apparently a drug store has black hair products locked up. excuse me, what are black hair products? funny I have never heard of black hair products. hair products are generally intened for people with specific hair, not skin colors. This seems to be a case of crying wolf. perhaps they are locked up because they are often stolen, If I owned a store I would lock p things that are constantly stolen. just like mens razors at walmart. Is walmart sexist For locking up mens razors and not female razors?

The truth of the matter is that racism is an unfortunate occurance in our society. one I would hope that is on its way out. however, citing racism at the drop of a hat is exactly the type of behaviour that breeds animosity.

africville was a tragic example of the city appropriating land that was populated by poor people. poor black people. The same thing happened to the small farm town that once stood where burnside industrial park now stands. those were also people unable to stop the city from taking their land. they were offered little compensation. and those peole were poor and white. people make a racial issue out of what should have been a poverty issue. I am not saying there was not a racist attitude prevailing during the times. I am however saying that black white, red, green, brown. its easy to talk about color if your looking for it.

Skin color is the last thing I look for.

  1. How is anyone supposed to take this bitch seriously when you started it with the word “apparently”? You’re bitching about a rumour? Something you have absolutely no first-hand knowledge of whatsoever? Brutal.

  2. “The truth of the matter is that racism is an unfortunate occurance in our society.”
Wow, how interesting and informative! Do tell?
I’d prefer a cross-burning, proud redneck any day than these sanctimonious, anti-racist-badge-wearing liberals who live in their own little dream world.

  3. Question (because I actually am seeking an answer here): did the residents of Africville own deeds to their land? I’ve heard they were mostly squatters and am wondering if it’s true or not?

  4. To be living in Halifax, maybe even being from NS, and not knowing the history of Africville is pretty sad. I’ve been here from NB not even for 5 years I know it. Squatters? No. The residents had been continually treated at 3rd class citizens for over 100 years, and continue to be treated so. No wonder NS needs a black history month, a province which is by far the most racist and ignorant province I’ve ever lived in. We’re all Canadian, learn your history, learn what it means to be a part of a country.

  5. Well, it’s a common perception for A LOT of people in this province that they were squatters and didn’t have deeds to their land, so I was simply asking if there’s any merit to this to clear things up for some people who have this perception. I don’t know the answer so I was asking it. Expecting everyone in NS to have detailed knowledge of the ins and outs of any one event (because a lot of shit has gone down in NS besides Africville) is ridiculous and not having an intimate knowledge of this event does not mean one is racist or “sad” (how many people in NS have an intimate knowledge of what Cornwallis did to the Aboriginals in this province? not very many or we wouldn’t have shitloads of things named after the SOB. BUt would you call THOSE people racist? Probably not.) If they didn’t have deeds to their land, then technically they were squatters plan and simple. Squatters eventually DO have rights to land after a certain period of time, but they will never be considered “owners” until they possess deeds. If they were squatters it’d make it much easier for the city to boot them off the land, legally. Maybe they did have deeds, maybe they didn’t, all I intended to do is bring up a point that is a highly contended part of this event.

There are a lot of misconceptions out there about africville, stunned in disbelief, and it’s quite hard to find out (especially this day and age) an unbiased account of what really happened. I don’t think the city handled it very well (it would’ve been handled much differently if it was say a poor white community, although there still would’ve been some mistreatment because the people were poor regardless of race), but I don’t think it was all sunshine and roses on the part of the africville residents either.

Anyone who’s ever studied history knows that every historical event has a billion sides to it and the study of history is based on educated opinions made up of interpretations of facts and evidence. Any given two historians would likely have different accounts of what happened and why based on the same facts and evidence.

  6. Good god. They were squatters, poor squatters living next to where the city disposed of its garbage. The government PAID for these people to be put up in houses in hrm, because they took ‘thier’ land. Racism is made up, just like the rest of society, it’s all a head game, if you think its racsist, then it is. If you can get over it, then its not. So fuck off and concerntrate on something else other then “I’m black, people don’t like me. It sucks.” Grow some balls and a ‘fuck you’ attitude please and stop whining!

P.s. wtf black history month. Where is chinese history month? What about native american month? They were used and abused for years!

Seriously, stop making yourself look like a poor unfortunate black kid. and go buy your hair products somewhere else!

  7. “…by far the most racist and ignorant province I’ve ever lived in.”

Move to Quebec and get back to me. You ain’t seen nuthin’ yet.
