Dear beach-goers and residents of Cole Harbour and Lawrencetown: Please direct your attention to the speed signs on Portland Street as you proceed uphill. It makes absolutely no sense to me why they would make you putt along at 50km/hr as you climb Heartbreak Hill (there is a reason it has such a harsh and unforgiving name). What’s nonsensical is the sign that reads 60km/hr at the top of the hill near the crescent. Not only should you be slowing down because of the crescent, you are also now entering a residential/ small commercial area. Instead, it speeds up as you are beginning a decent down the hill, and approaching a two kilometre string of traffic lights.
My intuition says someone might have screwed something up here. Shouldn’t we be able to proceed faster up the hill while slowing down as we hit the peak? After all, we all know that we need to be hovering on the break as we proceed down a hill regardless. I just feel like it is foolish and should be changed. —Uphill Battle

It’s Breakheart hill, and it’s named that because it used to practically kill cart horses before it was graded.
I don’t know what the hell they’re doing. In May it went to 50, then up to 60 for a day, then back to 50 the next night.
They changed to 60 km/h so people would have a better chance of making it to Access N.S. before they closed. That 2 km is a long walk otherwise.
maybe they want you away from them as fast as you can go. that’s why there is so much racing down thru there on week nights. and just maybe, just maybe, they put that sign up, just to piss YOU off?
OB, are you one of those people who shed 30kph at the top of every hill? Yes?
Fuck off and learn to drive.
almost had me???
you never had me…
you never had your car.
Nice quote Fire. I love and hate that movie.
Ok, normally I don’t give a rat’s ass with regards to spelling (or misspelling) or grammar etc etc. I am NOT normally, what has been come to be known as a “spelling Nazi”. However, “I’ve stood all I can stands and now I can’t stands no more!”
For the love of God, people! When you are referring to slowing or stopping your vehicle it’s
“B-R-A-K-E!!!” not BREAK. I don’t know why but this one realllllly grinds my gears.
Puuhhh-leasssseeee…FFS people, get it right!
That is all.
ok, stepping back for a sec…
perhaps the limit increases because, hey you’re at the top of a hill and can see farther ahead of you. line of sight has a factor on both speed limits and passing lanes.
hit the nos on the way up and blow by those slow jerkwads.
