Fuck you to the loser with no life who has nothing better to do than to call the city because my grass is too high. I loved that tall grass, I felt like I was in the country, I should be allowed to grow my backyard anyway I want. Again, get a fucking life loser. —Grass lover

  1. yeah, but then you have to deal with all the fucking leprechauns.
they’re always so nervous and panicky cause they think we’re out to get their lucky charms.

  2. we have lots o clover in the yardage. why would someone complain? my neighbours never bitch, they think i have trained corbies…i less than three garden gnomes too rc

  3. I have a garden gnome, RC. I named him “Steve Murphy” because someone with the same name reminds me of a garden gnome. I call him Gnomey.

  4. you’re our favourite gnome miss newt…captain crunch would turn the milk into a strange pink syrup. gack

  5. yeah o.p., but it could be a hiding and breeding place for those damnablr terrorists that everyone keeps thinking will pop up anywhere, and everywhere, oh, there goes one now, hey osama, just a sec……

  6. OP, you buy a house, you also have to deal with the responsibilities that go along with owning that house. You can’t have a crappy looking mess of a yard while all those around you are mowing and gardening and keeping things nice. You want tall grass, move to the country where your nearest neighbour can’t see your unsightly lawn.

  7. I happen to like natural yards. Herbicided, manicured lawns may be the standard but that doesn’t mean they are environmentally friendly. We should have the freedom to choose what style of landscaping we want to maintain on property we happen to own. Otherwise why not just live in an apartment where there are no choices either?

  8. OP, you buy a house, you also have to deal with the responsibilities that go along with owning that house. Complete bullshit, it’s his crib! He can do whatever the fuck he wants with it. The fact that there’s a law that says you have to have short grass disgusts me.

  9. its all about guilty by association…kind of ..one lazy dirty fucktard can lower the value of the peoperties around his. Nobody wants to buy a house next to a neighbor that doesnt appear to take care of his property. Unmowed lawn, paint job needed etc etc…these are things that devalue the neighborhood as a whole. Thats why you have a homeowners responsibility via the by-laws. just like the rest of us do and always have had. You dont like it…rent! I wouldnt let you devalue my property either…

  10. Geurilla Funk- it must be nice to live in your own little world where what you want is all that matters. However, out here in the real world it is completely different. The reason by-laws had to be created for this kind of thing is for idiots like you that think you can do whatever you want and to hell with anyone else. What shaker542 said is true, I’m not having my property values decreased because someone else thinks having a hayfield in their yard is nice. I’m not saying everyone should do the herbicide/manicured perfect lawn, but mowing it a couple times a summer would be good.

Check out the Bitch below about rude/angry people, you belong in that crowd. Rudeness due to self-centredness seems to be all too common these days.

  11. OP…. neighbor wants you to cut your grass… you could always buy a couple of goats. That will not only make you feel more like you’re in the country, but your grass will have that “pasture” look AND you can train them to HEE-HAW violently at your neighbor every time they see him. Perfect revenge!

  12. PG…. that was the whole point behind training them to hee-haw. It would certainly be a lot more annoying than whatever sound goats really make… a bleat? a neah?? i don’t really know.

  13. i know donkeys make good guard beasts…fainting goats are sadly funny but my bluejay babies make really irritating noises. i just googled goat sounds…neato

  14. Tall grass will devalue a property? Where the fuck are you from Shaker? It certainly isn’t Halifax, where the “property valuation services” takes last year’s assessment and macros Excel to multiply it by 1.10 (10% increase) for the next year’s “market value” even though there is/was a recession. If the house next door is a shithole, then it might affect your property, but tall grass, no, well not unless it grows taller than the house I suppose.

    The leprechaun comments: hilarious!

  15. It devalues the property from a potential home buyer’s perspective. If the neighbour of an unsightly property is trying to sell their house, prospective buyers will also look at the neighbours surrounding the house, not just the property they’re interested in buying. If the neighbours places looks terrible, from the point of view of garbage in the yard, unsightly lawns, peeling paint, etc, then either the buyer will want a decrease in the asking price, or simply forego buying altogether and head for a better looking area. So, the seller loses a sale because of their nasty neighbour.

  16. Manicured lawns will go down as being one of the silliest things urbanization has caused.
You manufacture a 30-40lb metal machine to burn petro to cut the grass, pour water on it, and use dangerous chemicals to fertilize and reduce pests.
It is about as environmentally unsustainable as it comes.

But you behind your perfect green lawn are concerned about the environment right? you even recycle your pop cans too…..pft.

    Walter

  17. OP not to worry. The enforcement of bylaws of this kind will soon fall by the wayside as we collectively slide down the backside of Hubbert’s Peak. Your neighbours will be digging up their manicured lawns and growing as much veg as they possibly can. Your long grass will become a welcome community pasture for the above-mentioned goats. And in the very near future, perhaps next spring, you may even have the pleasure of owning a few backyard laying hens to supply you with fresh eggs every day!

These are not the (crack-) pipe dreams of a some superannuated hippie or a crazed “guns and gold” survivalist. These visions are the shape of things to come. We are on the cusp of an event unprecedented in human history. In the last 150 years or so, we have seen a world created largely by the consumption of a limited and one-time endowment of cheap fossil fuels. As a result, we have overshot the carrying capacity of this planet. The relatively cheap energy sources that have fueled the rise of a global economy are from now on going to become more scarce with each passing year, and there is no other option in existence that will keep over 6 billion souls alive on this planet, and no energy source on the horizon that will meet the world’s present and future needs.

Just to add insult to injury, the rapid consumption of this fossil fuel resource in the last 150 years has already bequeathed to the atmosphere (and to future generations) a ‘gift’ of climate changing CO2 that cannot be taken back. Collectively we have let the opportunity to do something about it slip from our grasp. We are indeed headed for very challenging times. Many of us (meaning our descendants) will not survive past the middle of this century as the twin impacts of climate change and fossil fuel scarcity make themselves felt on the global food supply.

    That’s the bad news.

But there is good news. With the coming collapse of the global economy, we will also see disintegration of the corporations which currently rule the world, either as they break up into progressively smaller business units more aligned to relocalized economies, or as they disappear altogether. Much of the consumer driven economy will disappear also. Manufactured items, if they are still produced, will just be too expensive for people to be willing to buy them, ie there will be limited or no markets for much of the crap that currently fills up our lives, because most of us will be expending most of our energy in securing the necessities of life.

As the scale of life becomes smaller and more localized, we will find that we have more power as citizens (of whatever civic structure remains) to make our voices heard. Gone will be the days when some bureaucrat in an office (government or corporate) thousands of miles away makes a decision that fucks up the life of your community. No. Those that make the decisions in the future will be much closer to home and well within reach of an angry and motivated citizenry if they make bad decisions.

Most people will lose weight and become healthier without even trying. There will be two main reasons for this. First, with energy becoming more expensive, our lives will be less automated and we’ll be doing more for ourselves – like walking around instead of driving and doing more physical work than many of us are used to. Second, the collapsing global agribusiness sector will no longer be providing us will crap processed food. Those of us who have grown fat on additives like high fructose corn syrup, like steers in a feed lot, will find ourselves losing weight as our food choices become, out of necessity, more local and less processed.

Maybe the good will outweigh the bad. I don’t know.

When the time comes, I will be walking my goats to the Dartmouth Commons for daily grazing. Maybe I’ll see you there!

  18. Addendum:

I didn’t mean to sound flippant about the possibility of a global collapse.

Of course, the die off of most of the world’s human population due to starvation will be tragic beyond words. To suggest that decluttering our lives of consumer crap and losing weight are ‘good’ outcomes that might outweigh people starving to death is making light of what will truly be a human disaster of epic proportions.

  19. what’s the egg yield on a single hen?
can I get an omelet out of one or two of the birds every day?

    nothing quite like fresh eggs….
    that deep yellow yolky goodness.

  20. 3 to 5 backyard hens will keep you in enough eggs for your daily needs.

A Nubian goat can yield up to a gallon of milk each day.

Also in the same vein of self-sufficiency, as the Highland Scots found out centuries ago, if you keep a few sheep, you’ll never want for female companionship.

  21. watch it me laddies, you don’t want me to go all celtic on ya. nae nae painey put that sgian dubh down…up the scots down with the english queen and the feckin pope too…grrrrr

  22. *mouse ears* rebellious Scots lasses. In the British Army, Highlanders and Gurkhas always got along well together. The Gurkhas even adopted the bagpipes for their regimental bands.

  23. merci general…the pope has got me all riled up again. horns retracting *snort* arrest the pope

  24. What’s that little scamp done now? Re-enacting the Spanish Armada, or perhaps Operation SeaLion.” Look Mein Fuhrer, I invaded England – Why couldn’t you?” I say we send Zombie Sir Francis Drake out to plunder his shipping. Bloody papists! Rawk!

(Yes, I harbor a secret desire to be the Bernard Cornwell of zombie techno-thrillers.)

  25. I used to have a manicured 2 & a half acre lawn. It came withthe house when I bought it. It had manicured trimmed driveway edging !
After a couple of weeks my first summer I decided life’s TOO SHORT to devote half a day of longer each week to care for a stupid idea in the first place. So I mow a 20ish foot border around the house, a bit further on the road side & the rest I let go Au Natural . I have pheasants down in the long grass by the river, I planted a bunch of different perenial wild flower mix, I see deer by the river all the time, the amount of differnet small birds & hummers I see is great. Once gas hits $8.00 a gallon grass mowing will be a thing of the past !
Ahhhh, country living…you can mow or not mow & no one gives a shit !

  26. My place came with a huge hedge. When I finally clued in that no one can see my front lawn I stopped mowing it. I do the back because thats where I spend my time when laying around the deck, which isn’t much but it is nice to see. I think we’re going to turn the entire front yard into a garden anyway, hope there isn’t a by-law against that.

  27. At my country home I mow my yard with one of those push type mowers that require human effort, not gas or electricity. They are easier to manoever than the gas/electric types and friendly to the environment. I laugh at all the big, strong men who have to use power mowers to cut their little patch of city lawn! What a joke!

  28. Just tell that fat little ugly by-law lady to ‘PISS OFF’.
No by-law applies to the length of your grass. HRM Nazis think the Dangerous and Unsightly Premises applies in this case but HRM has a very broad interpretation that will not stand up in court. Long grass is not dangerous and it is nor unsightly.
What is the definition of ‘unsightly’ in the context of the legislation ?

  29. Are you sure about that? The fat little ugly by-law lady may actually have a leg to stand on, if you read the by-law…

    From said by-law:

“The owner of a property shall not permit any grass, bush or hedge on the property to become unsightly in relation to neighbouring properties. Where a property is […] unsightly, council, or a standing committee to which this function has been delegated by administrative order, may cause an order to be served to the owner requiring that the condition be remedied […] and specifying in that order what is required to be done.”

  30. I was talking to my family about this …they live in the Darkside.
Dad said that happened to a guy up the street, he hadn’t mowed his lawn all summer & the by-law people were threatening him to take him to court.
He went and removed the grass to the bare ground !!
Dug up his whole front yard L O L

LMFAO… I had seen that home a couple of times & seen that the lawn had been removed & it was bare dirt, but I just thought he was getting a new lawn or having a garden put in.

So it seems like you don’t have to mow the lawn…. if you don’t have one !
Now that’s gotta be fucking with the neighbors ‘eh .

  31. More,

Maybe that guy who removed his lawn is getting ready to plant vegetables, in which case he is a visionary AND successfully fucking with the neighbours.

  32. Comm———–, I suppose so.
As someone who likes to dabble witha garden each year….I always wait until August to get started ~;p
But as to your comment about “fucking with the neighbors” oh yeah, THat’s exactly what he’s doing, but it isn’t illegal nor is there a by-law I’ve ever heard of saying you cannot dig up your yard.
If I was him I would asphault it & paint it blue !
