  1. The WTCC brings in money. And more money means that something else can be created to bring in more money–which means more money. Transition houses and such things hinder the flow of making more and more money.

Kind of like the numbers game (gambling) that the mafia, er government, is running. The money made is well worth the resulting increase in crime and misery. And although the people running the numbers game do have to give up a bit of the money made to buy some bandages, overall, it is still cost effective.

Transition houses and such are not cost effective in any way that makes them worth the investment.

  2. HKM -I know what you are saying but I’m willing to make a bet that transition houses for women and their children cost far, far less than what we’d pay if you added up the cost of emergency personel responding to a domestic abuse scene, plus medical care plus the issue winding it’s way through the court system. The the tens of thousands spent to transport and care for those convicted of beating their spouse, or worse still, killing them.

I’d much rather see $200,000 go towards preventing spousal abuse by giving the battered party a safe place to go instead of that same money going to clothe, house, feed and care for an inmate.

  3. You know, I thought about that, but it appears that since the majority of women do not report, it is most likely more cost effective to house, for a short time, the few men who get charged. After all, the victims of these men are usually multiple. So, housing, feeding and punishing one as opposed to housing, feeding and trying to repair a whole damaged family is much more cost effective.

  4. Why so cynical? One has nothing to do with the other. The decision to bring in a new WTCC addresses the commercial/tourism development of the city while a transition house addresses a social issue. Both are important and move ahead for different reasons. Some of the revenue generated from an increase in commercial development can be used to support more social programs. We could easily throw all of our money at social programs and very quickly have nothing left. Something needs to bring in taxpayers to subsidize social programs.

  5. Well, then I will vote for you when you run for office. Hopefully, your head won’t be turned, once in, by the revenue earned though rationalized gambling.

  6. Why would the alternative have to be transition houses? Just because that’s your little niche?

Government money goes to a lot of different things, not just WTCCs and transition houses.

  7. yorkke:
I am sure the money does go in many directions, but judging by the bitching here, it is being directed away from a lot of things that the taxpayers do feel is important. Taxes (given by the people for the people) are managed by representatives who, it is hoped, maintain a healthy balance between what is good for the people as a whole and what is needed for each person individually. It simply comes down to priorities, doesn’t it. The concern is:
Are the priorities of the people and the priorities of the politicians one and the same?

  8. also, the financial troubles of some of the transition houses was in the newspaper today, which is likely why the OB has it on the brain. Not just because it fits their niche.

  9. Personally, I think there would be less need for “transition houses” and the like if you girls would stop falling for the “big tough Alpha male” and getting pregnant/married at the drop of a hat from an Iroc…

Stop marrying the big bad wolf, cause he “turns you on” and you’ve wanted him since his days as captain of the football team in high school.

The legal age of marriage should be 25, as many females are clearly not able to make a mature choice any sooner.

Here’s a tip…remember when you first started dating and he used to pick fights with guys that “hassled” you, and you thought that was soooo sexy?
Well, that was your first clue…

  10. that makes two of us, HKM, yawn-yawn-so tired.

“legal age of marriage should be 25”
    seriously, what the fuck?

  11. Hey OP…you are a wrong. Without a vibrant business community there would be zero transition houses. Income tax and business tax and what drive the world. Think before you run your mouth off about something too complicated for you to comprehend.

  12. OB the money coming in from WTCC and other ventures (through taxes, both the venue and wages, etc) are what pays for social programs. No money in, no money out. Basic economics. And remember with Darrell in there should be more social programs (provided he figures out a way to pay for it).

  13. You know, even ole fRosTy gets tired of being called a troll wherever he goes on the t’nternet…I didn’t even know what it was until I looked it up on the Google…

Long hair and hairy back..yeah, malignant and devious? sure, no problem..

…I could even deal with living under a bridge, but do I actually have to cook and eat young women, or kin I just peek up the odd skirt?

  14. Frosty, the “wherever he goes” should be a clue: the masses have spoken–Troll. (No comment on your dietary preferences.)

Holla and Tim, your point was covered awhile back by Miles (and he did it much more elegantly than you did, Holla).

  15. Man, it’s been 35 years since I have heard that song. My Miles was a 10 year old dinosaur geek, and I thought he was sooo fine = )

  16. “but judging by the bitching here, it is being directed away from a lot of things that the taxpayers do feel is important.”

I’m not sure if the bitchers here are a fair representation of the voting population as a whole.

The government has to serve the needs of all people, not just the Women Studies majors from the mount, and their ilk.

  17. “”Frosty, the “wherever he goes” should be a clue: the masses have spoken–Troll.””

Um…touché?…(scratches his head in disappointment at HKM resorting to Mal-raT/smee style rebuttles…*sigh*)

  18. “”I’m not sure if the bitchers here are a fair representation of the voting population as a whole.””

    LMAO…very diplomatically said Yorkke,

    …in fact, I’d go one further…
I’m not sure if they even represent those kids that went to school on the “big” bus…

  19. but they do need to meet the needs of the most vulnerable people in our society – like families fleeing abuse – so if I could check off on my paycheque where my taxes would go – that would be one of my top picks…monies to large corporations wouldn’t make my list at all

  20. “”monies to large corporations wouldn’t make my list at all””

Do you boycott the $200 flat-creen at Walmart? Future Shop? Do you eat at Subway?
Buy gas from Esso/Shell/Irving? Shop at the Superstore?

You can’t avoid ‘large corporations’ and live ‘frugally’ in this city.

    full stop.

As long as you (we) strive for a ‘better deal’…cheaper diapers, affordable food, good deal on a car, cheap energy, etc etc etc…we are part of the problem, not the solution/…

The solution is for we in the western world to lower our expectations of what makes a “good” life. Do you have more than 1 child? …You’re part of the problem.

  21. Don’t watch TV. Liberated my computer from the garbage. Dislike fast food. Don’t have a car. I do shop at Superstore (and where ever else I can save money). But, mostly, I shop at the vegetable stand, the corner ethnic stores, the bread store and other such places. I used cloth diapers, I breastfed. I mostly buy used clothing. And my furniture mostly came from Kijiji. I manage to live very frugally in this city while rarely walking into a large corporate outlet. Do you really think that the large corporations that you mentioned will pack up and leave if they don’t get the biggest tax break of all. I really doubt it.

  22. Oh, and I did exceeded the one child quota, but you know Mother Nature, she always finds a way around man’s need to control everything…she simply increased the amount of eggs that drop each month.

  23. “”Do you really think that the large corporations that you mentioned will pack up and leave if they don’t get the biggest tax break of all. I really doubt it.””

Too late…they got the biggest tax breaks before they even broke sod!

You don’t really think Walmart blesses a city with its presence without a property tax exemption do you? Research Bayer’s lake FYI…

    “”but you know Mother Nature,””

yeah, we’ll give you a pass, this time!
Are you interested in purchasing one of my patented “incubator for toddlers”?
You could probably use one…I have a feeling it’s gets a bit hectic around your house…

    😉

  24. I hope you are not referring to crates made of chicken wire = p
My son is 6’3″ and his twin, my daughter, is 5’11’. They have one foot out the door, so things are getting pretty quiet around here now = )

  25. although chicken wire has its uses…no I was referring to my idea of a sound-proof box, where children are placed until age 3…exposed to Mozart, fed by tubes….oh nevermind, lol

The sound-proof box is good though?
imagine on an airplane, when the kids start squalling…the stewardess (or steward, I’m gende5r nuetral on this)…gently forces the pupae from the mother, and places it in said box….voila!, probelm solved!*

more people should come to me for simple solutions to complex prolbems!

    * of course, oxygen is fed into the box, although at a “lean” mixture to help them “sleep”

  26. Yeah…well then…I will be sure to not turn my back on Mr. Frosty, eh? Can’t have him flash freezing the children. Well, it’s been quite a day. Way too much time in front of the computer! I promise I will try harder to thoroughly thrash you I am not so tired = )

  27. Personally I am getting sick of the: Ronald Mcdonald House, Tim Hortons Children’s Foundation, Tim Hortons Timbits Hockey, Sobey’s school breakfast program, Loblaws Food Bank, the nice Mccain building at Dal, the nice Irving building at Acadia.

I could go on but I am getting sick of all the corporate greed.

  28. Okay, Okay, yorkke, point taken = ). But, I never said that the corporations did not do any good. In fact, if you look at it here, it looks like they are taking care of business in more ways than one. So, what is the point here? That big tax breaks should go to those who can most afford to pay taxes so that they can instead donate money (another tax break, just mentioning 🙂 to causes that are in much need because the tax dollars they are not paying leave these causes short of funding? That the government doesn’t provide ample funding for these charities in the hope that their need will attract corporate funding?
You know, the Ultramar Refinery in Woodside contributes to the Woodside Elementary School. Computers, breakfast program, trees and such are some of the things they have provided for. But, I think that if it was really about the children, they would not condone the kids living day after day in the shadow of a major pollutant. The kids, over the years, have had catalysts, chemicals, smoke and who knows what else dumped constantly in their face. If it was really about the children, Ultramar would have recommended years ago that perhaps it would be better if the school were moved to a different location.

  29. If you have a problem with the location of the school, then call the School Board. They are the ones responsible for placing schools The oil refinery was first built in 1918, Woodside School 1953. This is not the fault or responsibility the oil refinery.

  30. There is no longer an Ultramar Refinery in Woodside, it was dismantled in the mid to late 90’s, all that remains is a storage tank farm. Imperial Oil (Esso/Exxon-Mobile) is the operator of the refinery you see on the waterfront.

  31. You are correct, Voice…my mistake.
Tim, my point is that everyone knows that that is the last place a school should be (except maybe slam up against the Tar Pits). Yet, there it is. The school board tried to shut it down years ago, but the parents fought it (and won). Their issue was with busing–no concern about the pollutants was considered. A few years ago, they learned that the dry cleaner next to the school yard had been pumping dangerous chemicals into it as well. The simply dug up the playground and replaced the soil. I mean, the dry cleaner was target, but still no mention of the Oil Refinery.
A cancer causing catalyst was dumped on the neighbourhood about 10 years ago. The residents were told to hose down their houses, but they were not told what the substance was. When I asked for a information sheet on the substance, they would not give it to me. I called everywhere I could (the government was the least helpful) about the pollutant, but I was shut down. I gave up after awhile.

  32. So because the parents protested and won, the oil refinery should pull up stakes and move. C’mon, get real. If you want to bitch, bitch at the parents not the refinery.

So that’s why all the people in Woodside are all hunchbacked, have one eye, and no one over 25 lives there because the refinery is mutating and killing them all.

  33. Um, I could have sworn that I wrote that the Oil Refinery (who are sure to know the impact of their industry on the environment), should ADVISE the community that it would be in the best interest of the children to NOT have a school in the immediate area. I am not so naive as to expect them to move, nor to expect the country to do without oil.

Knowing what we know now, no community would place a school smack up against a refinery. But, just because it was put up before we knew the dangers doesn’t make it right. If you find out your house is filled with asbestos, there is no way you will just leave it there. Why are the children just left there?

  34. If there was asbestoes in my place, I would leave it alone. It’s when it is disturbed and the dust goes flying that it becomes dangerous.

HKM hate to burst your bubble but all over the world there are schools by oil refineries, chemical plants, nuclear reactors, etc.

What sort of advice should they give – “We are here and use chemical, etc to refine oil, and sometimes it smells and we generate smoke”. Um I think most people know that. It’s not a secret.

  35. Bro Tim is right when he says to leave the asbestos undisturbed, but I should add that only applies when the fibres aren’t loose or torn and able to become airborn. A wall that has asbestos-based drywall compound is fine so long as the wall is painted and you don’t sand it down. Same idea for a heating pipe covered in the stuff, if the wrap is still secure and not ripped then its fine.

I was frequently around asbestos fibres until 10 or years ago as one of my early jobs (in the electric sign industry) used sheets of asbestos cut off huge 50 or 100lb rolls we brought in, and my gransfather was a sheet metal worker and we were often at his shop when younger when he was using the material to make furnace gaskets and heat shields. Nobody on his side of the family has died from asbestos-related illness and I make a point of having my doc doing a through check up to make sure my exposure at work hasn’t caused any concerns… so far so good.

Its the same panic that occurs when you mention lead paint on surfaces such as window frames in older houses, the stuff is safe unless you start sanding it and let it become airborn, or ingest it by chewing on the wood work.
