Why is it so expensive for a hair cut? I went in and got my hair trimmed with a #2, it honestly took about 4 minutes including the time it took to ring it through the cash. The final price was $17.24. So basically at that price it works out the same as $258.60/hour. People please help me out, where is the cheapest place to get my hair cut in this city? P.S. I’m not going to cut it myself, I don’t want patches of uncut hair like all you “do it yourself”ers. —Shorter Hair, Emptier Wallet

  1. $17 seems pretty cheap for a cut to me, I’m used to paying $35 plus tip. If you’re not willing to do it yourself, I think you’re likely SOL.

  2. You could always go “Occupy” a TopCuts as part of a grass-roots, non-violent movement demanding social justice and corporate responsibility from Aesthetic-Industrial complex.
    *Hint* Don’t forget yout iphone >: )

  3. considering the price of two hair cuts would pay for your own set of clippers…
    you’re only shafting yourself.
you do own a mirror or two, don’t ya?
it’s not that hard to see and feel if you’ve missed a spot…
and after a few cuts, you’d be used to it anyways.

you’re paying through the nose for your own stubbornness.

  4. You either suck it up or you buy your own clippers. Unless you’re fucking blind (in which case congrats for getting to LTWWB and posting), you should be able to spot patches. Or here’s an idea, get someone to do it for you (g/f or fwb?).

  5. Seriously? That’s facepalm-worthy. Dude, just get a clipper already…it really ain’t rocket surgery. Heck, if you don’t want to do it yourself, ask your (pick one) girlfriend/brother/roomate/friend/neighbour/pizza delivery guy to do it for you.

  6. Do what folks used to do, for most things at one time – call around and compare prices. Check out the good old yellow pages. Many barbers listed in there. There are still some cheaper places around town, especially on the Dartmouth side of the harbour. Or, as others have said, on to the clippers and mirror act.

  7. Dear OB…well first dere’s the rent or mortgage on the shop.
I happen to know clippers & a # 2 comb are not passed out for free anywhere in this part of the world.
Then you need a chair to sit you up in, cleaners & a UV unit.
All this stuff costs money, which is why your hair cut wasn’t for a portion of minimum wage…did you possibly take into consideration the cost for whomever cut your hairs, training & licensing costs ~:o

  8. They charge by the hour for a haircut now?
(Bitch not going the way you hoped it would, huh?) 🙂

You know i love you, Ivan?
    That was beautiful. Thx!

  9. Of course I do, my elegantly scented brother. That was homage cuz I love your material and your style. Rawk on WingCo. >: )

  10. I pay way more than that, at least 25-30 with a tip. I figure that’s not bad considering they wash, cut, style and give me one of those awsome head massages. Get fucking bent you cheap ass, if you don’t want to cut your own hair I guess you have to pay what the pros ask for.

PS; I hear they cut your hair for free in tatamagouche, walkins only.

  11. whatever… a man with long, layered hair pays less for a haircut than a woman with short, basic hair.

    Top that.

  12. And, sexist pricing structure aside, it doesn’t work out to 258/hr.. Are you considering the cost of keeping the salon open? Or the cost of the equipment or bills or location venue?

    Srsly now!

I don’t think anything under 20 bucks is expensive. But if you do, i suggest hitting a barber shop. The haircuts are much more utilitarian but you’ll pay about ten bucks max for them.

  13. Like most services, you are paying for the knowledge and skill. A surgeon can do a 10 minute procedure that will cost thousands of dollars. Also the barbers (as well as others) have work expenses and have to charge enough to not only pay for those but to make enough to live on. Also they could have 20 slients a day or none. There is no consistancy.

  14. Try one of the hair dressing schools.

But beware: you might end up going back multiple times to have them fix it and THEN end up burning your scalp off when you finally give up and call the clairol line in tears and fix it for good yourself.

  15. OB, just be happy you’re not one of those loser bald dudes in the city. $17 is nothing. Plus you get what you pay for….in your case, 4 minutes of a trimmer.

  16. Here’s an idea OP. First of all, no haircut should take 4 minutes. If you buzz your hair, just buy the clippers, do it yourself and then just go to a barber shop and pay $5 for a touch up, or a line up.

If you go to Showcase on Spring Garden and Robie they won’t charge you much more than what you’re paying now but I’ll tell you right now it’s much better haircut. I would also suggest that you tell your hairdresser (I’m sure they’re not barbers) that you’re gonna need them to be more thorough, because even a buzz cut takes more than 4 minutes. 20 minutes minimum.

If you’re in Dartmouth I recommend Matt’s Barbershop on Windmill. Fademasters in Fairview is great too and Catch a Look in Sackville, from what I hear, is great too. You’re not really overpaying but you’re getting shitty service. 17.50 isn’t that much for a haircut these days. First choice and topcuts don’t deserve your business, neither do hair salons, from my experience. Huge rip off if you’re a guy.

  17. that’s what happens when you are an idiot. go to a fucking barber o.p., not one of these high priced stupid fucking hair stylist joints. most barbers can do just as good on a females mane, as a guy’s. the one in fairview at bayer’s road shopping center gets all my business.the starlight barbershop. check it out next time, you might be pleasantly surprisedby them. and by the way, you don’t need buckets of gooey shit in your hair, to look nice.
anyone who spends that kind of cash, like you did, is obviously mental.

  18. My wife and I cut our own hair using cilppers. Saves a lot of money. Sebastard would tell you to purchase your own hair salon.

  19. All this talk of haircuts makes me thankful for my long and naturally curly locks. Any other style is just way too much effort for me. Just needs a trim once or twice a year by my sister.

If you don’t want to buy clippers and do it yourself … your cheapest is either TopCuts or a barber shop … or just say ‘fuck it’ and let it grow.

  20. “fuck it, let it grow” works for me. tho i’m frugal and don’t like people touching my head

  21. Hugo … um, no … not so much in the Frieda category (but that made me chuckle).

This category is a little more fitting … 😉

PG … I don’t like people messing with my head/hair either … and I also refuse to spend a fortune or invest the time in trying to make my hair do anything other than what it wants to do all by itself.
