I understand that beer is your niche, but com’on $8.00 for a single rye and water in a short glass is outrageous. The $9.15 for the crap Malbec served in glass that isn’t fit to serve wine – that’s another thing. —Please Lower Your Markup

  1. I’m curious, were you at a “Japanese” restaurant? ’cause this sounds suspiciously like my old workplace.

  2. OMG!!! Expensive alcohol on the peninsula =0 who’d-a-thunk

OB, start you evening at the Fleet Club. $3.25 for a beer I do believe 😉 Shots under $5.

  3. Definitely need to have one of our Summits at the Fleet – that way, you guys can roll me down the hill and, with enough bounce from the Double Dees, I’ll land in the passenger seat on my car where Hub-Unit will be waiting with a pointy stick.

  4. Sounds like Maxwell’s (beer is their niche) but I paid 9 even for a Malbec at the Shoeshop last week so who knows.

  5. Oh how sweet, you’re having a summit just for my birthday!? Aww, you shouldn’t have :D!

  6. Does that mean you’re coming, Mel???

Also, I think I know who you are IN REAL LIFE *creepystalkerstare*

    OH NOES.

I’m harmless, though. Promise! That restraining order was just a ‘misunderstanding’! Honest!

  7. I definitely think mel should come to the next summit. 😉 I may even get you a present! 😛

  8. 🙂 Now I have 2 parties to go to on the 14th.

The summit & a B-day, not yours Mel, unless your blonde & turning 18.

  9. Nope, brunette turning 21, sorry. Well, I’ll be going out on the night of the 13th so I might not be in great condition the next day ;D. I may come! Then you’ll all know my true identity ooooh no!

  10. OP, they put the prices high to weed out the ones that can’t afford it. People with money don’t want to socialize with the poor.

  11. You can come too, Sebastard!

But only if you put sparklers up your sexhole and run around.

  12. They’re a great gang, Mel, you’ll be fine :D. And brunch after a night out is just what the doctor ordered. I wish I was in town that weekend… alas, the closing date on our new house is Friday the 12. So I imagine that we’ll be painting and moving shit. Have fun though.

  13. I’m so proud of you and your new house, ralmn!!! The pic you have on your FB is darling! I’m a jealous bitch, I gotta say. 🙂

  14. Tanks Kitteh. 😀 I’m alternating from terrified (I promised I’d never invest in this damn town again), to excited. Helps that this is the boy’s first place, so he’s not as jaded as I am. The renos terrify me! Please lord let this relationship survive the insanity of have no kitchen for 2 months.

  15. Well, at least the OUTSIDE looks good!

    HAHA.

It won’t be so bad! Just get a mini fridge, toaster oven and a hot plate. And you can use disposable dishes like I did when I lived in jail (rez @ laval, lolz). It’ll be like university all over again! <3

  16. To a restaurant owner, the only good drunkard is one that has paid a whole bunch of money.

  17. I have lost a dozen posts from “OOPs, you seem to be logged in! If you find this message in error, you can logout and then back in again by clicking here”

Ofcouse everything i try doesnt work. Im typing this from my phone in order to post it ( my computer is getting the message)

  18. I had that same problem a few days ago GV. I though maybe I was logged in on my work computer and hadn’t logged out but that wasn’t the case. Go figure.Porbably, just a glitch in this website.

  19. Login problem – don’t log in via facecrack, delete your browser history, cookies, & form data. Should be ok after that.

If not, send an e-mail to the mod and she’ll fix it 😉

  20. 9.15? That’s strip club prices. Damn, I’m with you OP. If it’s the bar I think it is, the one with all the beers on tap, I wouldn’t go there anyways. I’ve heard from more than one source including a former employee that they have rats. I’ve also been denied service there for no apparent reason. I mean like had just walked in, was well dressed, groomed, pretty well sober. All I got from the bartender was a dirty look. Stood there for a few minutes and left, and haven’t come back.

  21. I had that problem too the other day! Pissed me off to no end. I was feeling witty. Ah well. Hope everyone is enjoying the sunny weather. Taking a wine break. Mmm…

  22. this place doesn’t have a monopoly on alcohol…
boycott them if you think their prices are too high.

I mean, that’s like going to ‘cut’ and complaining the steak costs more than at montana’s.

  23. When i order a jack daniels on ice, it should not be twice the price compared to other bars. The governmenr needs to regulate this. The gouging is horrendous.

  24. So what the fuck is so difficult to ask what the price is before ordering? If you don’t like it, go somewhere else. It’s not fucking rocket science.

BTW it is the governments’ horrendous taxation on everything that is a part of the high prices.

  25. nicely said zzz
Kudo’s to you as well Bro Tim.

Is it any wonder the home made wine & beer kits are selling like hotcakes.

  26. you’re telling me. 🙂

    mmmmmmmmm

out from the yeast came a bubbling brew….
    beer that is….

  27. It’s hard to get a variety of beer at most places unless it’s a specialty place. My cousin works in the beer industry and often has to have things special ordered by the case from the LCBO because it’s almost impossible to find anywhere.

That being said, I ordered a drink at a place in Toronto that has a locale here in Halifax and it was outrageously expensive. I ordered one shot, but asked if i could have a tall glass with some cranberry and orange in it. Most expensive cranberry orange juice I’ve ever had. Charged me the price of a double shot for one shot and a bunch of juice! *sigh*

Also: there *are* places downtown that will charge you $15 for a single martini.

    Just sayin’ 😉

  28. Seeee Tommy, another story about you getting screwed for no reason :P. Maybe you’re on some sort of Candid Camera/Truman Show thing.

I have tried some wickedly delicious overpriced martinis downtown! Luckily I wasn’t paying though ;D. I had this one strawberry one that had real strawberry puree and like mint leaves and stuff in it. I could have downed a ton of those but too much sugar + alcohol is never good! I went to London (England) to visit a friend from here who was living there and drinks there were just STUPID. Like, I didn’t really care about them costing a lot because that is to be expected but I don’t know what it was but getting actually drunk was quite the task. I don’t know if they just make drinks weaker there or what. My friend and I went out a lot and mostly just bought pitchers of something and still could barely get a buzz on. I also bought a thing of Smirnoff, like just regular 40% Smirnoff and I put it in the freezer and IT FROZE SOLID. How can that even be? My friend also bought a different kind of alcohol and his also froze solid. And it did say 40% so I don’t know. It was just weird.

  29. was it straight liquor? or mixed? mixed even with 40% in it will freeze.

    Just predrink lol

  30. Yes it was straight vodka. We did predrink some nights but I don’t usually like to get absolutely smashed before even going out, especially because the line ups to get into any place there were crazy and I didn’t feel like getting turned away after waiting forever in a line :P. But you can drink in public there, so we just wandered around drinking one night and stopped into corner stores every so often to restock ;D.

  31. At the time, Mel, I thought it was my age. I have noticed a somewhat anti young people attitude at that establishment, but others tell me that there’s usually mostly young people in there. I haven’t been in a couple years so maybe something’s changed. Whenever I was there it was definitely the pushing/over 30 crowd. Whatever, plenty of bars to go to.

  32. Maxwell’s Slum is one THE worst establishments anywhere. The ONLY thing going for them is their variety of beer BUT nothing can excuse their piss poor service and horrible pub food. Just because there are numerous other drinking establishments downtown should not excuse their apparent shortcomings, but if this city wasn’t a university town, MP would have closed long ago.
