Why is is that wokrers is coffee places and clothing stores started addressing their customers as , HUN/Honey? Is this an attempt at being the cool truck stop waitress? Enough already, it’s insulting to people with class!

Hate it. It’s quite unprofessional and borderline rude.
I’ve noticed that from a lot of people in the service industry. Although personally I’ve never really taken offence to it, especially when they have my coffee ready before I approach the counter :). Now I know some people take offence to that!!
Unprofessional maybe, but definately not rude. It’s intended as a friendly gesture, why not just accept it as such? Even tacky pleasantries are a welcome addition to customer service as far as I am concerned.
If ‘people with class’ are insulted by customer service pleasantries, they can always patronize places where the staff look down their noses at them, are condescending to them, or completely ignore them because they aren’t good enough to shop or drink coffee there. No shortage of places like that in town.
I think you need to lighten up a bit there Lemon. If by “people with class”, you are referring to yourself, it makes me wonder what you are doing down in this lowclass joint today… Slummin’ or what???Its not a big deal to call someone hun, honey, bud, dear, or luv. Its just a term of friendly endearment that is lot warmer than the grunt that you get from a lot of service and retail folks these days… At least they are trying to make it a better day… I mean what do you want? Yes sir, No sir, Three bags full… Get over yourself…
Finally someone said something about this! So irritating, derogatory, sexist and rude! ANd so not cool. Miss or Sir is just fine thank you!
OK Sir… Sorry Sir… Won’t happen again Sir…
Miss and Sir imply a certain formality that is not necessarily friendly. Sure, they are polite and respectful, but I find “hun, dear, luv, etc” friendly and approachable. I would prefer servers treat me as an equal (hun, luv) than articificially stroke my ego with “sir this and Sir that”. Maybe I am just not classy enough though.
Matt, it surprises me you work in sales…you come off to be such an asshole. I really hope you are different in real life…what type of sales are you in?? Just wondering…
The only places I can picture being called ‘honey’ would be Swiss Chalet, Ardmore-esque eaters, Irving Big Stops, and ‘theme’ restaurants located in box store suburbia. Not exactly places I would expect people ‘with class’ to go for ‘not being called honey’ kind of service.Look, its not the end of the world, you’re probably eating in a place one step above where your service presses a picture of a burger when your order is being placed. What are you? 22? Suck it up, it gets better.Pabst Blue Ribbon!
I’ve been called that at stores in the mall, at the hospital, the car dealer, Starbucks
“people with class” hahah.. thats comical..I don’t mind it when people use the word hun, or honey with me.. Like someone else said in the comments, most times you get a douchebag for a customer service rep, and you’re lucky if you can even get eye contact, let alone a grunt of a hello…Call me honey anytime sugar 😉
What part of the world are we in anyway? We’re in the fucking Maritimes! Get over it. What’s so unusual about someone using a term of endearment like that in the service industry in this friendly corner of the globe? If you don’t like it move to Toronto or Calgary where you can be assured your pretentiousness will be the norm. And seriously, if you think you have “class” learn proper fucking grammar.
this reminded me of a recent law passed in england….ridiculoushttp://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=550808&in_page_id=1770&ct=5I’m not sure why anybody is concerned with being so professional and classy when they are getting a simple cup of coffee. I don’t think people are trying to be ‘cool’, I think they are human.
Sexist????? That’s a good one since most of the people who say ‘hun’ in retail are far nicer to deal with than the sullen assholes who think they are doing you a big fucking favor by serving you.
what a yuppy snob you are….maybe you should go to Starbucks and get a barista to help you hun while your ordering your extra tall I’m a fucking snob expresso drink….
Haha, using the word hun is far more “classy” than people who use classy to mean…er for lack of a better work, classy. “That’s classy” makes me think of people like Lindsay Lohan’s mom!
Mouhahaha, I almost forget, only in Halifax would someone think that Starbucks is “classy”. I used to work in a cafe and we’d get all those bleach blond, soccer mom’s with their SUV’s illegally parking in front so they could scream at us to hurry up before the parking authority came and slapped them with a big ticket. They definitely thought they were “classy” folks but like all things, its subjective. Someone needs to take these people and drop them in the centre of the Bridle Path- then they’d see what hot shit they really are!
so now we are judging people on their choice of caffeinated beverages? How juvenile and insecure is that? I’m no where near “classy” and Starbucks is the only place to get a decent cup of coffee. Then I go sit with my coffee at “other” coffee shops and feel like the Halifax scum that I am. You seemed to miss the fact that I menitonned other professional places such as hospitals, yet we all freak out at the word Starbucks? Get a life children.
Hey Matt, you mentioned wanting some advice on using these terms in a professional setting (while conducting business) so I’m offering up my two cents worth…:) Some women may take offence to a man calling them Hun while discussing business (or conducting a business transaction). In this respect, it may be too “casual” for lack of a better word and some women may find it degrading. Nonetheless, I believe that in the service industry, it’s acceptable. You may need to gague who you’re saying it to. Take it for what it’s worth. 🙂
Somebody called me “Hun” once. Turned out she thought I was Attila The. Drum roll.
Matt, If I’m not mistaken people on here often talk about your inability to spell and put together a literate sentence. By the way…professional is spelled with two S’s not one. You have to capitalized your “I” after the question mark (as well as many other words you forgot to capitalize). Surprised has an R before the P…it’s not SU-prised (which you spelled incorrectly twice). You forgot your apostrophe in isn’t. “Ligit” as you spelled it should be spelled legit, with an E (and that is still only the slang word, it’s actually legitimate). I’m assuming you mean “only” when you typed “onky” (along with a number of other typographical errors). Again you forgot your apostrophe in don’t. You should have a comma after “possibly you”. And arguing is not spelled with an E. I also picked up on the fact that you spell “obvious” with an E…there is no E. Maybe you should use spell check before you press submit so you don’t sound so much like a poorly educated tool. And just because you want to HEAR (which you spelled as here, as in referring to a place) all my bull shit answers: I graduated high school in Halifax in the top 5% of my class of 450 students and I’m now in my third year of university in a science program. I am also a part-time employee. You give me much to assume that you have NOTHING more than a grade twelve education since you posted that you used to work retail and had to work your way up (which generally doesn’t take much education), and as I previously stated, your inability to spell and put together a literate sentence. Anyways, like I said, I would get bored of this in a couple days and leave. So, this is me leaving! Have a nice life loser, while you’re still on here in five years complaining because you have nothing better to do.
Jane, STFU already.. NOONE CARES ABOUT COMMAS AND TYPOS!We do not care what kind of education you have. Im sure you went over your post 10000 times to make sure you did not have one spelling error… big freekin deal..get a damn life will you.. “”””Anyways, like I said, I would get bored of this in a couple days and leave.””””” AND COME BACK as a different name of course..Ugh you make me sick
Jane is a serious loser… she was all over this board all weekend commenting on bitches from 1997. Oh, and Jane? That compulsive correcting thing is a huge indicator of a big time inferiority complex. Maybe you and ex-halig can hook your complexes together and produce a little self-loathing, racist gremlin.
jane = ginger.. that explains it all
She’s sure weird enough… she commented on a bitch this weekend from back in feb or march (the rude wal-mart worker one) – a bitch that had been dead for a while – and said she works at wal-mart and hates it when people ask her how she’s doing when hey really don’t care. Scrolling down…. there’s Jane again, but Jane in the past, saying she works in a call centre, and hates when people ask how she’s doing when they don’t care. Almost the identical post, but when I asked her about it, she said it’s because there are 2 Janes… ?Very Ginger-esque.
Janeger
There’s only 1 Jane.Read the Wal-Mart comments, where she posted almost exactly the same thing twice, but contradicted herself by saying the first time that she works @ a call centre, the next time she said she worked at Wal-Mart. When I pointed it out, she said there are 2 Janes.Riiiiiiiiight.
mabye she works at the walmart call center… not sure if they have one, but im sure she will say they do now..
Glad to see Lynn say what I’ve always said: anybody who uses the word “cl*ssy” is anything but!But I agree that “hun” might be rather downmarket, but iat least it’s pleasant. What REALLY bothers me is the kind of retail worker who works in a certain kind of store and thinks that by virtue of selling expensive items, somehow THEY are entitled to act snottily toward customers they deem unworthy.First, they are still $8/hour retail workers, not some kind of cultural elite. Second, real wealthy / cultured / elite people do NOT act that way. (OK some new money assholes do, but they’re not “cultured”.)So, snotty retail trash, get over it, be nice, make some sales, and go back to your cheap rental unit with your three roommates, and see if you can scrape enough cash up to go prance around Bubble’s Mansion pretending you’re a somebody in your faux-designer duds from three years ago.
I am so with you Jammie Wammie… I don’t understand why people who wait on wealthy people put themselves in the same bracket. It’s weird.
Yeah I mean I understand why people do things like that – they want to give the impression of wealth, because they want people to think they are wealthy. They want their apparent wealth to help people to like and accept them. But they really just make themselves stand out as jerks. And so people don’t like or accept them. It’s so counterproductive.Dr. Phil
