I have gone to both college and university and I have pounded the pavement for jobs. I have been underemployed, underpaid and living at my parents house forever. I’m so sick of it. What happened to the ‘go to school, get a good job and succeed’ story? I have heard many of these same stories. Why isn’t the government doing something about it? If there aren’t any jobs out there shouldn’t the people know? We just keep signing up to be broke. No wonder they bring immigrants in because the people who grew up here keep leaving. It’s not the governments job to advise you on what academic path to take, nor is it their job to create employment. When you were preparing for a secondary education, perhaps a little research into job availabity might have top of your list. University has never been a place to learn specific job skills, this would be a trade school or a community college. Don’t lay blame on the government for your poor career choices, they aren’t career councilors or baby sitters.
Take twenty minutes to google potential jobs in a certain field regarding the pay and availability, especially in your own province. It’s what I did whenever thinking about giving over my money to a school and have changed my decision a few times now. That’s all it takes you lazy bum!
One of the biggest lies of the last 50 years is the “get a degree, run Microsoft” horseshit they shove down your throat. In other words> Get a degree and work for someone else until they decide their fucktard kid needs a job…
Start a biz. Be your own boss.
“Why isn’t the government doing something about it?” – WTF!!!??? You want a bigger Nanny State? What if the Government told you to take a job you didn’t want to do, then you’d bitch about them beig fascist.
Grow up and take some responsibility for yourself.
You fucking big whiner. Get off your ass and pound that pavement some more, ya pussy. The government isn’t responsible for wiping your ass and the immigrants aren’t taking your potential jobs – you are obviously not selling yourself very well to a future employer. Get some people skills, bone brain.
If you have college and university, then you should be qualified to be underpaid, so go out there and get a job that doesn’t pay enough.
Then, once you have some experience and some real skills, go get a job that pays you properly.
IT all depends on what you take in school. I know people with BAs in English who think they’re qualified to run large corporations.
Yano.
Temp agencies, OP. Give ’em a shot.

Maybe you’re still living at home and looking for work because you have the personality of a wet plank?
Ever hear of minimum wage, and cleaning jobs.Ther are a ton out there, if you really want money, to whatever.
Wow. Way to blame everybody but yourself. Lemme guess, you studied philosophy? No.. theatre arts. It was theatre arts wasn’t it?
I was talented and lazy. I didn’t even graduate and i’m working in the top of my field right now. There are jobs. If you’re smart.
It seems to me.. and i hate to say this because it’s gonna piss you off.. you are still clinging to a wee bit of that obnoxious pretension the average (and i stress AVERAGE) university student has about their own stellar talent and ability.. Each and every university student out there fancies themselves a tortured, delicate genius who, with the right guidance, will be discovered as surely as they piss away their tuition studying something fun and useless.
I’m going to bet your entire student loan you went into a field that only a wunderkind could succeed in. Am i right? One of those fields where only the truly talented ever really make something out of the education they get. And you figured you’d be one of them. And now you’re not. And, hey, it can’t be you. You’re certainly not lazy (you’ve pounded the pavement!) and you can’t POSSIBLY be mediocre or even bad at what you do because you chose something you’re better at than everyone else. So it’s the government’s fault right?
lol. Wrong.
Do yourself a favour, OP. Get a portfolio of your work out there. Create wordpress blogs filled with things that you’ve done. Spend 8 hours a day working on finding a job as if you already have one. And maybe… MAYBE.. you’ll be given a chance. If you’re NOT a wunderkind (And let’s face it. You’re not or they’d be after you handing you work) you gotta work hard. So start working hard.
There are jobs out there. Maybe your college and university education is not in demand or not marketable. Maybe you perform poorly at interviews, or you just don’t have the right connections through networking. Instead of blaming others, look at yourself.
Apply to shitty red circle security company. They’re so desperate because of high turnover they call you back the same damn day.
Where are you looking for jobs? Check Indeed and careerbeacon.com. If you grew up here, you must have some connections. Ask your parents’ friends for an informational interview. As your last question, ask: can you think of anywhere I should apply for a job? Hit the bricks, find the companies you want to work for and offer to do an internship.
Get off the dang computer and get yo’self a job.
University does not equal success.
That might be somewhat true in some circumstances, but to break that glass ceiling, one usually ends up getting a degree.
You can only go so far these days without a degree.
If you want to make 40k the rest of your life (which is good to those without education), fine, but those who are making 80, 80, 100k+ usually have a degree.
I wish I made 80… or even 80… but I’d settle for 80.
I suggest you use some of the smarts that got you through college and university and figure the job market out.
Here’s a hint: people tend to get hired based on their past 5 years of experience, so don’t get caught sitting around doing nothing, its worse than being under employed.
I’ll admit I didn’t read all of the comments. If no one has said this already then listen closely… GET ANY jOB!
Future employers want to know that you have the capacity to hold down a job.
This is the reason why I have a better paying job than a lot of my friend who went to University.
You need REAL experience and it doesn’t matter where.
The people who gave me the “go to school, get a good job and succeed” story had never been to post-secondary institutions (didn’t even finish high school) and are better off than I will ever be because they don’t have student debt.
there is some truth to that…
student debt can be quite crippling for the majority of students.
when your loan payments are as much (if not more) than rent…
it can feel like quite the pit you’re trying to dig yourself out of.
University= greater income. True, but requires qualification. Uni grads may simply have greater aspirations for wealth rather than more talent/skill than those who don’t attend university. There’s not necessarily a causal link (ie get degree, then earn more).
Kids need to stop being routed into the university system. Take a look at the jobs and skills that are in demand and choose your path accordingly. Don’t discount community college. Also student loans should be conditional on attending programs that produce skills that are expected to be in high demand over the foreseeable future (e.g. nurses).
And, quite honestly, the main advantage of not going to university is foregoing student loans, which basically indenture you to the wage slave economy we have.
I hate to sound like a recrutement ad, but…
The Canadian Military pays for your education and training, plus you get a salary while going to school.
I met a young electronics engineer last year, he’s gotten several job offers, and he hasn’t even finished his degree yet.
If your government can’t put you to work, WORK FOR THE GOVERNMENT; why don’t you consider running for city council so maybe we can get some developments that will encourage and support employment in your field? Maybe give investors, small business owners, and companies a reason to open up shop here. Idiot. The government won’t do shit for you; the government IS you, so get off your ass and do something about it.
Just because you went to college & university doesn’t mean you deserve a job, nor does it mean you are qualified for one. Don’t shit on immigrants who come here and do the jobs you don’t want to. Its not the responsibility of the government to find you a job. Get over it you lazy shit.
