Get off the fucking sidewalks, you knobs! You want motorists to accommodate you yet you break the fucking laws yourself. This morning I saw five cyclists doing this on Quinpool Road and it burns my butt to a cinder. —Sidewalks are for Walkers, Not Stupid Peddlers

  1. I refuse to get out of the way of cyclists who use the sidewalk. If I’m walking with another person beside me, I make sure we block the whole sidewalk when I see a cyclist coming. Trash on wheels.

  2. I have to cycle quinpool every day and as much as I hate bike lane zealots, I could really get behind a bike lane the length of quinpool from the roundary up to as far as quinpool, or maybe just to the street before quinpool where gaudet/planet hippy is.

  3. oops, up to as far as oxford….probably not practical/necessary all the way to oxford…the street before it will do. The back to school traffic this AM sucked.

  4. UHHHH hippies!!@!@!@!111! FFS my life has improved a whopping 87% since leaving that hipster HOLE. I kid you not, there were TEN fixies locked to our shared deck at my old place at any given time. If they had a party (which was every day), I could forget about parking in my own parking spot I paid for because their bikes were blocking EVERYTHING. They also liked to just stand in my parking spot and refuse to move when I was trying to maneuver my car in there. I guess it was some sort of protest. They also would chuck their beer bottles down there in hopes of giving me a flat tire. Pffft, and they wonder why I complained about them so much! Siiigh… it’s all over :).

  5. All this hand-waving and moaning completely overlooks the root issue: why cyclists would prefer to ride on the sidewalk instead of the road. Sidewalk cycling is much higher in the suburbs and it’s higher on streets with no bike lanes. It’s just simple logic. Put in a bike lane, provide safer, comfortable routes for cyclists and they’ll willingly stay off the sidewalk.

Bike safety advocates will tell you: “A lot of cyclists will tell you that they feel extremely unsafe on the road and therefore they choose to bike on the sidewalk. That ends up creating a second set of problems.”

This all begs a question: Why is it that we are so opposed to sidewalk cycling (especially in the suburbs where many sidewalks are mostly empty) but we are okay with sharing a multi-use path? Aren’t they the same as far as walkers and cyclists are concerned? Where we have installed bike paths alongside waterfronts and beaches, they are often shared between pedestrians and cyclists (even with a separate sidewalk).

  6. All good points, GV. There’s a lot of inefficient road usage simply because road users are compartmentalized. Clearly such segregation is useful (cars can’t ever drive in sidewalks) but there should be some allowance of cyclists on sidewalks, particularly in areas with little pedestrian traffic, like in the suburbs or where posted speed limits are relatively high. Really all you’d need to do is post a few signs on some streets saying “cyclists permitted on sidewalk” or “no cycling between 7am-10am and 4pm-6pm”.

Unfortunately common sense ideas fall on deaf ears in Halifax and on this website so I doubt anything will change anytime soon. But gas prices and obesity rates will keep climbing.

  7. And, for the record, I commute by bicycle everyday, including in the winter if the road is clear enough. I ONLY ride my bicycle on the road, use hand signals (despite getting waved at derisively by fat people stuffing their face with McDonald’s), keep as close as possible to the sidewalk, stop at all stop signs and red lights, and don’t attempt to pass on the right of cars that are lined up at a red light (a lot of cyclists do this and it’s annoying and illegal in some cities, not sure about Halifax).

That said a lot of would-be cyclists choose to drive/take a bus because they’re afraid of riding on the road and riding the way a cyclist is expected to. For this reason I think it makes sense to allow for some sidewalk use if it doesn’t get in the way of pedestrian traffic (mainly in the ‘burbs).

  8. almost every morning as im walking up to north/gottigen, i see a guy on a bicycle coming down north, he gets into the left turning lane at north, as if he were a car, turns left regardless of traffic, if its a red light, he still goes left, then he rides on the sidewalk up to northwood home.

  9. yell “put your big boy pants on” it probably won’t have much effect because they are oblivitrons, but it sure feels good

  10. drivers need to understand that bicycles fall into a ‘slow moving traffic’ category just like street sweepers, bob cats, garbage trucks, farm equipment.

When it is not possible or safe to stay on the shoulder, they have the right to take the lane.

With this in mind, I don’t see any problem with bicycles that take the left lane and drive ‘as a vehicle’ to perform a left hand turn at an intersection.

  11. I’ve rarely see asshole cyclists on the sidewalk. They are almost always respectful and do everything they can to stay out of the way of pedestrian traffic. As long as there is room, who fucking cares? If they crowd you, to quote Homer ‘push her down, son.’ It just isn’t safe to bike on some streets in this city. Anyone throwing shit in my spokes better fucking kill me. Smiley face.

  12. Have you guys ever consider the idea that drivers fear cyclists?

It’s not that drivers fear cyclists are going to attack them, but that they as drivers of big metal vehicles know that they’ve got the potential to seriously injure a vulnerable cyclist and it scares them.

Rather than allow themselves to be outwardly afraid, they channel their fear into anger directed at those that make them afraid.

  13. you can use Sidiotney crosby’s hockey stick if you like.
not as if he’ll need it for a long while.

    hahahahahahahahahaha.
    jerkfaced, douche saddle.

  14. “With this in mind, I don’t see any problem with bicycles that take the left lane and drive ‘as a vehicle’ to perform a left hand turn at an intersection.”

that’s fine, but my point was he turns left even if its a red light.

  15. he still has enough to retire on anyways.
I’m really just sick of hearing about him.
he plays… he’s in the paper.
    he doesn’t play, he’s in the paper…
    e-fucking-nough already.

and according to both papers today, he’s not finito…
as much as I would like the media-whoredness to be over with.

In fact, I’m willing to bet he’ll be in the paper again by mondays edition.
it’ll likely be something stupid like…
“UPDATE: sidiotney now able to perform 3 jumping jacks without passing out from extreme vertigo. that is all”

well that’s all good and gravy he can perform like a normal human.
can he play? no? so what nwe info that people even remotely may care about are you really reporting then? none?
    excellent article…. schlong greaser.

  16. sebastien, cyclists will drive between cars if they are merging into a left-turning lane. Also, you’re an idiot and I’m pretty everything you spew is complete fabrication. Please go away.

  17. “that’s fine, but my point was he turns left even if its a red light.”

that sounds like an idiot. I don’t agree with him at all.

  18. Is it ok if I say I am going to shoot the next person driving a car who cuts me off (or bus driver) as long as we leave up posts that encourage people to harm people on bicycles?

  19. I like how some sidewalk cyclists are all decked out like lance armstrong. That makes my day. Well.. that and clotheslining them.

Of course i’m not a total prick. If the cyclist is under the age of 12, that’s perfectly fine.

  20. So some stupid cunt just blew by me while I was on the sidewalk, and proceded to go through a red light in the process. If I ever see her coming towards me I’m gonna rip her off her bike and kick her in the cunt.

Wow, that DOES feel good. Now I understand the rage.

  21. I don’t blame cyclists for not feeling safe on the road but the sidewalk is no place for them. The law is pretty straight forward on where the cyclists are supposed to be. If you’re not comfortable being there it’s time to get off your bike.

  22. haha, ive been speaking to many cfa’s and in toronto the douche factor is higher. i’ll take dumb over daredevil

  23. I dont blame drivers for having so much rage. When i ride my bike to work, i enjoy myself. Most drivers hate their morning commute

  24. 99% of the people claiming to injure cyclists on sidewalks wouldn’t actually do it. But it’s easy to say you would when you’re anonymously spewing bullshit on the internet.

For the 1% who actually would carry out their threats, be wary of cyclists who carry steel u-locks. They can make for pretty good weapons if someone wanted to, say, defend themselves or their property from assholes sticking objects into their spokes or clotheslining them off a bicycle just for riding on a sidewalk.

  25. canned – ‘the 1%’. I love the irony of it.
The type of people, who actually would hunt down and attack a cyclist on the sidewalk, are also the crazy fuckers who would welcome a real fight.

If you don’t feel safe riding on the road, please do “feel safe”, walking your bike on the sidewalk.

  26. I feel safe riding on the road, but I think we should encourage people to use alternative (to driving) forms of transportation, including cycling. If that means allowing cyclists to ride on unpopulated sidewalks, so be it – it doesn’t affect pedestrians, makes it easier for motorists, and encourages potential newbies to take up cycling. Like I said before, it’s not like it would cost much to put up a few signs indicating whether and at what times sidewalk cycling is allowed.

And you’re right, that 1% is prone to violence, and hopefully already in jail. So it’s basically 100% bullshitters – but I’ll keep my u-lock with me just in case.

  27. I think your signage idea would cost more than you think Canned. First, we would need to hire a consultant from Toronto and pay for their airfare, meals, rides around town, etc. Then we’d have to have several in-camera meetings where council might talk about the signs for five minutes then just go on to something else because someone made some snide comment about someone being a blabbering woman, yadda yadda, nothing gets done. Then look, it’s winter! You can’t possibly put up signs in the snow banks and there are less cyclists, so this can wait until spring. Then spring comes and council will open up their meetings for the public to join. Ole Clement Jones comes along and talks about how the signs will block out the sun on his lovely vegetable garden for the peak sunlight hours of 12-2. Council will consider this for a few months. Then Hippy Liberal Douche will come along and say how the material used to make the signs directly kills baby pandas and will increase global warming by 7.3%. Ugg… I’m not even going to finish this.
