t, human activity will exacerbate the situation. The science behind climate change is solid and will affect the lives of billions of people in the not-too-distant future. It has already started, glaciers melting in the Andes not to mention the acceleration of methane release in the Arctic permafrost due to the melt there.

You’re right, our society has “progressed” very fast but the not going back part, we may not have any choice.

Give me 80 , 90, 100 degrees outside & I’m happy. I can celebrate & party with my family at Christmas even better than we do now if there was no snow.

Well Richard Z, and all the other weather people are bang on as usual. It’s going to be a green…..wait what the fuck is that white stuff out there.
Well the thing is boys and girls, the northeastern coast of North America and the western coast of Europe Great Britain mainly, are kept from consistant cold temperatures during the winter due to the gulf stream, a oceanic conveyor of warmer surface water that runs from the south Atlantic to the north Atlantic.
The ongoing climate change due to mankind’s industrial activity does amplify that a bit. However, northwest to us is the Greenland ice shield. As I understand it, as this ice shield melts, trillions of gallons of cold fresh water will pour into the north Atlantic at an unpredictable rate. Fresh non-saline water is lighter than saline water. Since the gulf stream is saline, it will sink and be pushed southward by a glut of formerly Arctic ice. The result? We will be plunged into a deep freeze and severe winters.
That’s why “climate change” is a more accurate term than “global warming”. Different areas of the globe will be affected differently.
Just my thoughts on that particular topic, near and dear to my heart.
