For a while now, I have been shaking my head every time I walk through the parking lot of a major grocery store on Joseph Howe Drive as I see so many company vehicles sitting in parking spots with their engines running. These are well know businesses in Nova Scotia as the signage is on the vehicle. I’m not just talking about an engine running for a few minutes but for the whole time I spend shopping for groceries. It still boggles me when I walk out of the store that the vehicles are still running. It disgusts me at how much gas is being wasted let alone the carbons being emitted into the air. Business owners, if you are experiencing sky rocketing gas usage, I think it would be wise to take a drive through that specific parking lot one day. Who knows you may just see where a lot your profits are going. —Concerned Citizen

  1. The energy efficiency depends on how long they’re idling.

Under a certain period of time (and i forget exactly what that number is off the top of my head) it is actually more energy efficient to leave them running.

  2. wtf?
I thought this was for the stupidstore… but I frequent this place all the time and have yet to ever see what (C)OP is describing

  3. Eats_crayons — that’s a myth. Anything over 9 seconds is a waste of gas/energy.

  4. Bullshit, OB. What you witnessed was probably an isolated incident, not the general rule. That’s where you granola dumbasses make your biggest mistake, trying to get your point across by making sweeping generalizations and exaggerating to the extreme.

  5. OB, are you talking about temperature controlled delivery trucks? If so, you’re probably not hearing the truck’s engine running but the separate refer unit on the truck box/trailer. These are diesel powered and operate separately from the vehicles engine. If they turn the refers off, then your dairy/produce/meat/frozen food spoils.

  6. PK it’s been awhile since i heard this.. but are you sure? Now i have to google..
