In the coming years HRM is going to be shutting down bike and pedestrian access to the bridge while it gets reno’d. If this city had any balls at all (and we all know that it doesn’t) they could hit it out of the park if they gave free access (oh ok, lets keep it real, this is Nova Scotia afterall)… discounted access to the ferry for anybody riding a bike. I already know all the reasons why this isn’t a good idea, so save it, folks. —Cranky

Not a bad idea Cranky, except you forgot discounted access for people on foot, as well. Walkers are just as enviro-friendly as cyclists.

HRM plans to have a few mini-vans shuttling walkers back and forth across the bridge. Apparently they expect to do this for cyclists as well. Good luck to that plan, I say. The shuttles do make some kind of sense for the walkers, though.

I’d say there should be no cost ferries, just as riding or walking across would have been…
but we know hrm and transit already doesn’t pay for itself so they definitely couldn’t afford the hit for making it free.
I also am betting on a big uproar once this ‘shuttle’ system gets implemented.

With 150mil (I read recently 200mil) for this, you’d think they could give a few peanuts to the masses and let them take the stupid ferry for free.

IF they did make the Ferry free and then so many people wanted to take it that you regularly had to wait extra half hours+ for ferries because they were full… how much more of an uproar do ya think they’d get? No real, viable solution to that scenario immediately comes to mind.

Here’s the thing….
I ride a personal vehicle that is so far not allowed on the bridge. Because nobody knows what it is. It’s not allowed in traffic. When i ride it, i’m considered too pedestrian for the bike lane and too “cycle” for the pedestrian lane. Which means i’m paying for the ferry EVERY DAY. Or parking.. whatever..
That being said, I agree with this bitch. It is no less valid just because HRM and the bridge commission are stupid.
