So I drive an SUV. Everywhere! But… my friend takes the bus to work, home, shopping, everywhere. I swore I would never use public transportation. Why? I own a vehicle. Why? I can afford the fuel. Why? My vehicle LOVES eating fossil fuel and belching carcinogens into the atmosphere. So my friend approaches me about going shopping and taking the Bayers Lake bus up to Bayers Lake and do walking and shopping there. “Leave the truck home and save fuel” she said. Guilt getting the better of me… I accepted. Then waited at the bus stop with half the people around and in the shelter smoking. Then got on the bus… it’s free right now… awesome! But nobody is moving towards the back. There are people hanging on the rail in the front of the bus, the woman in front of me carries her full backpack on her back, and stops two steps into the bus. Somebody else is next to her, somebody behind that lady too. Back of the bus? Lots of room… nobody moves. I say “Can a few people move towards the back so we can get on here? Ma’am could you drop your bag off your back so people can get past you? Nothing happens… except the bus starts rolling… people are falling into each other, bus driver didn’t say a word… not “people please move back.” or anything. Nothing! I felt like I was on a transport to a death camp. The very next stop… I tell my friend…. who is still on the platform of the front of the bus… “Let’s go. I am not doing this.” and we get off. A $4000.00 bonus for signing? You don’t ask people to move back so others can get on? Pull away when you know it isn’t safe? I am keeping on driving in my gas guzzling, comfortable, safe, four wheel drive, full size SUV thank you very much. I feel bad for those who must use this public transportation. —Tried

  1. You sheltered sap. Hobnobbing with the hoi paloi SOUNDS like a lark, but in practice, it’s hard to get strangers to realize just who the fuck they are talking to, am I right? Fart noise.

  2. Feh. Even if I took the bus to work every day, I’d still drive to the mall—what if you end up with a lot of packages?
Plus, a weekend bus to the mall is probably a different crowd than on the bus you don’t take to work.

  3. Comparing the bus as transport to a death camp ……. nice one ya fuck …….. hmmmm, I’ve got your number and it is a blocked call.

  4. Crayons… “Don’t feel bad for us. We’re tougher than you are.”
    Tougher? that’s debatable.
    Poorer? Definitely.

  5. I agree with this bitch. If the city really wanted less cars on the road they would make significant improvements to the transit system. Unless you live downtown, Halifax sucks without a car.

  6. Ah, OB.. now you know some of the joys of riding the bus.
Many bus drivers will tell people to move on back but some don’t care..

If people don’t move even after I say excuse me, I usually just push past them while saying “excuse me! excuse me!”. If they don’t want to move, I can’t make them, but I can push through them so I can get myself to safety… and I can get ready to sit on someone’s stuff if they’re taking up the only empty seat, and they always move it 🙂

  7. good for you o.p., that’ll learn em, eh. yeah, keep the beast, and get rid of all the hassles of the rest of the masses.i missed driving for the last could yearss, and decided this wasn’t gonna be another one, it isn’t. fuck the buses, if you got a car, use it.

  8. Tried a little slumming did you OP? Now you’re back in the womb of your gas-guzzling SUV. Always nice to have people that get out there and make a difference.

  9. Well I appreciate your comments. As far as the “I got your number and it’s a blocked call.”comment… that’s just creepy man. Perhaps some psychotherapy is in order…a little on the overboard side there friend… never the less… probably a non bag dropper. But hey… I hold no grudges…you can call anytime… I love speaking with people. Especially on my iPhone… which now I think I possibly may have fallen for a cleverly disguised marketing scheme. 😉

  10. Grow some balls OB say excuse me and push through the people. It’s not as easy to pretend you’re a big man when you don’t have your big SUV encasement on, lol. How the fuck would you survive in a real city? Go back to honky tonk world

  11. The funniest part about the whole transit system and transit strike?? Are you ready… It made F. All of a difference to traffic in the city. If anything, traffic was better during the strike. I take Windsor/ Bayers rd around 3pm, my usual drive while the busses operate, the traffic is backed up to Young every afternoon. No busses on the road, smooth sailing directly through. Sorry to say to the tree huggers but it is evident 90% of Halifax aren’t taking transit for environment reason, they are taking transit because they dont have an F’in choice and cannot afford a car. The transit system isabsolutely useless in Halifax but than again, so are the roads.
