I know why this city fails to move on anything for at least 10 – 15 years. Because there are always people who have some ridiculous excuse or reason as to why they think it is a bad idea. Instead of weighing the pros and cons, they focus on the cons. And the rest of us actually sit and listen patiently, politely as Canadians do, so nothing happens. No progress is made. Buildings on Barrington street sit and rot. To those constant complainers: CHANGE is GOOD people! It will allow the city to grow and develop and flourish into its potential. Instead of sit in its own stagnant filth because some people prefer it that way than to ever take a chance on a new idea. —Halifaxed-Off

  1. well o.p., if change is good, then move the fuck away. seems that thse that are here, like it just fine, the way it is. change is not always good. remember the access move, the buses will be moving soon too. anytime this city does something for the better, it always winds up fucking things up. look at chebucto road, the rotary, the games center, the oval. those that like change, don’t really care what the rest think, and are the harpies of the future. and dictators have a way of being overthrown.

  2. And will someone please open a 24 hour store in one of those empty Barrington storefronts. Halifax is probably the only self proclaimed “world class” city without one you can walk to downtown. Smoke and lottery tickets after 11PM on Saturday night alone would make it worthwhile.

  3. You’re right op, change is needed. But the kind of change where the building owner on Barrington can’t let some of Canada’s (yeah I said it) most historic buildings rot away, b/c the change would come in the form of by-laws protecting those buildings. It’s not like businesses don’t want to be in them, trust me they do. It’s that the owners jacking the fuck out of the rent price make it so that no business in their right mind rents it…then it sits there and rots. Well of course the next plan of action is to tear it down then. “But it’s a heritage building” some will argue…easy enough for the owner…wait 1 year and then destroy it legally b/c of a dodgy by-law in place now. So yes op, change is good, if done properly.

  4. Halifax is content to stay in the dark ages. God forbid we tear down some shit ass old building and replace it with a gleaming, well designed building. Even the new buildings they put up all lack originality. Other cities have a nice mix, why can’t Halifax? Maybe if we wait for all the old people to die off (shouldn’t be too much longer), then we can bulldoze.

  5. We could always remove that moldy old fort up on the hill.
Look at what a view you’d have if they put a huge condo 50 stories tall up there !

  6. It’s ok Op most of the people that are complaining about any proposed changes in the city will soon start dying off anyway. Then hopefully we will see this city start to grow to it’s full potential.

  7. Seriously…someone wants to build a 10-storey apartment building on an ugly empty lot and people go apeshit…

but if a sleazy developer wants to put up 100 more acres of parking lot Walmartmania in Dartmouth Crossing or w/e, killing the downtown, killing the forest, making it totally car-reliant with the cheapest possible design…no peep from anyone.
