I am sick of seeing cigarette butts all over the place. Bus stops are the worst.. and lots of stops have a garbage bin. There was a guy going around one of the bus terminals sweeping up butts and his bin was already pretty full and at least 20 butts I could see still on the pavement. Not to mention the two people smoking a cigarette when there bus arrives and all they did was throw what ever was left out into the road in front of the bus. Just because everyone else throws their cigarette butts on the ground doesn’t mean everyone should. Take two seconds to throw it in a garbage can if there is one close. —Annoyed

Completely agree. I am a smoker and it infuriates me to see people throwing their butts out car windows while driving. You wouldn’t toss your McDonald’s bag out the window.
Add chewing gum to the ‘unnecessary littering’ list too.
Cigarette butts and Tim cups – the rolling landscape of Barrington Street.
Yes because flaming trash cans are a better alternative. Until smoking is completely illegal in public you’re going to find butts all over the damn place. Sucks.
Cigarette butts DO NOT go in the trash cans. Like madeinthe80s said, you just end up with a flaming trash can/dumpster fire.
I’m thinking of the Dartmouth bus terminal when I say this – what’s needed are more designated smoking areas with several butt-cans:

And some sort of enforcement.
I’ve seen people throw bags of McD garbage out of car windows, so dont underestimate the assholes in this city
even if there was food in the mcdink bags, it won’t rot
Of course this has been brought about by banning smoking indoors where there were ashtrays. Come to think about it ashtrays were a part of the public garbage cans at one time.
i remember the sand ashtrays in airports
With the snow starting to melt the butts will start to come out of hiding.
wait a minute. Garbage cans in public? where?
and dog poo and cadavers j/k
Back when I smoked I would tear off the last of the tobacco and scatter it and then throw the filter in the garbage. Maybe when the filters were made of cotton and biodegradable products it was alright to toss them to the side, not anymore.
Might be a good side gig for a bi-law enforcement officer to hang out at the bus stop and collect fees for littering 😉
When I read the title “butts everywhere” I must admit, I was intrigued. But then I was disappointed in quick succession.
The government wants to rake in the financial profits from tobacco sales yet, simultaneously, they force smokers to the sidewalks with no suitable place to dispose of their butts. They won’t put ashtrays anywhere out of fear of ‘enabling’ smokers, but they depend on the gazillions of tax dollars generated by tobacco sales annually. Things that make you go “hmmmmmm”

RIP Stompin’ Tom Connors.
NurseHezz hit the nail, give us an alternative, or as they say, GFYS
I’ve often wondered about the stats re: tobacco taxes… I mean, if smoking was banned… wouldn’t we have less incidences of smoking-related illnesses that eat up health care dollars?
Of course we’d have black market smokes being sold… but if we could somehow cut funding to all smoking-related illnesses, would we cancel out the loss of revenue from tobacco taxes?
Just a random thought.
Also: Isn’t smoking technically banned from bus stops and terminals? The city could make a mint off of sending by-law enforcement out a couple days a month to hand out tickets. Wonder if the transit union would make a stink about that since their drivers are often one of the smoking perps at terminals and such.
And the whole ‘poor smokers can’t do this or that or whatever and inconvenience people who didn’t pick up this dirty filthy habit because a smoker’s ‘right’ to smoke is oh so much more important than a human’s right to breathe clean air’ argument is just ridiculous. ‘Smoker’s rights’ is laughable. Oooh you pay a lot of taxes? Cry me a fucking river… how much does it cost to treat ONE person with lung cancer they developed from smoking? how much does it cost to treat a smoker that’s developed CPOD from their smoking? I’d be very surprised if that shit doesn’t at least even itself out.
I’m a smoker but I butt out my cigarette and throw it in the garbage. I also smoke away from people and doors. There’s no reason why we should make others suffer because of our own addictions and choices.
Right on, Naveed! You rock my socks off.
It’s the ‘SMOKERS RIGHTS TRUMP ALL OMGOMGOMG” smokers that give y’all a bad name. I know lots of people who smoke, but they don’t infringe on the rights of non-smokers to breathe clean air.
Vastie… that’s some phallic looking solution you have there…
I`m the original person who posted this. I`m happy people feel the same.. but I wouldn`t suggest anyone put a cigg in the garbage can thats still burning.. butt it out and then trow it out.
Hello PK… Agreed, banning tobacco and tobacco products would decrease the incidence of smoking-related illnesses, thus, decreasing costs allotted to treat these illnesses. The problem is, there would be a gap (probably decades) between the tobacco ban and the health care savings. The economy would virtually sink before the savings in smoking-related illness treatment showed significance. If there wAs a way to fill that ‘gap’, I’m sure they would be off the shelves. The harsh truth is, the governments NEEDS smokers, but want them to Di it quietly, hidden away from the public eye. They carry out all sorts of BS smoking cessation and smoking ‘deterrent’ strategies under immense pressure from heart and lung associations, etc. They know smoking kills, they know nicotine is extremely addictive, yet they won’t ban it’s use. Not only do they not ban it’s use, they reap the benefits. It’s a multibillion dollar industry, and the government is a key stakeholder.
Holy typo, my thumbs run amok! Lol
nothing worse than amok-y thumbs!
zZz…lol…no more phallic than sucking on the end of a long, round tube (of tobacco) 😉
And they already use these butt cans at the Dartmouth bus terminal, (2, I think), but they need to put a shitload more out by the state of the grounds outside the building.
(Hee Hee! I said “butt”…..AND “can”!)
I could easily make the brit joke here but I’m not about the easy pot-shots….
btw, you also said ‘shitload’. Are you an assman?
http://api.ning.com/files/u*anJIEAgcME40Hm…
Well, except for the “shitload” part of the comment….
I like ’em. I cannot lie.
You other brothers can’t deny
boru, i played stompin tom at the shop today. great memories of road trips
Tobacco companies should make filters out of eucalyptus so when the flame gets to it, the filter melts into chewing gum. They then get rid of smoker’s breath. Win win.
Lol nice one Reg
Yeah, but then you’d be constantly swarmed by the stray street koalas.
Little buggers are EVERYWHERE!
Tabacco tasting gum? I don’t think that would go over so well.
Maybe the menthols…
They could always rest them on a ledge, planter, or lamp post because if it’s not touching the ground apparently it’s not littering -_-
My inner pyromaniac agrees with the op. Garbage fires are awesome.
Op, throwing a recently extinguished cigarette butt into the garbage is a moronic idea.
