o.p., i agree with you in total. gay jokes, like dumb blond jokes are pasee. time to grow the fuck up world, or get the hell out of the way of people that want to. i have a lot of gay and lesbian friends, and they would love to rip some assholes throat out, for some of the cracks that are made, here or anywhere else.
There are more people than insecure gay kids killing themselves in the world. Personally I’m a little annoyed with this whole “Wear Purple” stuff that further commodifies homosexuality. And I happen to think South Park is hilarious, OP.
To suggest that kids are killing themselves because people are telling gay jokes and using the phrase “that’s gay” is to make light of the serious physical violence and bigotry LGBT kids suffer everyday at school.

Jokes can be meaningless and harmless, but the moment someone says “that hurts me, please stop”, we should all stop and say sorry. Refusing to do that and insisting on “freedom of speech” etc is just simply bad taste, imho. Just sayin’.

Actually yyy, this particualr problem persists and exists because of bigoted religious fanatics who are raising bigoted religious fanatic children who are going to school pushing LGBT kids down staircases and telling them to “go die”. Not to mention the bigger campaigns against gay rights… and Tony Perkins deserves some credit too.
OP has completely misdiagnosed the problem. Not only will a facebook group boycotting gay jokes have no effect on the number of gay jokes told (only people who already agree with the inane notion will join), it will have absolutely no effect on the number of LGBT suicides. It’s just another lame facebook stunt to make lazy people feel like they’re contributing to a cause without actually having to do anything. I can stand lame facebook stunts that actually hit their target, but this one is completely off the mark.
If you really want to make a difference set up a gay straight allicance in your school, donate to the Trevor Project, volunteer for the Youth Project here in Halifax, show your support for our local Gay Pride week, openly recognise National Coming Out Day, organize a community wide “It Gets Better” video, there are tons of things you can do that will actually contribute. AT the very LEAST, make a facebook group that’s anti bullying and violence against LGBT youth.
By pointing your finger at gay jokes in general you are contributing to the problem by distracting people from and ignoring the real issues.
Besides, gay jokes are just that: JOKES (AKA not serious). The people who are bullying kids to death are NOT JOKING. They are COMPLETELY serious.
yeah, but the thing is, no one MADE them kill themselves, by this I mean no one FORCED them to drink poison, hold a gun to their head and FORCE them to pull the trigger. These deaths were BY CHOICE. Sure they were teased and thats not right, but NO ONE and I mean NO ONE BUT YOURSELF can make you feel anything.
I wish people would STOP blaming other people for ANYTHING that goes wrong. Perhaps these kids had far worse issues than just “being gay” I dont think anyone thought of that.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone uses the word “gay” in a derogatory way. It says a lot about the person saying it (lack of intelligence).
No, it’s obviously not tantamount to murduring somebody and of course it’s not all on the stupid kids who bullied them. In most of these cases the school staff was aware of the bullying and chose to do nothing, in my opinion it’s on the adults in the situation more than the bullies. Then there’s the broader social attitude towards gay kids, which augmented if they live in the wrong state/town. Plus the pressure from their families if their relatives happen to be against homosexuality.
All these things are known to drive kids into depression and on some cases attempts at suicide. Several have been specifically mentioned in suicide notes. And when you’re that young, you have no concept of life outside of your family/town/school, you think it will go on forever. Jesus, even kids who aren’t bullied have a hard time at that age. Saying that it’s no ones fault but their own doesn’t solve anything. It’s just blaming the victim and ignoring the problems. Besides, bullying is always bad and should be stopped even if people aren’t killing themselves because of it.
Too many adults forget what it was like back then. If you were never beaten up after school, publicly humiliated by your peers, constanly ganged up on and made fun of five days a week for seven hours a day… you’ll never understand what it’s like.
Speaking as someone who was ruthlessly bullied and beaten up at school constantly from primary all the way up to highschool grad, other people CAN make you feel things. The only reason I didn’t kill myself was because I thought if I did I’d go to hell… not that hell would have been much worse.

I’ve been bullied myself. But I can’t remember what it felt like, because either I was too depressed to remember or it was so painful I suppressed the memory of it. That’s 5 years of my innocent childhood gone, just because some kid thought I deserved it.

I think the world would be nicer if certain groups stopped trying to monopolize the English language.

You came home from school after being beat up by bullies & you’d get beat for not taking one of them with you to the ground.
THat may make many of the pansies who come here gasp & think how sad a way to grow up.
But it sure stopped me from being bullied, I knew Iwas going to get my ass beat at home if I didn’t fight my own battle right now.
So remember kiddies, when some big bad bully or bullies picks on you, go for the nuts. If all you can do is get your hands one one of the bullies, go for the one withthe biggest mouth, take him out with you. Next chance you get, get him again. Then go for the next one.
Sure you’ll get a beating or three, but if there is one thing I did learn from that, its Bullies are COWARDS. You fight back & they’ll leave you alone once they see your serious, & no big bad bully wants to be beat up by someone that he & others belittle, after all where do you then stand with the other bullies, when the ‘fairy’ kicks your ass ?
So gays can’t make gay jokes? And black people can’t use the “N” word? What’s this world coming to? How about a gay-black joke? Is that okay?
