Everyday I walk outside my apartment, no matter where I go in the city, I always come across parents dragging their kids along somewhere or pushing strollers… With a huge fucking cigarette in their mouth! What the fuck are you thinking? I can’t count the number of times I’ve told these jack asses to butt it out around their kids, but it’s like every time I do, 3 more appear. Can you all please just stop it? If you want your kids to smoke, just buy them their own pack already. If not, stop making them inhale your second hand shit. —Quits McGee

Here’s a thought: mind your own goddamn business.
suck it up op. at least they are outside and not filling their house with second hand smoke.
Mind your own business OP. So sick of non smokers.
Have your own kids and rasie them anyway you want, my your own business.
First: Who appointed you surgeon general of Halifax? Perhaps if things like this offend you then maybe you should lock yourself in your house with your oxygen generater and fuck off. Nobody wants to hear from some self intitled jackass when they are out with their family.
Second: I’m not a doctor but I’m sure that a child is absorbing more harmful shit from exhaust fumes etc just floating around in the air than from a single cigarette blowing in the wind.
If you need to voice your opinion, protest the government for selling death on the shelves of every single gas station and corner store in the province. This shit was made legal and kept legal for one reason only: The government loves money.

Hey OP, I agree with your opinion and sense of disgust when you see parent’s smoking with their kids. Sure, car exhausts, etc, etc… whatever. Why CHOOSE to add another toxin to your child’s daily intake?
BUT: your whole crusade telling people to butt out is a little invasive. It IS legal after all… like SHITD said, the gov’t loves $$
Anybody read health reports from, oh, I don’t know, the past two generations? You can choose to walk away, and you probably (you must!) work in nonsmoking workplaces. Kids with smoker parents don’t have a choice. I am stunned every time I see a parent holding onto a child with one hand and a cigarette in the other. Also, it’ll be my taxes that are paying for you in the hospital.
Well hey, if you guys can be so adament about personal responsibility, your ability to choose, and your freedom to smoke, can I be equally adament that I find the ‘mind your own business’ argument kinda pathetic?
I appreciate why in the present, you could argue why your smoke shouldn’t involve anyone else, and if you want to light up, it’s your own damn business…great. However, shit gets kinda muddled up when you, after 20 years of performing said action, demand that your poor health CHOICE should not be a factor when allotting the amount of time, effort, and laughably large sums of money that are required from everyone in the healthcare/taxpayer community in order to, effectively, support your habit. It’s unethical to treat you any differently, so society growns and bears the cost.
It sucks enough that people get sick from shit they have absolutely no control over, but when the system is clogged up from people with cancers/COPD/heart disease/mac. degeneration/high stroke risk/etc…etc…etc, that are even correlated with the shit you’ve done to yourself for so many years…I dunno man, I kind of think the ‘personal responsibility’ thing goes out the window, because your ultimately demanding that everyone else pays for your undeniably poor health decision. Why is that fair, exactly?
I appreciate my harshness of calling smoking a choice full-out, I get that it’s an amazingly difficult habit to break…but I ultimately can’t give a shit. At least don’t be proud of your smoking, or try and at least do fucking something about it, as opposed to whining about freedoms and then demanding we take care of you.
Uncle Ben, fuck off.
Wow. Good point, NSGurl…Looks like she gotcha there, Uncle Ben. :S
Uncle Ben, as you said its a choice. There is personal responsibility involved becuase, regardless of the bill for health care, I am the one that will eventually die (or have health issues) from my decision, not you. Maybe second hand smoke could have affected you years ago, but with all the new laws outlawing smoking, your pretty safe these days.
If you wan’t to talk about shared group responsibility to limit negative effects on our health care system due to expenses, I say its a slippery slope. There are all kinds of “choices” ppl make everyday that could impact their cost on health care, so should we say, monitor and then restrict what foods ppl eat to ensure that morbidly obese persons (and those on their way) do not strain the money of health care?
How about we also limit any recreational sport I don’t participate in or like (because they dont matter to me) so skateboarding, sking, horseback riding, etc can all lead to serious injuries (Christopher Reeves) and since I don’t participate in or enjoy any of them I think we should ban them as to avoid potential cost to the health care system from stupid(my opinion) activities people CHOOSE to do because I don’t agree with said activities. Sounds like a wondeful concept and country to live in…
And Btw, if you can’t detect my sarcasm, us “smokers” pay taxes out the ass on our “smokes” so I think we cover our fair share of our health care bills. The aforementioned activities above, not so much!
I agree with your concern and your right to bitch here but what kind of audacious windbag walks up to perfect strangers to hand out public smoking citations? Stop being such an A-type control freak.
I know I didn’t ask to be stuck in this socialist quagmire of a country – sorry you have to pay for my health care. While I can’t see your body type OP I have a funny feeling (for irony sake) that your ass alone weighs 400 pounds. Who is paying for who?
How is it appropriate for a Government or an individual to think ostracizing 20% of the population is going to solve the problem of smoking? LOL.
Like it or not, no matter how successful government propaganda programs are, there will always be smokers. Even if you are successful in going beyond ostracizing families and citizens – and turning them into criminals through punitive short-sighted legislation – the same problem will still exist.
And though it may be popular to harp on the fat or the smokers – we should be thanking the fat smokers… They don’t live long enough to cost you anything, they are actually saving you money. So, again, STFU

how tall are these children?!?!?
smoke rises so they would have to be as tall or taller than the parent….
at which point they’re nearly ready to decide if they want to smoke anyways,….
unless of course you see smoking parents with the kids hiked up over their shoulders somehow…
something tells me this isn’t the real issue here.
say what you mean and mean what you say, jackass.
Oh please!!! Uncle Ben you have no idea what you are talking about. Your health care argument has been proven false. It is a fact that smokers die early, therefore lessening the bane on the healthcare system. Sure there are some costs due to health but you cannot say that because you do not smoke you will have little to no health costs. It pisses me off when people regurgitate some generalized statement they heard someone quote at the watercooler.
To this I would add that both of my grandparents died in hospitL under constant 24 hour care. One of bowel cancer and the other of dimensia, neither of which smoked or drank amday in their lives. I suppose this was all free was it. Other members of my family have diabetes, asthma, heart disease and cancer, and guess what none of them smoke either.
The last thing I want to say is that smoking is healthy, it is not and if you smoke you will undoubtedly die of some smoking related disease.
And those same cancer-jackasses will wonder why their kids develop lung disease/breathing troubles later on. Imagine what their house air quality is. Yuck.
